A novel conducting polymer poly(phenylene sulfide-tetraaniline) (PPSTEA), with tetraaniline (TA) and phenylene sulfide (PS) segments in its repeat unit, has been synthesized through an acid-induced polycondensation reaction of 4-methylsulfinylphenyl-capped tetraaniline. The new polymer, which represents the first soluble conducting polyaniline analogue with well-defined structure, has high molecular weight, good solubility in common solvents, and good film-forming properties. Its electrical property is analogous to polyaniline. The conductivity of preliminarily, protonic-doping PPSTEA is up to 10 degrees S/cm. This synthetic strategy appears to be general for developing novel well-defined polyaniline analogue containing much longer fixed conjugation length.

The solubility of [Tris-(acetylsalicylate)-terbium] [Tb(AS)(3)] is improved to a greater extent than [Tris-(salicylate)-terbium] [Tb(Sal)(3)] following introduction of a flexible acetyl group. Th3+ binds with acetylsalicylate in solution at low pH value and the resultant Tb(AS)(3) has good solubility in chloroform. A Green EL device with the structure ITO/PVK/PVB:PBD: Tb(AS)(3)/ PBD/Al has been fabricated based on soluble Tb(AS)(3), in which Tb(AS)(3) was first used as an emissive center doped with PVK and PBD. The hole-transporting layer and the emissive layer were formed by spin coating. The device exhibited a highly pure characteristic green light of Tb3+. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. In this work some basic constants of extractant Sec-Octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-12) such as solubility (S) in water, dissociation constant (K-a) in aqueous solution, dimerization constant( K-2) and distribution constant (K-d) between water and haptane have been determined by two phase titration method. The results are as follows: S = 1.40 x 10(-4) mol/L, K-a = 3.02 x 10(-4), K-2 = 3.56 x 10(2), K-d = 4.06 x 10(2) (25 +/-0.5 degreesC).

Controlled cyclization of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) was achieved with the aid of cationic catalyst system based on diethylaluminium chloride (AIEt(2)Cl) and benzyl chloride (C6H5CH2Cl) and by working in xylene solution at high temperature (T > 100 degreesC). The main parameters of the cyclization process were investigated. Elastomers with low intrinsic viscosity, ready solubility, free gel were obtained. The products were characterized with IR H-1-NMR, DSC, GPC. The polycyclic structure was determined. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

A series of novel nitrogen- and sulfur-containing conjugated polymers have been synthesized via an acid-induced self polycondensation of functional monomers with methyl sulfinyl group. They exhibit good solubility in common solvents, such as CHCl3, THF, DMF, DMSO, et al; and thus show excellent film-forming properties. They are used as hole-transport layer (HTL) in two-layer light-emitting diodes (ITO/polymer/Alq3/Mg:Ag). The typical turn-on voltage of these diodes is about 4 similar to 5V. The maximum brightness is about 3440cd/m(2) at 20 V. The maximum efficiency is estimated to be 0.15 Im/W at 10V.

A series of high sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)s were prepared by copolymerization of sodium 5,5 ' -carbonylbis (2-fluorobenzenesulfonate)(2),4,4 ' -difluorobenzophenone (1) and bisphenol A(3) in the presence of potassium carbonate in dimethylsulfoxide. The copolymers were characterized by IR and DSC, The influence of degree of sulfonation on the properties of copolymers, such as component, thermal stability, solubility and filming ability, was studied.

Nanocrystalline Yb2O3 of various particle sizes was prepared using sol-gel method. XRD analysis shows that the prepared nanocrystalline Yb2O3 is cubic in structure with space group Ia3. TEM photographs indicate that Yb2O3 nanoparticles are basically spherical in shape. Calculation of crystallite size indicates that the average crystallite size of Yb2O3 increases with increasing calcination temperature, but the average crystal lattice distortion rate decreases with increasing calcination temperature and crystallite size. This result shows that the smaller the crystallite size, the bigger the crystal lattice distortion, and the worse crystal growth. Solubility test of Yb2O3 in nitric acid shows that the surface activity of Yb2O3 increases with decreasing crystallite size. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) spectra reveal that nanocrystalline Yb2O3 has higher surface activity; than that of ordinary Yb2O3. Absorbance intensity of Yb-O bond of nanocrystalline Yb2O3 is weaker than that of ordinary Yb2O3, and the absorbance of Yb-O bond of nanocrystalline Yb2O3 is small blue-shifted.

Novel sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s derived from 4,4'-thiodiphenol with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized by nucleophilic polycondensation of various amount of 5,5 '-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1) and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with 4,4'-thiodipheno (3). Component and structure of the polymers were confirmed by TR, NMR and elemental analysis. Wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns indicated an amorphous structure of the polymers. All the polymers showed excellent thermal stability and poor solubility in water. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new kind of monomers including aromatic spirodilactone-5, 5'-carboxy-7,7'-dioxo-2,2'-spirobi(benzo-[c]tetrahydrofuran) is synthesized from m-xylene and paraformaldehyde. It is converted to a series of polyamides and polyesters by means of low-temperature solution polycondensation and interfacial polycondensation. NMR and IR spectra, solubility, mechanical and thermal properties of all these polymers are investigated. The polymers have high glass transition temperatures and good thermal oxidative properties. All polyamides have high viscosity and good solubility in strong polar organic solvents such as DMSO, DMAc, DMF and NMP. All polyamides can be cast into transparent, flexible and tough films possessing good tensile properties.

New aromatic diamines [(1) and (2)] containing polycycloalkane structures between two benzene rings were synthesized by HCl-catalyzed condensation reaction of aniline hydrochloride and corresponding polycycloalkanone derivatives. The structures of diamines were identified by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The polyimides were synthesized from the obtained diamines with various aromatic dianhydrides by one-step polymerization in m-cresol. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polyimides were in the range of 0.34-1.02 dL/g. The polyimides showed good thermal stabilities and solubility. All the polymers were readily soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, m-cresol, tetrachloroethane, etc. Some of them were soluble even in chloroform at room temperature. The glass transition temperatures were observed in the range of 323-363 degrees C, and all of the polymers were stable up to 400 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A series of novel PPV derivative copolymers with good solubility in common organic solvents were synthesized. The emitting color of these copolymers could range from red to blue by adjusting the structures and the compositions of monomers. Investigation on their optical properties showed that the PL quantum efficiency could be increased by energy transfer and conjugation reduction. The PL quantum efficiency of most green/blue copolymer films on slide glass was higher than 80%.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. Optically active (R)-(+)-2, 2'-bis(2-trifluoro-4-aminophenoxy)-1, 1'-binaphthyl was prepared from 1, 1'-bi-2-naphthol. The optically active aromatic polyimide was also successfully synthesized. This new polymer has good solubility, thermal stability etc. Its specific rotation was found to be +174 degrees, and its chiroptical property was also studied.

2,2,'3,3' -Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,2,'3,3'-BPDA) was prepared by a coupling reaction of dimethyl 3-iodophthalate. The X-ray single-crystal structure determination showed that this dianhydride had a bent and noncopolanar structure, presenting a striking contrast to its isomer, 3,3,'4,4'-BPDA. This dianhydride was reacted with aromatic diamines in a polar aprotic solvent such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to form polyamic acid intermediates, which imidized chemically to polyimides with inherent viscosities of 0.34-0.55 dL/g, depending on the diamine used. The polyimides from 2,2,'3,3'-BPDA exhibited a good solubility and were dissolved in polar aprotic solvents and polychlorocarbons. These polyimides have high glass transition temperatures above 283 degrees C. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that these polyimides were fairly stable up to 500 degrees C, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 534-583 degrees C in nitrogen atmosphere and 537-561 degrees C in air atmosphere. The concentration of a polar solvent DMF extract was found to be very effective for the selective enrichment of endohedral metallofullerenes against empty fullerenes. As the solvent evaporated, endohedral metallofullerenes were effectively enriched in the solution, while most of empty fullerenes (especially C-60 and C-70) were precipitated because of their scant solubility in DMF. Matrix-assisted laser-desorption-ionization time-of-fligh mass spectrometry analysis indicated that the purity of endohedral metallofullerenes increased dramatically after concentration of the DMF extract solution. Upon transferring the extract into toluene, a solution containing significantly enriched endohedral metallofullerenes was obtained. The different solubilities of endohedral metallofullerenes versus empty fullerenes are considered to account for this selective enrichment of endohedral metallofullerenes.
