Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has attracted wide attention due to its many advantages. However, its practical application is limited by the low electrocatalytic activity of the anodic Pt/C catalyst usually used for the methanol oxidation. In this paper, in order to increase the electrocatalytic performance of the Pt/C catalyst for the methanol oxidation, the black carbon, usually used as the supporter, was pretreated with CO2, air, HNO3 or H2O2. The cyclic voltarnmetric results indicated that the current densities of the anodic peak of methanol oxidation at the Pt/C catalysts with the black carbon pretreated with CO2,air, HN03, H202 and untreated black carbon were 39, 33, 32, 20 and 18 mA center dot cm(-2), respectively, illustrating that among the above five kinds of the Pt/C catalysts, the Pt/C catalyst with the black carbon pretreated with CO2 shows the best electrocatalytic activity and stability for the methanol oxidation. Its main reason is that the CO2 pretreatment could reduce the content of the oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the black carbon and increase the content of graphite in the black carbon, leading to the low resistance of the black carbon and the increase in the dispersion extent of the Pt particles in the Pt/C catalyst.

It has been reported for the first time that an electrochemical gas sensor mdified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) film as elctrocatalyst was fabricated for the determination of chlorine (Cl-2).Here, MWNTs and graphite were compared with each other in terms of their electrochemical properties using cyclic voltammetry. Cl-2 gas was allowed through the cathode surface of the sensor and the resulting galvanic effects were monitored. Results indicated that both of the MWNTs and graphite have the electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of Cl-2 while the MWNTs-modified electrode exhibited a higher accessible surface area in electrochemical reactions, excellent sensitivity, stable response, reproducibility and recovery for the determination of Cl-2.

A novel sulfonated aromatic dichloride monomer was successfully prepared by the reaction of 2, 5-dichlorobenzophenone with fuming sulfuric acid. Copolymerization of this monomer in the form of sodium salt (1) with N-(4-chloro-2-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-chloro-1,8-naphthalimide (2) or bis(N-(4-chloro-2-trifluoromethylphenyl)1,4,5,8-naphthalimide (3) generated two series of novel poly(arylene-co-naphthalimide) s I-x and II-x where x represents the content of the sulfonated monomer. The synthesized copolymers with the -SO3H group in the side chains possessed high molecular weights revealed by their high viscosity and the formation of tough and flexible membranes. The copolymers exhibited excellent stability toward water and oxidation due to the introduction of the hydrophobic CF3 groups. The sulfonated copolyimides that incorporated with 1,8-naphthalimide (I-x) exhibited better hydrolytic and oxidative stabilities than those with 1,4,5,8-naphthalimide. Copolymer I-50 membrane endured for more than 83 h in Fenton's reagent at room temperature. The mechanical properties of I-50 membrane kept almost unchanged after immersing membrane in boiling water for 196 h. The proton conductivities of copolymer films increased with increasing IEC and temperature, reaching values above 6.8 x 10(-1) S/cm at 80 degrees C.

Sulfonated poly(p-phenylene)s (SPPs) containing sulfonic acid groups in their side chains had been directly synthesized by Ni(0) catalytic coupling of sodium 3-(2,5-dichlorobenzoyl)benzenesulfonate and 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The synthesized copolymers possessed high molecular weights revealed by their high viscosity, and the formation of tough and flexible membranes by casting from DMAc solution. The copolymers exhibited excellent oxidative stability and mechanical properties due to their fully aromatic structure extending through the backbone and pendent groups. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis revealed that these side-chain type SPP membranes have a microphase-separated structure composed of hydrophilic side-chain domains and hydrophobic polyphenylene main chain domains. The proton conductivities of copolymer membranes increased with the increase of IEC and temperature, reaching values above 3.4 x 10(-1) S/cm at 120 degrees C, which are almost 2-3 times higher than that of Nafion 117 at the same measurement conditions. Consequently, these materials proved to be promising as proton exchange membranes.

It is suggested that a Pt/C cathodic catalyst for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) can be prepared with a pre-precipitation method, in which, H2PtCl6 is precipitated onto the carbon black as (NH4)(2)PtCl6 before H2PtCl6 is reduced to Pt. The electrocatalytic activity of this Pt/C-A catalyst for oxygen reduction is excellent because the Pt/C catalyst prepared with this pre-precipitation method possesses a small average particle size, low relative crystalinity and a large electrochemically active surface area. In addition, the pre-precipitation method is simple and economical and it can be used to prepare a Pt/C catalyst on a large scale.

Three kinds of surfactants as stabilizer were applied to the preparation of electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The catalysts have been characterized by examining their catalytic activities, morphologies and particle sizes by means of cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is found that the surfactants with different structures have a significantly influence on the catalyst shape and activity. The catalysts prepared with non-ionic surfactants as the stabilizer show higher activity for direct oxidation of methanol. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis has been explored and the effect of hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB value) has also been discussed.

The effect of metal cations in solution on the oxidation of methanol on the electrode surface of platinum is a neglected aspect to direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). In this paper, a smooth platinum electrode absorbing metal cations as the working electrode was applied to investigate the methanol oxidation with the cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1.0 mol L-1 H2SO4. From the analysis of experiment, it is found that the cations, Li+, Ce4+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, have some negative effect on the catalytic oxidation of methanol on the surface of platinum. The degree of the effect from different cations was analyzed.

In this paper, it was reported that the carbon-supported Pt-Ru(Pt-Ru/C) catalyst used as the anodic catalyst in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was synthesized with a two-step spray pyrolysis (SP) method using the Pt and Ru metal salt as the precursors and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with the different molecular weights (Mw= 200,600,and 1000 analytical reagent) as cosolvent. PEG as a cosolvent plays a crucial role in producing PtRu/C catalysts. It was found that the Mw of PEG could affect the electrocatalytic activity of Pt-Ru and the morphology of the Pt-Ru particles in the Pt-Ru/C catalysts prepared with this method. When the Mw of PEG is 600, the Pt-Ru particles in the Pt-Ru/C catalyst prepared with this method possess the small average size, narrow size distribution, uniform dispersion, and high electrochemically active specific surface area. The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst prepared with this method using the cosolvent PEG with Mw = 600 for the methanol oxidation is much higher than that of the commercial E-TEK Pt-Ru/C catalyst. Therefore, the two-step SP method is an excellent method for the preparation of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst used in DMFCs.

Cobalt boride precursors were synthesized via chemical reaction of aqueous sodium borohydride with cobalt chloride, and followed by heat-treating at various temperatures. The as-prepared Co-B catalysts were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption and catalytic activity test; and were adopted to help accelerating hydrolysis reaction of NaBH4 alkaline solution. The Co-B catalyst treated at 500 degrees C exhibits the best catalytic activity, and achieves an average H, generation rate of 2970 ml/min/g, which may give a successive H, supply for a 481 W proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at 100% H-2 utilization. In the present work, Nafion (R) membrane porosity changes were determined in aqueous ethanol solutions with different concentrations by weighing vacuum-dried and ethanol aqueous solution equilibrated membranes at room temperature. The ethanol crossover rate through Nafion (R)-115 membrane at different temperatures and different concentrations had been investigated in a fuel cell test apparatus by using membrane gets higher as ethanol solution gas chromatography analysis. The experimental results show that the swelling degree of Nafion (R) concentration increases. The ethanol crossover rate increases with ethanol concentration and temperature increment. The single direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) tests were carried out to investigate the effect of ethanol concentration on ethanol crossover and consequently, on the open circuit voltage and the cell performance of DEFC. It can be found that ethanol crossover presented a negative effect on the OCV and the cell performance of DEFC. It can also be found that an improved DEFC performance was obtained as temperature increased although the ethanol crossover rate increased with temperature increment. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. In the present study, a method based on transmission-line mode for a porous electrode was used to measure the ionic resistance of the anode catalyst layer under in situ fuel cell operation condition. The influence of Nafion content and catalyst loading in the anode catalyst layer on the methanol electro-oxidation and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance based on unsupported Pt-Ru black was investigated by using the AC impedance method. The optimal Nafion content was found to be 15 wt% at 75 degrees C. The optimal Pt-Ru loading is related to the operating temperature, for example, about 2.0 mg/cm(2) for 75-90 degrees C, 3.0 mg/cm2 for 50 degrees C. Over these values, the cell performance decreased due to the increases in ohmic and mass transfer resistances. It was found that the peak power density obtained was 217 mW/cm(2) with optimal catalyst and Nafion loading at 75 degrees C using oxygen. (c) 2005 International Association for Hydrogen Energy. In the present investigation, the electrochemically-assisted oxidation of benzene in a H-2-O-2 proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for electricity and phenol cogeneration is studied. Experiments were carried out in a PEMFC electrochemical reactor using Pd black as cathode electrocatalyst at 60 and 80 degrees C, respectively and 1 atm back pressure. Indeed, it was found that the only product detected under the examined experimental conditions was phenol. The online GC product analysis revealed that it is impossible to produce phenol when the fuel cell circuit is open (I = 0) under all the examined experimental conditions. When the fuel cell circuit was closed, however, the phenol yield was found to follow a volcano-type dependence on the cur-rent of the external circuit. It was found that the maximum phenol yield was 0.35% at 100 mA/cm(2) at 80 degrees C. At the same time, the PEMFC performance was also investigated during the phenol generation process. Furthermore, experiments with the rotating ring disc electrode (RRDE) technique showed that the intermediate oxidation product, i.e. H2O2 existed during the oxygen electro-reduction process. The cyclic voltammograms showed that benzene was strongly adsorbed on the Pd surface, leading to a degradation of the PEMFC performance. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The performance of an all-solid-state cell having a lithium negative electrode, a modified polyethylene oxide (PEO)-epoxy resin (ER) electrolyte, and a polyaniline (PAn) positive electrode has been studied using cyclic voltammetry, charge/discharge cycling, and polarization curves at various temperatures. The redox reaction of the PAn electrode at the PAn/modifed PEO-ER interface exhibits good reversibility. At 50-80-degrees-C, the Li/PEO-ER-LiClO4/PAn cell shows more than 40 charge/discharge cycles, 90% charge/discharge efficiency, and 54 W h kg-1 discharge energy density (on PAn weight basis) at 50-mu-A between 2 and 4 V. The polarization performance of the battery improves steadily with increase in temperature.
