The mixed mode of reversed phase (RP) and strong canon-exchange (SCX) capillary electrochromatography (CEC) based on a monolithic capillary column has been developed. The capillary monolithic column was prepared by in situ copolymerization of 2-(sulfooxy)ethyl methacrylate (SEMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) in the presence of porogens. The sulfate group provided by the monomer SEMA on the monolithic bed is used for the generation of the electroosmotic flow (EOF) from the anode to the cathode, but at the same time serves as a SCX stationary phase. A mixed-mode (RP/SCX) mechanism for separation of peptides was observed in the monolithic column, comprising hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction as well as electrophoretic migration at a low pH value of mobile phase. A column efficiency of more than 280000 plates/m for the unretained compound has been obtained on the prepared monoliths. The relative standard deviations observed for to and retention factors of peptides were about 0.32% and less than 0.71% for ten consecutive runs, respectively. Effects of mobile phase compositions on the EOF of the monolithic column and on the separation of peptides were investigated. The selectivity on separation of peptides in the monolithic capillary column could be easily manipulated by varying the mobile phase composition.

A theoretical study on the velocity of electroosmotic flow (EOF) and the retention times of neutral solutes under multiple-step gradient of capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was carried out, focusing on that with three kinds of mobile phases. Through the model computations, the detaining time of the second kind of mobile phase in the column was proved to play an important role in affecting EOF. The variation speed of EOF was shown to be determined by the differences among dead times in different steps. In addition, the prediction of the retention times of 13 aromatic compounds under gradient mode was performed with the deduced equations. A relative error below 3.3% between the calculated and experimental values was obtained, which demonstrated the rationality of the theoretical deduction. Our study could not only improve the comprehension of stepwise gradient elution, but also be of significance for the further optimization of separation conditions in the analysis of complex samples.

A pressurized capillary electrochromatography (pCEC) instrument with solvent gradient capability has been used for the separation of a peptide mixture. Retention mechanism and selectivity of the peptides were studied by pCEC using a strong cation exchange (SCX) column. The effects of applied voltage, supplementary pressure, organic modifier concentration, ionic strength,, and pH value on pCEC separation were investigated. It was found that the retention mechanism of the peptides in this system is based on a mixed mode of hydrophilic interaction, strong cation exchange, and electrophoresis. Compared with the separation results obtained by reverse phase pCEC and capillary electrophoresis (CE), this mixed-mode pCEC is more powerful for the separation of hydrophilic peptides with similar charge-to-mass ratio.

Characteristics of electroosmotic flow (EOF) and the migration of neutral solutes under double stepwise gradient elution in capillary electrochromatography were studied systematically. EOF velocity proved to be the function of operation time changing with the introduction of the second mobile phase. Accordingly, the retention of components also changed. The migration of neutral solutes was studied under the following three situations; A, components eluted when the column was filled only with the first kind of mobile phase; B, solutes eluted still in the first kind of mobile phase while at that time two kinds of mobile phase coexisted in the column and C, samples eluted in the second kind of mobile phase. Equations to describe the retention times of components under these three kinds of conditions were deduced and applied to predict the retention times of 12 aromatic compounds. Relative errors between experimental and calculated values were below 5.0%, which proved the reliability of the equations. In addition, parameters that might affect the retention time of solutes, such as the transferring time of mobile phase vials, the capacity factors of components and EOF velocities two steps were studied systematically (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Separation of drug enantiomers by capillary electrophoresis in the presence of neutral cyclodextrins

This is a selected review, highlighting our results obtained in an extended screening program ("The German-Chinese Drug Screening Program"), with a focus on a set of original data obtained with heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-beta-cyclodextrin(TM-beta-CD) as the chiral solvating agent (CSA). The enantioseparation of 86 drugs by capillary zone electrophoresis in the presence of this CSA was successful for 47 drugs. The migration separation factors (alpha(m)) and the migration retardation factors (R-m) were compared with those found for native beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). The patterns thus obtained were also compared with those observed for hexakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-alpha-CD (TM-alpha-CD) and octakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-gamma-CD (TM-gamma-CD), respectively. From the statistical data, it can be concluded that there is a remarkable influence of the analyte structure on the electrophoretic data. A substructure 4H was found in the analyte structure that has a significant influence on the analytes' behaviour. Thus, analytes bearing the substructure 4H do not only have a strong affinity to the CDs but also a high rate of success of chiral separation in all systems reviewed. In light of this, the different ring sizes of native cyclodextrins (alpha-, beta- and gamma-CD) readily explain their behaviour towards a limited test set of chiral drugs. Sterical considerations point to the significance of side-on-binding versus inclusion in the cavity of the host. In addition to the findings from the screening program, numerous references to the Literature are given. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Deformation behavior of polyethylene/modified montmorillonites with polymerizable surfactant (PE/P-MMT) nanocomposite with strong interfacial interaction was studied by means of morphology observation and X-ray scattering measurements. The orientation of PE chains was accompanied by the orientation of well-dispersed MMT platelets due to the presence of strong interfacial interaction, and both of the orientations were parallel to the deformation direction. The high degree of orientation of MMT platelets and PE chains resulted from the synergistic movement of PE matrix and MMTs, which originated from the presence of a network-like structure.

A facile and efficient strategy for the syntheses of novel hyperbranched poly(ether amide)s (HPEA) from multihydroxyl primary amines and (meth)acryloyl chloride has been developed. The chemical structures of the HPEAs were confirmed by IR and NMR spectra. Analyses of SEC (size exclusion chromatography) and viscosity characterizations revealed the highly branched structures of the polymers obtained. The resultant hyperbranched polymers contain abundant hydroxyl groups. The thermoresponsive property was obtained from in situ surface modification of abundant OH end groups with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm). The study oil temperature-dependent characteristics has revealed that NIPAAm-g-HPEA exhibits an adjustable lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of about 34-42 degrees C depending on the grafting degree. More interestingly, the work provided an interesting phenomenon where the HPEA backbones exhibited strong blue photoluminescence.

The synthesis and characterization of two new polyphenylphenyl compounds is reported. One compound (CPP) acts as a blue light-emitting material, but contains strong electron-accepting groups that form exciplexes with electron-donating arylamines that are widely used as hole-transporting materials. Inserting a layer of the other compound into the organic light-emitting diodes (see figure) suppresses the formation of exciplexes, and gives high-efficiency blue-light emission from the CPP layer.

A series of strong solid acids composed of WO3/ZrO2 were prepared. Their crystal structure, surface state, and acidity were determined by the methods of X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, temperature-programmed reduction, laser Raman, and acidity measurement. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in the tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role in stabilizing the tetragonal phase of ZrO2, and all of the samples possessed large surface areas. WO3 in WO3/ZrO2 is mainly monolayer dispersed, and a small amount crystallized on the ZrO2 surface and partly reacted with ZrO2 to form the bond of Zr-O-W, acting as the strong solid acid center. The catalytic properties of WO3/ZrO2 strong solid;acids for alkylation of isobutane with butene at different conditions were investigated. They had a better reaction performance than other strong solid acids; a parallel relationship could be drawn between the catalytic activity and the acid amounts as well as the acidic strength of the catalysts.

Their crystal structures, surface properties and acidities were determined by means of XRD, DTA-TG, H-2- TPR, Laser Raman and acidity measurements. The results revealed that ZrO2 in WO3/ZrO2 existed mainly in tetragonal phase, the addition of WO3 plays an important role to stabilize tetragonal phase of ZrO2 and thus the catalyst had a considerable surface area. In this paper, melt crystallization of poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) under strong electric field was investigated. In the crystal structure of PEEKK, the length of c axis was found to he 1.075 nm, increasing by 7% compared to that of PEEKK crystallized without strong electric field. The molecule chains might take a more extended conformation through the opening of the bridge bond angles by increasing from 124 degrees to 144 degrees under strong electric field in the crystal structure.
