The glass transition temperatures (T-g) of PS/PPO blends with different compositions were studied under various pressures by means of a PVT-100 analyzer. A general relation of T-g and pressure of the PS/PPO system was deduced by fitting the experimental T-g's. Couchman volume-based equation was testified with the aid of those data. It was found that the experimental T-g's do not obey the Couchman equation of glass transition temperature based on thermodynamic theory. According to our studies, the major reason of the deviation is caused by the neglect of DeltaV(mix). (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O=CH2](+) and the 1-hydroxyethyl ion [CH3CH=OH](+) generated under the self-chemical-ionization (self-CI) conditions of alkyl methyl ethers and primary alcohols were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct ions [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecules [C60H](+) were observed as the major products of C-60 with the plasma of alkyl methyl ethers. On the contrary, the reactions of C-60 With the plasmas of primary alcohols produced few corresponding adduct ions. The AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations were carried out on 14 possible structures. The calculated results showed that the most stable structure among the possible isomers of [C60C2H5O](+) is the [3+2] cycloadduct. According to experimental and theoretical results, the pathway for the formation of the adduct was presented.

It is reported that two kinds of specific mass spectrometric fragmentations are generated from dissociations of the intermediates of both the ion-neutral complex and the proton-bound complex. Collision-induced dissociation, isotopic labelling, and semi-empirical AM1 calculations were used to investigate the formation mechanism of the ion of m/z 139 from ionized tetrahydroimidazole-substituted methylene beta-diketones and the unimolecular fragmentations pathway of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol upon electron impact.

Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the ion systems generated from the self-chemical ionization of alkyl methyl ethers (CH3OR, R = n-C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9) were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecule [C60H](+) were observed as the major products. The former adduct ion was produced by the reactions of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3OCH2](+), and the latter resulted from the proton transfer reactions from protonated alkyl methyl ethers to C-60 It is suggested that the [3+2] cycloadduct to a 6-6 bond of C-60 (a C-C bond common to two annulated six-membered rings) is the most favorable structure among the probable isomers of [C60C2H5O](+). The fundamental aspects of ion/neutral complex as an important intermediate of unimolecular fragmentation in mass spectrometry have been summarized in this review, especially for the classified description of its formations, characteristics, reactions, investigation methods, recent achievements and application. Meanwhile, another kind of proton-bound complex, which is a special type of ion/neutral complex, has been also introduced briefly. Among them, a part of authors' work was included.

The fragmentations of three bifunctional phenylether compounds including 2-(2, 6-dichloro)phenoxyl propionitrile, N-hydroxyl-4-butoxyl phenylacetyl amine(bufexamc) and 2-(1-methylethoxyl) phenol methylcarbamate (Propoxur) under electron impact ionization were reported, Metastable ion(MI) and collision-induced dissociation(CID) at a low energy have been used to study the fragmentation pathways from molecular ions. Apart from the simple bond cleavages, and the unimolecular dissociations via ion/neutral complex intermediate as a competitive mechanism were demonstrated, Moreover, the intramolecular hydrogen transfer and double hydrogen transfers in the fragmentations of these compounds were discussed in detail.

The dissociation of gaseous metastable ions of m/z 153 and the formation of ions of m/z 139 from the unimolecular fragmentations of ionized tetrahydroimidazole-substituted methylene beta-diketones were examined by tandem mass spectrometry. In addition, some other fragments accompanying the elimination of either an H2O molecule or an CHO. radical were also observed in the collision-induced dissociation spectra of molecular ions of the compounds bearing an aromatic ring. Collision-induced dissociation and isotopic labeling showed that these processes may involve reactions of intermediate ion/neutral complexes and multistep rearrangements. The corresponding mechanisms are discussed. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A new equation of state for polymer solids is given by P = B0/4 98[(V0/V)7.14 - (V0/V)2.16 + T/T0] comparison of the equation of state with experimental data is made for six kinds of polymers at different temperatures and pressures. The results obtained shown that the equation is suitable to describe the compression behavior of solid polymers in the region without transition.

The transfer of H+, Li+, Na+, Zn2+, Mg2+ and Cu2+ facilitated by ionophore ETH 129 (N, N, N', N'-tetracyolohexyl-3-oxapentanediamide) across water/nitrobenzene interface has been studied by the cyclic voltammetry. The mechanism of the transfer process has been discussed. The diffusion coefficients and the stability constants of the complexes formed in the nitrobenzene phase have been determined.

The reaction of EuCl3, AlCl3 and C6Me6 in toluene gives the Eu(II) complex [Eu(eta-6-C6Me6)(AlCl4)2]4; X-ray crystal determination shows the molecule to be a cyclotetramer, in which the four Eu(C6Me6)AlCl4 units are connected via four groups of eta-2-AlCl4.

A new isothermal equation of state for polymers in the solid and the liquid is given by P = B(T, 0)/(n - m){[V(T, 0)/V(T, P)]n + 1 - [V(T, 0)/V(T, P)]m + 1} where n = 6.14 and m = 1.16 are general constant's for polymer systems. Comparison of the equation with experimental data is made for six polymers at different temperatures and pressures. The results predict that the equation of state describes the isothermal compression behaviour of polymers in the glass and the melt states, except at the transition temperature.

The values of k and alpha in the Mark-Houwink equation have been determined for chitosans with different degrees of deacetylation (DD) (69, 84, 91 and 100% respectively), in 0.2 M CH3COOH/0.1 M CH3COONa aqueous solution at 30-degrees-C by the light scattering method. It was shown that the values of alpha-decreased from 1.12 to 0.81 and the values of k increased from 0.104 x 10(-3) to 16.80 x 10(-3) ml/g, when the DD varied from 69 to 100%. This is due to a reduction of rigidity of the molecular chain and an increase of the electrostatic repulsion force of the ionic groups along the polyelectrolyte chain in chitosan solution, when the DD of chitosan increases gradually.

The relationship between the alpha-N index and physical properties of neutral phosphorus extractants is studied. Using the general alpha-N index which could describe extractants with minute difference in structure, the good correlation between it and various physical properties of the neutral phosphorus extractants (e.g., densities, refractive index, shift ratio of paper chromatography and IR frequencies of bond P = O) is obtained. The result indicates that general alpha-N index is a good topological index of organic compounds.
