The use of least-squres polynomial smoothing in ICP-AES is discussed and a method of points insertion into spectral scanning intervals is proposed in the present paper. Optimal FWHM/SR ratio can be obtained, and distortion of smoothed spectra can be avoided by use of the recommended method.

Strong laser-field-induced autoionisation in the presence of both photoionising and radiative decay of the autoionising state (AS) is investigated, focusing on the laser intensity dependence of the photoemission and photoelectron spectra. In contrast to previous predictions, power broadening and increasing reduction of the doublet peak heights with field strength are found in the photoemission spectrum. Similar effects leading to considerable suppression and even complete disappearance of the lowest-order peaks in the photoelectron spectrum, together with peak switching, are also demonstrated, which are closely related to above-threshold ionisation. In addition, it is suggested that the total number of energetic photoelectrons may serve as an alternative to measuring the atomic parameters of the AS. All these effects are attributed to the presence of the strong `probe': laser-induced decay of the AS.

The influence of atomic densities on the propagation property for ultrashort pulses in a two-level atom (TLA) medium is investigated. With higher atomic densities, the self-induced transparency (SIT) cannot be recovered even for 2π ultrashort pulses. New features such as pulse splitting, red-shift and blue-shift of the corresponding spectra arise, and the component of central frequency gradually disappears.

The interaction between integrin macrophage differentiation antigen associated with complement three receptor function (Mac-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), which is controlled tightly by the ligand-binding activity of Mac-1, is central to the regulation of neutrophil adhesion in host defense. Several "inside-out" signals and extracellular metal ions or antibodies have been found to activate Mac-1, resulting in an increased adhesiveness of Mac-1 to its ligands. However, the molecular basis for Mac-1 activation is not well understood yet. In this work, we have carried out a single-molecule study of Mac-1/ICAM-1 interaction force in living cells by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our results showed that the binding probability and adhesion force of Mac-1 with ICAM-1 increased upon Mac-1 activation. Moreover, by comparing the dynamic force spectra of different Mac-1 mutants, we expected that Mac-1 activation is governed by the downward movement of its alpha 7 helix. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. We have investigated the spectra of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) when a cell is filled with a buffer gas. Our theoretical results show that the buffer gas can induce a narrower spectra line and steeper dispersion than those of the usual EIT case in a homogeneous and Doppler broadened system. The linewidth decreases with the increase of the buffer gas pressure. This narrow spectra may be applied to quantum information processing, nonlinear optics and atomic frequency standard.

Two types of InAs self-assembled Quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by Molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements showed that, compared to QDs grown on GaAs substrate, QDs grown on InGaAs layer has a significantly enhanced density. The short spacing (several nanometer) among QDs stimulates strong coupling and leads to a large red-shift of the 1.3 mu m photoluminescence (PL) peak. We study systematically the dependence of PL lifetime on the QDs size, density and temperature (1). We found that, below 50 K, the PL lifetime is insensitive to temperature, which is interpreted from the localization effects. As T increases, the PL lifetime increases, which can be explained from the competition between the carrier redistribution and thermal emission at higher temperature. The increase of carriers in QDs migrated from barriers and wetting layer (WL), and the redistribution of carriers among QDs enhance the PL lifetime as T increases. The thermal emission and non-radiative recombination have effects to reduce the PL lifetime at higher T. As a result, the radiative recombination lifetime is determined by the wave function overlapping of electrons and holes in QDs, and QDs with different densities have different PL lifetime dependence on the QDs size. Optical spectra of CdSe nanocrystals are measured at room temperature under pressure ranging from 0 to 5.2 GPa. The exciton energies shift linearly with pressure below 5.2 GPa. The pressure coefficient is 27 meV GPa(-1) for small CdSe nanocrystals with the radius of 2.4 nm. With the approximation of a rigid-atomic pseudopotential, the pressure coefficients of the energy band are calculated. By using the hole effective-mass Hamiltonian for the semiconductors with wurtzite structure under various pressures, we study the exciton states and optical spectra for CdSe nanocrystals under hydrostatic pressure in detail. The intrinsic asymmetry of the hexagonal lattice structure and the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the hole states are investigated. The Coulomb interaction of the exciton states is also taken into account. It is found that the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental values.

Using the slow highly charged ions Xe-129(q+) (q = 25, 26, 27; initial kinetic T-0 <= 4.65 keV/a.u.) to impact Au surface, the Au atomic M alpha characteristic X-ray spectrum is induced. The result shows that as long as the charge state of projectile is high enough, the heavy atomic characteristic X-ray can be effectively excited even though the incident beam is very weak (nA magnitude), and the X-ray yield per ion is in the order of 10(-8) and increases with the kinetic energy and potential energy of projectile. By measuring the Au M alpha-X-ray spectra, Au atomic N-level lifetime is estimated at about 1.33x10(-18) s based on Heisenberg uncertainty relation.

The spectrum of highly ionized titanium was studied by means of the beam-foil technique. Titanium ions were provided by the HI-13 tandem accelerator at China Institute of Atomic Energy. The experimental results are compared with those of laser-produced plasmas. Numerous lines attributed to Ti XVI to XVIII ransitions have been identified, and three of them were newly measured, which were attributed to 2s2p(24)P(3/2)-2p(32)D(3/2), 2s2p(21)S(0)-2sp(31)P(1) and 4p(1)P(0)-5d(1)P(1) transitions.

This paper reports laboratory measurements of the spectrum of the most abundant transition Fe ions in the universe. Spectrum of iron of low-lying excited states has been observed in the wavelength range 250-400 angstrom at Chinese Institute of Atomic Energy on the HI-13 tandem accelerator with beams of 130 MeV. A number of spectral lines have been mainly classified as transitions of magnesium-, sodium-, neon-, fluorine-like ions. A total of 54 lines have been measured. Most of them have been mainly ascribed to 3s3p(k)-3p(k+1), 3s(2)3p(k)-3s3p(k+1), 2p(5)3s-2p(5)3p, 3s3d-3p3d and 2p(5)3p-2p(5)3d resonance transitions. These spectral lines have been identified, among which 21 are new and accurately measured. The analysis of the spectra was based on a comparison with other experimental results and calculated values. The growth kinetics of self-assembled monolayers formed by exposing freshly cleaved mica to octanol solution has been studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). AFM images of samples immersed in octanol for varying exposure times showed that before forming a complete monolayer the octanol molecules aggregated in the form of small islands on the mica surface. With the proceeding of immersion, these islands gradually grew and merged into larger patches. Finally, a close-packed film with uniform appearance and few defects was formed. The thickness of the final film showed 0.8 nm in height, which corresponded to the 40degrees tilt molecular conformation of the octanol monolayer. The growth mechanisms consisted of nucleation, growth, and coalescence of the submonolayer films. The growth process was also confirmed by FTIR. And the surface coverage of the submonolayer islands estimated from AFM images and FTIR spectra as a function of immersion time was quite consistent.

The charactesistics of two-dimension spectra obtained by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) with charge injection detection (CID) in frequency domain were studied in the present paper. The measurement spectra were Fourier transformed and the frequency distribution of the spectra was obtained. Results showed that the spectra in frequency domain could he divided into two parts:high frequency and low frequency signals. The later stood for measurement spectra and the former for background and noises. However, the high frequecny signals could not be smoothed simply to reduce noises because the background was deteriorated even though the spectral signal did not change significantly.

Correction of spectral overlap interference in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry by factor analysis is attempted. For the spectral overlap of two known lines, a data matrix can be composed from one or two pure spectra and a spectrum of the mixture. The data matrix is decomposed into a spectra matrix and a concentration matrix by target transformation factor analysis. The component concentration of interest in a binary mixture is obtained from the concentration matrix and interference from the other component is eliminated. This method is applied to correcting spectral interference of yttrium on the determination of copper and aluminium: satisfactory results are obtained. This method may also be applied to correcting spectral overlap interference for more than two lines. Like other methods of correcting spectral interferences, factor analysis can only be used for additive spectral overlap. Results obtained from measurements on copper/yttrium mixtures with different white noise added show that random errors in measurement data do not significantly affect the results of the correction method.
