SbOx and SbOx/SiO2 catalysts were prepared and investigated for methane selective oxidation to HCHO. HCHO selectivity up to 41% can be obtained on Sb2O5/SiO2 catalyst at 873 K and just drop gently to 18% with temperature up to 923 K. HCHO selectivity for SbOx/SiO2 catalysts decreases gently with reaction temperature, so considerable value of HCHO selectivity can still be obtained at high temperatures.

The mono- and bimetallic catalytic polymeric hollow-fiber reactors were established with catalytic polymeric cellulose acetate (CA) hollow fibers prepared by supporting the polymer-anchored mono- or bimetallic catalyst in/on the inner wall of the hollow fibers. The selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene to cyclopentene was efficiently carried out in the above catalytic polymeric hollow-fiber reactors, especially in the NaBH4 reduced bimetallic PVP-Pd-0.5Co/CA hollow-fiber reactor under mild conditions of 40 degrees C and 0.1 MPa. It was found that there was a remarkable synergic effect of palladium and cobalt reduced by NaBH4 in the bimetallic PVP-Pd-0.5Co/CA hollow-fiber reactor, which results in a 97.5% conversion of cyclopentadiene and a 98.4% selectivity for cyclopentene. Selective extraction of Mercury(II) using 1-naphthylthiourea-methyl isobutyl ketone (ANTU-MIBK) system from hydrochloric acid solutions (0.1-10 M) has been studied. Influence of foreign ions, acid and ligand concentrations has been investigated. Addition of ANTU in MIBK enhanced, extraction capacity of MIBK to several times. Low effect of foreign ions and high separation factors for a number of metal ions determined at 0.5 M hydrochloric acid concentration evaluated the proposed method efficient and selective. The experimental data obtained from application of the method for extraction of mercury from a synthetic aqueous solution reveal that more than 99% mercury can be separated from cadmium, zinc and selenium in a single step with five minutes equilibration

PVC based membranes of a double armed crown ether, N, N'-dibenzyl, 1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7, 16-diaza cyclooctadecane (I) as ionophore with sodium tetra phenyl borate (NaTPB) as anion excluder and with many plasticizing solvent mediators have been prepared and used for Hg(II) ion determination. The membrane with DBBP (dibutyl butyl phosphonate ) as plasticizer with various ingredients in the ratio PVC: I: NaTPB: DBBP (150: 12: 2: 100) shows the best results in terms of working concentration range (3.1x10-5-1.0x10-tM) with a Nernstian slope (29.0′0.5 mV/decade of activity). The electrode works in the pH range 2.1-4.5. The response time of the sensor is 15s and it can be used for about 4 months in aqueous as well as in non-aqueous medium. It has good stability and reproducibility. The potentiometric selectivity coefficient values for mono-, di-, and trivalent cations are tabulated. The sensor is highly selective for Hg2+ in the presence of normal interferents like cadmium, silver, sodium and iron.

A novel tetraaza macrocyclic Schiff base ligand, 6,13-dinitro-5,7,12,14-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-1,5,7,-12-tetraene, was prepared and its copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes were characterized. This ligand was found to be an excellent extractant for copper(II).

It is shown that near-Nernstian calibration slopes can be obtained with a Cu1.8Se electrode in a range of cupric ion buffers in spite of a high chloride content. Best results are obtained with the ligands ethylenediamine, glycine and histidine. The onset of cupric ion toxicity towards marine organisms falls within the pCu calibration range obtained with glycine, and the Cu1.8Se electrode could, therefore, be useful for monitoring cupric ion activity in bioassays in sea-water media.

Nanoporous VSB-5 nickel phosphate molecular sieves with relatively well controllable sizes and morphology of microspheres assembled from nanorods were synthesized at 140 degrees C over a short time in the presence of hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) by a facile hydrothermal method. The pH value, reaction time, and ratio of HMT to NaHPO2-H2O crucially influence the morphology and quality of the final products.

For the first time, we report a sensitive and selective method to detect Cu2+ based on the electrochemiluminescence quenching of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous solution. The mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) protected CdTe QDs were prepared and characterized with UV, fluorescence and ECL. The anodic ECL quenching mechanism was attributed to the fact that MSA capping was removed from the surface of the CdTe QDs and preferentially bound with Cu2+. The displacement of MSA capping layer created imperfections on the CdTe QDs surface, and eventually led to the ECL quenching.

We have studied the self-assembly of the ABA triblock copolymer (P4VP-b-PS-b-P4VP) in dilute solution by using binary block-selective solvents, that is, water and methanol. The triblock copolymer was first dissolved in dioxane to form a homogeneous solution. Subsequently, a given volume of selective solvent was added slowly to the solution to induce self-assembly of the copolymer. It was found that the copolymer (P4VP(43)-b-PS366-b-P4VP(43)) tended to form spherical aggregate or bilayer structure when we used methanol or water as the single selective solvent, respectively.

Due to the potentially adverse effects of the chromium (VI) on the human health and also on the environment, the quantitative determination of Cr(VI) is of particular interest. This work herein reports a facile, selective and rapid colorimetric determination of Cr(VI) based on the peroxidase substrate-2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) as the color developing agent. ABTS, which was usually acted as peroxidase substrate for the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, is used here for the first time to fabricate the "signal-on" colorimetric Assay for Cr(VI).

Rhombohedral-calcite and hexagonal-vaterite types of LuBO:Eu3+ microparticles with various complex self-assembled 3D architectures have been prepared selectively by an efficient surfactant- and template-free hydrothermal process for the first time. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, photoluminescence, and cathodoluminescence spectra as well as kinetic decays were used to characterize the samples.
