The rapid evolution of nanotechnology appeals for the understanding of global response of nanoscale systems based on atomic interactions, hence necessitates novel, sophisticated, and physically based approaches to bridge the gaps between various length and time scales. In this paper, we propose a group of statistical thermodynamics methods for the simulations of nanoscale systems under quasi-static loading at finite temperature, that is, molecular statistical thermodynamics (MST) method, cluster statistical thermodynamics (CST) method, and the hybrid molecular/cluster statistical thermodynamics (HMCST) method. These methods, by treating atoms as oscillators and particles simultaneously, as well as clusters, comprise different spatial and temporal scales in a unified framework. One appealing feature of these methods is their "seamlessness" or consistency in the same underlying atomistic model in all regions consisting of atoms and clusters, and hence can avoid the ghost force in the simulation. On the other hand, compared with conventional MD simulations, their high computational efficiency appears very attractive, as manifested by the simulations of uniaxial compression and nanoindenation. Experimental stress-strain data of OFHC copper first under torsion to 13% and then under torsion-tension to about 10% are used to study the characteristics of three elastic-plastic constitutive models: Chaboche's super-positional nonlinear model, Dafalias and Popov's two surface model and Watanabe and Atluri's version of the endochronic model. The three models, originally oriented for infinitesimal deformation, have been extended for finite deformation. The results show (a) the Mises-type yield surface used in the three models brings about significant departure of the predictions from the experimental data; (b) Chaboche's and Dafalias' models are easier than Watanabe and Atluri's model in determining the material parameters in them, and (c) Chaboche's and Watanabe & Atluri's models produce almost the same prediction to the data, while Dafalias' model cannot accurately predict the plastic deformations when a loading path changes in its direction. Plastic stress-strain fields of two types of steel specimens loaded to large deformations are studied. Computational results demonstrate that, owing to the fact that the hardening exponent of the material varies as strain enlarges and the blunting of the crack tip, the well known HRR stress field in the plane strain model can only hold for the stage of a small plastic strain. Plastic dilatancy is shown to have substantial effects on strain distributions and blunting. To justify the constitutive equations used for analysis and to check the precision of computations, the load-deflection of a three-point bend beam and the load-elongation of an axisymmetric bar notched by a V-shaped cut were tested and recorded. The computed curves are in good accordance with experimental data.

An alignment study of a liquid crystalline copolyether TPP-7/11(5/5) thin films has been carried out in a 10 kV . cm(-1) electrostatic field parallel to the thin film surface normal. This copolyether possesses a negative dielectric anisotropy. The chain molecules are homogeneously aligned in the electric field and they form two-dimensionally ordered lamellae in a tilted columnar phase when the samples were cooled to room temperature. It is observed that the chain molecules are splayed to form bent lamellae and the chain direction is perpendicular to the tangential direction of the lamellar surfaces. These lamellae thus become replicas of the chain orientation, Due to the flexoelectric effect and density fluctuation on the thin film free surface, disclinations having topological strength s = 1, c = pi /4 and defect walls form. These s = 1 disclinations possesses both left- and right-handednesses. Discussion of the defect formations have been attempted.

The mechanical deformations of nickel nanowire subjected to uniaxial tensile strain at 300 K are simulated by using molecular dynamics with the quantum corrected Sutten-Chen many-body force field. We have used common neighbor analysis method to investigate the structural evolution of Ni nanowire during the elongation process. For the strain rate of 0.1%/ps, the elastic limit is up to about 11% strain with the yield stress of 8.6 GPa. At the elastic stage, the deformation is carried mainly through the uniform elongation of the distances between the layers (perpendicular to the Z-axis) while the atomic structure remains basically unchanged. With further strain, the slips in the {111} planes start to take place in order to accommodate the applied strain to carry the deformation partially, and subsequently the neck forms. The atomic rearrangements in the neck region result in a zigzag change in the stress-strain curve; the atomic structures beyond the region, however, have no significant changes. With the strain close to the point of the breaking, we observe the formation of a one-atom thick necklace in Ni nanowire. The strain rates have no significant effect on the deformation mechanism, but have some influence on the yield stress, the elastic limit, and the fracture strain of the nanowire.

In this paper, a real-time and in situ optical measuring system is reported to observe high-velocity deformations of samples subjected to impact loading. The system consists of a high-speed camera, a He-Ne laser, a frame grabber, a synchronization device and analysis software based on digital correlation theory. The optical system has been adapted to investigate the dynamic deformation field and its evolution in notched samples loaded by an split Hopkinson tension bar, with a resolution of 50 pin and an accuracy of 0.5 mum. Results obtained in experiments are discussed and compared with numerical simulations. It is shown that the measuring system is effective and valid.

The response of porous Al2O3 to nanoindentation was investigated at microscopic scales (nm-mu m) and under ultra-low loads from 5 to 90 mN with special attention paid to the dependence of the load-depth behaviour to sample porosity. It was found that the load-depth curves manifest local responses typical of the various porous structures investigated. This is particularly clear for the residual deformation after load removal. Similarly, the limited mean pressure of the sample containing small grains and interconnected pores is consistent with its porous structure. By comparison, the samples with larger grain size and various porous structures exhibit higher pressures and smaller residual deformations that can be attributed to the mechanical response of the solid phase. The transitions between the different contact models which include the Hertz, Bradley, Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR), Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) and Maugis-Dugdale (MD) models are revealed by analyzing their contact pressure profiles and surface interactions. Inside the contact area, surface interaction/adhesion induces tensile contact pressure around the contact edge. Outside the contact area, whether or not to consider the surface interaction has a significant influence on the contact system equilibrium. The difference in contact pressure due to the surface interaction inside the contact area and the equilibrium influenced by the surface interaction outside the contact area are physically responsible for the different results of the different models. A systematic study on the transitions between different models is shown by analyzing the contact pressure profiles and the surface interactions both inside and outside the contact area. The definitions of contact radius and the flatness of contact surfaces are also discussed. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2008.

Silicon nitride with helical structure was prepared on a large scale by CVD. On the microscale, these coiled Si3N4 ceramics still possess superelasticity and can recover their original shapes after cyclic loadings without noticeable deformations. These results suggest helical microcoils could have potential in microdevices for MEMS, motors, electromagnets, generators, and related equipment.

We investigate the surface deformations of buoyant-thermocapillary convection in a rectangular cavity clue to gravity and temperature gradient between the two sidewalls. The cavity is 52mm x 42mm in horizontal cross section, the thickness of liquid layer h is changed from 2.5mm to 6.5mm. Surface deformations of h = 3.5mm and 6.0mm are discussed and compared. Temperature difference is increased gradually, and the flow in the liquid layer will change from stable convection to unstable convection. Two kinds of optical diagnostic system with image processor are developed for study of the kinetics of buoyant-thermocapillary convection, they give out the information of liquid free surface. The quantitative results are calculated by Fourier transform and correlation analysis, respectively. With the increasing temperature gradient, surface deformations calculated are more declining. It is interesting phenomenon that the inclining directions of the convections in thin and thick liquid layers are different. For a thin layer, the convection is mainly controlled by thermocapillary effect. However, for a thick layer, the convection is mainly controlled by buoyancy effect. The surface deformation theoretically analysed is consistent with our experimental results. The present experiment proves that surface deformation is related to temperature gradient and thickness of the liquid layer. In other words, surface deformation lies on capillary convection and buoyancy convection.

The critical excavation depth of a jointed rock slope is an important problem in rock engineering. This paper studies the critical excavation depth for two idealized jointed rock slopes by employing a face-to-face discrete element method (DEM). The DEM is based on the discontinuity analysis which can consider anisotropic and discontinuous deformations due to joints and their orientations. It uses four lump-points at each surface of rock blocks to describe their interactions. The relationship between the critical excavation depth D-s and the natural slope angle alpha, the joint inclination angle theta as well as the strength parameters of the joints c(r) ,phi(r) is analyzed, and the critical excavation depth obtained with this DEM and the limit equilibrium method (LEM) is compared. Furthermore, effects of joints on the failure modes are compared between DEM simulations and experimental observations. It is found that the DEM predicts a lower critical excavation depth than the LEM if the joint structures in the rock mass are not ignored.

Floating zone crystal growth in microgravity environment is investigated numerically by a finite element method for semiconductor growth processing, which involves thermocapillary convection, phase change convection, thermal diffusion and solutal diffusion. The configurations of phase change interfaces and distributions of velocity, temperature and concentration fields are analyzed for typical conditions of pulling rates and segregation coefficients. The influence of phase change convection on the distribution of concentration is studied in detail. The results show that the thermocapillary convection plays an important role in mixing up the melt with dopant. The deformations of phase change interfaces by thermal convection-diffusion and pulling rods make larger variation of concentration field in comparison with the case of plane interfaces.

Free surface deformations of thermocapillary convection in a small liquid bridge of half floating-zone are studied in the present paper. The relative displacement and phase difference of free surface oscillation are experimentally studied, and the features of free surface oscillation for various applied temperature differences are obtained. It is discovered that there is a sort of surface waves having the character of small perturbation, and having a wave mode of unusually large amplitude in one corner region of the liquid bridge.

A variational principle is applied to the problem of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibrium of a self-contained elliptical plasma ball, such as elliptical ball lightning. The principle is appropriate for an approximate solution of partial differential equations with arbitrary boundary shape. The method reduces the partial differential equation to a series of ordinary differential equations and is especially valuable for treating boundaries with nonlinear deformations. The calculations conclude that the pressure distribution and the poloidal current are more uniform in an oblate self-confined plasma ball than that of an elongated plasma ball. The ellipticity of the plasma ball is obviously restricted by its internal pressure, magnetic field, and ambient pressure. Qualitative evidence is presented for the absence of sighting of elongated ball lightning.

The local-global anatysis method is systematically extended to the fracture analysis of spherical shells. On the basis of the shallow shell theory, which takes into account transverse shear deformations, governing equations for cracked spherical shells expressed in displacement and stress functions f, F and φ are proposed, and then a general solution including Modes, Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ for stress-strain fields at crack tip in a spherical shell is obtained, which plays the same role as Williams's expansion in plane elasticity. The numerical results for finite-size spherical shells under different boundary conditions have been obtained. Furthermore, the bulging factors are analyzed with regard to shearing stiffness and an approximate formula is given.
