By means of "emulsion-electrospinning", both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs, paclitaxel (PTX) and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX), were successfully loaded into PEG-PLA nanofiber mats to realize multi-drug delivery. The release behaviors of both the drugs from the same fiber mats were ascribed to their solubility properties and distribution status in the fibers. Due to its high hydrophilicity, DOX was easy to diffuse out from the fibers, and its release rate was always faster than that of hydrophobic PTX. Moreover, the release rate of PTX was accelerated by DOX's release from the same drug-loaded fibers. In vitro cytotoxicity against rat Glioma C6 cells indicated that the dual drug combination showed a higher inhibition and apoptosis against C6 cells than a single drug-loaded system, which suggests the promise for multi-drug delivery on combination therapy.

Luminescent, mesoporous, and bioactive europium-doped hydroxyapatite (HAp:Eu3+) nanofibers and microbelts have been prepared by a combination of sol-gel and electrospinning processes with a cationic surfactant as template. The obtained multifunctional hydroxyapatite nanofibers and microbelts, which have mesoporous structure and red luminescence, were tested as drug carriers by investigating their drug-storage/release properties with ibuprofen (IBU) as model drug. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution (HR) TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, N-2 adsorption/desorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and UV/Vis spectroscopy were used to characterize the structural, morphological, textural, and optical properties of the resulting samples.

In this article the UDF script file in the Fluent software was rewritten as the "connecting file" for the Fluent and the ANSYS/ABAQUS in order that the joined file can be used to do aero-elastic computations. In this way the fluid field is computed by solving the Navier-Stokes equations and the structure movement is integrated by the dynamics directly. An analysis of the computed results shows that this coupled method designed for simulating aero-elastic systems is workable and can be used for the other fluid-structure interaction problems.

Phase locking of two fiber lasers is demonstrated experimentally by the use of a self-imaging resonator with a spatial filter. The high-contrast interference strips of the coherent beam profile are observed. The coherent output power of the fiber array exceeds 12W and the efficiency of coherent power combination is 88% with pump power of 60W. The whole system operates quite stably and, for the spatial filter, no thermal effects have been observed, which means that we can increase the coherent output power further by this method. An analytical expression of a radial laser array for flat-topped beam is derived based on the generalized Collins formula. The intensity distribution of the resulting beam focused by a lens at the focus plane, for phase-locked and nonphase-locked cases, is studied numerically. The effect of the Fresnel number and normalized radius on intensity distribution for phase-locked and nonphase-locked cases is also presented. It is found that intensity distribution for nonphase-locked case is much less sensible to the Fresnel number and normalized radius than that of phase-locked case. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
