Circular dichoism and UV-vis measurements were used to study the interaction between porphyrin and monoclonal antibodies ( McAbs). McAbs-porphyrin complex formation is usually accompanied by significant bathochromic shift and hyperchromicity changes of the absorption maxima in the porphyrin soret band region. Induced CD spectra in the same region (350 similar to 450 nm) were detected upon complex formation. They follow Lamb-Beer's law and exhibit isosbestic behavior. Both the UV-Vis and induced CD spectra of the antibody: porphyrin complex remain unchanged over a broad pH range ( pH 6 similar to 11), indicating remarkable stability of the complex and reflecting the dominant role of hydrophobic interaction between the hapten benzophenone and the antibody combining site.

Nanocrystalline YVO4:A (A = Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+) phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical microscopy, UV/vis transmission and absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 400 degreesC and the crystallinity increased with the increase of annealing temperatures. Transparent nonpatterned phosphor films were uniform and crack-free, which mainly consisted of grains with an average size of 90 nm. Patterned gel and crystalline phosphor film bands with different widths (5-60 mum) were obtained. Significant shrinkage and a few defects were observed in the patterned films during the heat treatment process. The doped rare earth ions (A) showed their characteristic emission in crystalline YVO4 phosphor films because of an efficient energy transfer from vanadate groups to them. The Sm3+ and Er3+ ions also showed upconversion luminescence in a YVO4 film host. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the rare earth ions increased with increasing annealing temperature from 400 to 800 degreesC, and the optimum concentration for Eu3+ was determined to be 7 mol % and those for Dy3+, Sm3-, and Er3+ were 2 Mol % of Y3- in YVO4 films, respectively.

A novel organic-inorganic hybrid compound {[Cu (2, 2'-bpy)(2)](2)Mo8O26} has been hydrothermally Synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group, Pna2(1), with a=2.4164 (5), b=1.8281 (4), c=1.1877 (2) nm, V=5.247(2) nm(3), Z=4, and final R-1=0.0331, wR(2)=0.0727. The structure consists of discrete {[Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2)](2)Mo8O26} clusters, constructed from a beta -octamolybdate subunit[Mo8O26](4-) covalently bonded to two [Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2)](2+) coordination complex cations via bridging oxo groups. In addition, the spectroscopic properties and thermal behavior of this compound have been investigated by spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, IR, Raman and EPR spectra) and TG analysis.

Electrochemically induced three conformational transitions of calf thymus DNA from B-10.4 to Z(10.2)-DNA and from B-10.2 to B-10.4 and to C-DNA in 10 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.21) at glassy carbon electrode are found and studied by in situ circular dichroism (CD) thin layer spectroelectrochemistry with singular value decomposition least square (SVDLS) analysis. It indicates that the so-called B-10.2 form and the C-form of DNA may be composed of B-10.4 and left-A DNA and of B-10.4 and right-A DNA, respectively. The irreversible electrochemical reduction of adenine and cytosine groups in the DNA molecule is studied by UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry. Some electrochemical parameters alphan = 0.17, E-0' = -0.70 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), and the standard heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant, k(0) = 1.8 x 10(-5) cm s(-1) are obtained by double logarithmic analysis and non-linear regression. Stable monolayer of polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid at the air-water interface has been obtained and has been successfully deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto CaF2 substrate. IR and UV-Vis-NIR spectra show that the doped molecules dedoped partially from the PANI backbone during the monolayer compression or deposition. Gas-sensing measurement indicates that the doped polyaniline LB film was sensitive to ethanol vapor at room temperature.

The infrared spectra of BaLnB(9)O(16):Re, along with the VUV excitation spectra, have been measured. The spectra were tentatively interpreted in terms of the data on absorptions of the borate groups and band structure. It was observed that there are absorption due to BO3 and BO4 groups, indicating that there are BO3 and BO4 groups in BaLnB(9)O(16). It is found that absorption of the borate groups is located in the range from 120 to 170 mn. This result reveals that there is an energy transfer from host to the rare earth ions. It also observed that the energy of charge transfer band, the host absorption, the total crystal field splitting of d-levels of Tb3+ increase with the decrease in the Ln(3+) radius. In this presentation, a reverse micelle technique was described to create colloid gold nanoparticles and their self-organization into superlattices. Gold nanoparticles were prepared by the reduction of HAuCL4 in CTAB/octane + 1-butanol/H2O reverse micelle system using NaBH4 as reducing agent. Dodecanethiol (C12H25SH) was used to passivate the gold nanoparticles immediately after formation of the gold colloid. After re-dispersing in toluene under ultrasonication, a supernatant containing nearly monodispersed dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles was obtained. Self-organization of the gold nanoparticles into 1D, 2D and 3D superlattices was observed on the carbon-coated copper grid by TEM. UV-vis absorption spectra were also used to characterize the gold colloids with and without dodecanethiol capping. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of amphiphilic polymers, monoesters of polymaleic acid containing ate-side groups (PMAN-A(n)Me) was synthesized by the reaction of alcohol(A,Me) with polymaleic anhydride (PMAN) for Langmuir-Blodgett assembly. The effects of the length of flexible spacer in the side chain on the pi-A isotherms and LB films were investigated. The UV-Vis and infrared linear dichroism spectra showed that the ate-side groups were highly oriented in PMAN-A(6)Me LB film deposited on silica or CaF2 substrate.

The diffuse reflectance spectra of nanocrystalline Nd2O3 were measured in the ultraviolet-visible region, It is found that the part of f-->f transition bands were widened and red-shift occurred. The absorption tail-band in the region from 300 to 550 nm was assigned to the O-2p-->Nd-4f transition. The behavior of light-induced charge transfer and photovoltaic properties of nanocrystalline Nd2O3 were studied by the surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS) and electric field modulating SPS techniques. The SPS response shows two peaks at 330 nm(P-1) and 380 nm(P-2) in the UV-Vis range, The spectral features observed can be explained in terms of charge transfer and interband transition.

The diffuse reflectance spectra of nanocrystalline Er2O3 were measured in the UV-vis region. It was found that the f -> f transition bands become stronger with the decrease of the size of particles. The tail-band in the range of 300 similar to 550nm was assigned to the O2p -> Er4f transition. Both behavior of light-induced charge transfer and photovoltaic properties of nanocrystalline Er2O3 were investigated with surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS). The SPS shows that two peaks appear at 340nm (p(1)) and 385nm (p(2)). The observed spectral features can be explained in terms of charge transfer and interband transition.

Nickel tungstate (NiWO4) nano-particles were successfully synthesized at low temperatures by a molten salt method, and characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet visible spectra techniques (UV-vis), respectively. The effects of calcining temperature and salt quantity on the crystallization and development of NiWO4 crystallites were studied. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized NiWO4 nano-particles with about 30 nm in diameter could be prepared at 270 degrees C with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to NiWO4 precursor. XRD analysis confirmed that the product was a pure monoclinic phase of NiWO4 with wolframite structure. UV-vis spectrum revealed that NiWO4 nano-particles had good light absorption properties in both ultraviolet and visible light region. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Silicalite-I, ZSM-5, and Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared from two different silicon sources are characterized by UV resonance Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron spin resonance (ESR), and UV/visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV/Vis DRS). A new technique for investigating zeolitic structure, UV resonance Raman spectroscopy selectively enhances the Raman bands associated with framework iron atoms incorporated into MFI-type zeolites, and it is very sensitive in identifying the iron atoms in the framework of zeolites, while other techniques such as XRD, ESR, and UV/Vis DRS have failed in uncovering trace amounts of iron atoms in the framework of zeolites. The phase transformation of zirconia from tetragonal to monoclinic is characterized by UV Raman spectroscopy, visible Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. Electronic absorption Of ZrO2 in the UV region makes UV Raman spectroscopy more sensitive at the surface region than XRD or visible Raman spectroscopy. Zirconia changes from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase with calcination temperatures elevated and monoclinic phase is always detected first by UV Raman spectroscopy for the samples calcined at lower temperatures than that by XRD and visible Raman spectroscopy. When the phase of zirconia changes from tetragonal to monoclinic, the slight changes of the phase at very beginning can be detected by UV Raman spectroscopy. UV Raman spectra clearly indicate that the phase transition takes place initially at the surface regions. It is found that the phase change from tetragonal to monoclinic is significantly retarded when amorphous Zr(OH)(4) was agglomerated to bigger particles and the particle agglomeration of amorphous zirconium hydroxide is beneficial to the stabilization of t-ZrO2 phase.
