Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was used to study a series of synthetic cationic porphyrins as the perchlorate and bromide salts. This work presents the analytical results for the porphyrins obtained using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) and 1,8,9-anthratriol as matrices. The selective use of matrix affects ion formation from these porphyrins. By using DHB as the matrix, we not only observed [M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 1-4) ions, but also obtained [2M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 2-7) ions from the synthetic cationic porphyrins. The space volume of the side chains (R groups) and the nature of the anions (Br- or CIO4-) affected the relative importance of monomeric and dimeric ions of the porphyrin. The possible mechanisms of desorption and ionization of these cationic porphyrins were also considered in this study. MALDI-TOFMS proved to be a very useful method for obtaining structural information on these synthetic cationic porphyrins. Copyright (C) 1999 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.

In this study, we used a rheological method to study the shape of DNA-cationic lipid complexes and model polyelectrolyte-lipid complexes. We introduced two kinds of anionic polyelectrolytes, sodium polygalacturonate (PGU) and sodium dextran sulfate (DSS), of varying size, as models for DNA. The prepared complexes were incubated under laminar flow conditions. The results show the same quantitative relation between the shape parameter of lipoplexes and the length of anionic polyelectrolytes, including DNA. The rheological behavior of PGU and DSS were similar to that of DNA. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A polymer-based monolithic capillary column imprinted with 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) was prepared by a thermally-initiated polymerization process; and its performance as a capillary electrochromatographic medium was evaluated in separating 4-AP and 2-AP isomers. The effects of experimental parameters, such as pH value and ionic strength of the buffer, the acetonitrile content in the mobile phase, and the applied voltage, on the resolution of these isomers had been carefully investigated. It was found that in the retention process there were interplays of multiple mechanisms of ion-exchange, molecular imprinting, and electrophoresis. These mechanisms allowed more sophisticated control of experimental parameters in the separation of ionizable compounds.

Equations to describe the two sites binding between proteins and ligands were deduced. According to these equations, not only the binding constants, but also the mole fraction of proteins in different forms could be obtained. Using the published data on the interaction between human serum albumin (HSA) and three kinds of porphyrin (coproporphyrin (CP), uroporphyrin I (UP) and protoporphyrin (PP)), a further study on their binding was carried out. It was concluded that there may exist two binding sites with the binding constants at the first site. proved to be the preferential one, being 6.50 x 10(5) 1.94 x 10(6) and 8.94 x 10(5). respectively. In addition. it was also demonstrated that the two binding sites of HSA with CP and UP might be of different kinds, though those of HSA and PP were of the same kind but at different positions. Schiff base compounds refer to the branch of supra-molecules and can be used as sensing material in the construction of potentiometric ion selective electrodes (ISEs). This relatively modern field has been subject to extensive research in the period of 1999-2007 when more than 100 ISEs employing Schiff bases were constructed. The quantitative high-throughput detection of 29 cations and 7 anions has been demonstrated in various scientific branches, such as biomedicine, pharmacy, biochemistry, pharmacology, environmental chemistry, food technology, and agriculture. This review discusses Schiff base compounds and their applications in the design and development of ion selective sensors and microsensors.

Novel ampholytic terpolymer of N-vinylformamide (NVF), vinylamine (VAm) and sodium acrylate (NA) with low cationic proportion was obtained by hydrolyzing copolymer of NVF and NA (PNVFNA). Solution properties of the polymer were investigated by methods of turbidity and viscosity experiment. The effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on solution viscosity was also investigated. The results showed that the turbidity curves were bimodal, and pH 3.0 was determined as the isoelectric point (IEP).

Here, we demonstrated dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide (DODAB), a cationic lipid, bilayer coated Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) could efficiently deliver two types of plasmid DNA into human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293) in the presence of serum. The transfection efficiency of AuNPs was about five times higher than that of DODAB. The interaction of AuNPs with DNA was characterized with dye intercalation assay and agarose gel electrophoresis. The morphology of the complex of AuNPs with DNA was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The intracellular trafficking of the complex was monitored with transmission electron microscope (TEM).

A novel catalyst system based on nickel(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (Ni(II)TPP) and methylaluminoxane for styrene polymerization was developed. This catalyst system has a high thermal stability and show fairly good activity. The obtained polystyrene (PS) was isotactic-rich atactic polymer by C-13 NMR analysis, and its molecular weight distribution was rather narrow (M-w/M-n approximate to 1.6, by GPC analysis). ESR revealed that Ni(II)TPP pi cation radicals were formed in the polymerization and could remain in the resulting PS stably. The mechanism of the polymerization was discussed and a special coordination mechanism was proposed. The PS product containing Ni(II)TPP pi cation radicals can be used as a potential functional material.

Cobalt porphyrin complex ((TPPCoX)-X-III) (TPP = 5, 10, 15, 20-Tetraphenylporphyrin; X = halide) in combination with ionic organic ammonium salt was used for the regio-specific copolymerization of propylene oxide and carbon dioxide. A turnover frequency of 188 h(-1) was achieved after 5 h, and the byproduct propylene carbonate was successfully controlled to below 1%, where the obtained poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) showed number average molecular weight (M-n) of 48 kg/mol, head-to-tail content of 93%, and carbonate linkage of over 99%.

Chloro( 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-porphyrinato)-aluminum/tetraethylammonium bromide ( Et4NBr) in combination with bulky Lewis acid was used for the copolymerization of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide ( CHO). Bulky Lewis acid having substituents at the ortho positions of the phenolate ligands, like methylaluminum bis(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate), significantly shortened the induction period and raised the catalytic activity, the corresponding turnover frequency reached 44.9 h(-1) in 9 h, which was 23.8% higher than that from ( TPP)AlCl/Et4NBr binary catalyst. The resulting polycarbonate has carbonate linkage over 93% with number average molecular weight of ( 4.5-6.5) x 10(3) and polydispersity index below 1.10.
