The concentrations of polychlorinayed dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) in surface sediment, soil, human hair, acid fish muscle from Ya-Er Lake area, China, were analyzed. The results showed that there were very high concentrations of PCDD/F existing in these samples. The results also indicated that Ya-Er Lake, which received a large amount of waste water from a nearby chloroalkali plant, was heavily polluted by PCDD:F. The present study demonstrated that those congeners, which possess at least three chlorine atoms in the lateral position with a fourth chlorine atom in the neighborhood bond of the third single chlorine atom, such as 1,2,7,8-TCDF and 2,3.6,7-TCDF, were very resistant to biodegradation due to the "neighbor effect" of every two chlorine atoms. The present study suggested that human hair may be a suitable alternative bioindicator for detecting PCDD/F exposure. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Several biochemical responses were measured in silver crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) after exposure to sediments obtained from contaminated Ya-Er Lake, No, 1 pond, and an unpolluted reference site, Honglian Lake. After 1 week of exposure, a significant induction of the phase I biotransformation enzyme (ethoxylresorufin-o-deethylase, EROD) was found (83-fold of control), whereas the phase II biotransformation enzyme (glutathione S-transferase, GST) exhibited a slight, but significant induction (1,4-fold of control) after 4 weeks of exposure. The level of cellular glutathione in the liver was also slightly elevated after 4 weeks of exposure. The delayed response of GST to the contaminants indicates that the phase I and phase II biotransformation enzymes are regulated differently in fish. The results suggest that EROD is a sensitive bioindicator to assess the toxicity of dioxin-contamined sediment in the laboratory, (C) 1998 Academic Press.

At 18 degrees C and 33 psu, 24 and 48 h LC50 values of cadmium (Cd) for red sea bream Pagrus major embryos were 9.8 and 6.6 mg l(-1), respectively, while 24,48, 72, and 96 h LC50 values for larvae were 18.9,16.2, 8.0, and 5.6 mg l(-1), respectively, indicating that embryos were more sensitive to Cd toxicity than larvae. Cd concentrations at >= 0.8 mg l(-1) led to low hatchability (0-90% in >= 0.8 mg l(-1) solutions vs. 97-100% in lower ones), delay in time to hatch, high mortality (38-100% vs. 1-10%), morphological abnormality (42-100% vs. 1-10%), reduced length (3.55-3.60 vs. 3.71-3.72 mm) in the embryos and larvae. They were Cd concentration dependent and potential biological significant endpoints for assessing the risk of Cd to aquatic organisms. Heart beat and yolk absorption of the larvae were significantly inhibited at some high concentrations but they were not as sensitive as other endpoints to Cd exposure. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc.
