Three organoselenium-containing derivatives of beta-cyclodextrins (beta-CD), mono-6-benzylseleno-6-deoxy-beta-cyclodextrin (compound 1), 6,6'-trimethylenediseleno bridged beta-cyclodextrin dimer(compound 2) and 6,6'- (o-phenylene)diseleno bridged beta-cyclodextrin dimer (compound 3) functioned as mimics of selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase(SeGPX). Acting on H2O2 and GSH, the SeGPX activities of these compounds were 0.83-, 0.26-, and 1. 23-fold of that of Ebselen (0.99 U/mu mol), respectively. The relationship between the structure and the function of these compounds was studied. The results suggested that the hydrophobicity and rigidity of phenyl group is the main reason that accounted for the higher activity of compounds 3 and 1. Phenyl group not only provided the hydrophobic circumstance which is necessary for the catalytic function of selenium, but also make it possible that the cyclodextrin unit of compounds 1 and 3 combines the substrate with a more effective direction. Fluorometric techniques were utilized to determine the yields of the hydroxyl radical produced by Fenton reactions through the formation of hydroxy benzoic acids from benzoate. Compared with Ebselen which showed a significant inhibition effect on the formation of HO., these organoselenium-containing cyclodextrins showed a little scavenging effect on the formation of HO. throughout the whole process.

Self-assembled monolayers of 1-teradecanethiol on gold were characterized by means of FTIR-ATR measurements, XPS and contact angle measurements. Linear dichroism measurements using FTIR-ATR are used to estimate the orientation of the alkyl chains. An equation for calculating the orientation angles of the alkyls chains was deduced. Phycobiliproteins, together with linker polypeptides and various chromophores, are basic building blocks of phycobilisomes, a supramolecular complex with a light-harvesting function in cyanobacteria and red algae. Previous studies suggest that the different types of phycobiliproteins and the linker polypeptides originated from the same ancestor. Here we retrieve the phycobilisome-related genes from the well-annotated and even unfinished cyanobacteria genomes and find that many sites with elevated d(N)/d(S) ratios in different phycobiliprotein lineages are located in the chromophore-binding domain and the helical hairpin domains (X and Y). Covariation analyses also reveal that these sites are significantly correlated, showing strong evidence of the functional-structural importance of interactions among these residues. The potential selective pressure driving the diversification of phycobiliproteins may be related to the phycobiliprotein-chromophore microenvironment formation and the subunits interaction. Sites and genes identified here would provide targets for further research on the structural-functional role of these residues and energy transfer through the chromophores.

It has been found that microbial communities play a significant role in the corrosion process of steels exposed in aquatic and soil environments. Biomineralization influenced by microorganisms is believed to be responsible for the formation of corrosion products via complicated pathways of electron transfer between microbial cells and the metal. In this study, sulfide corrosion products were investigated for 316L stainless steel exposed to media with sulfate-reducing bacteria media for 7 weeks. The species of inorganic and organic sulfides in the passive film on the stainless steel were observed by epifluorescence microscope, environmental scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The transformation from metal oxides to metal sulfides influenced by sulfate-reducing bacteria is emphasized in this paper. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
