The interfacial behavior of sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-100) at various diluents/(H, Na)Cl interfaces was examined using the Du Nouy ring method. Different adsorption isotherms such as the Gibbs and Szyszkowski were in good agreement with the experimental data. The values of interfacial excess at saturated interface increase in the following order: n-heptane > kerosene > cyclohexane > CCl4 > toluene > benzene > chloroform. The effects of temperature, acidity, and ionic strength of the aqueous phase on the interfacial activity of CA- 100 were also examined. The interfacial-activity data were used to discuss the mechanism and kinetics of yttrium (Y) extraction.

In this paper, a novel monoaza-B15C5 derivative, N-(2-tosylamino)-isopentyl-monoaza-15-crown-5 (L), is used as an ionophore to facilitate alkali metal cations transfer across a water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interface. Well-defined voltammetric behaviors are observed at the polarized W/DCE interfaces supported at micro- and nano-pipets except Cs+. The diffusion coefficient of this ionophore in the DCE phase is calculated to be equal to (3.3+/-0.2) x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). The experimental results indicate that a 1:1 (metal: ionophore) complex is formed at the interface with a TIC/TID mechanism. The selectivity of this ionophore towards alkali ions follows the sequence Na+ > Li+ > K+ > Rb+ > Cs+. The logarithm of the association constants (log beta(1)(0)) of the LiL+, NaL+, KL+ and RbL+ complexes in the DCE phase are calculated to be 10.6, 11.6, 9.0 and 7.1, respectively. The kinetic parameters are determined by steady-state voltammograms using nanopipets. The standard rate constants (k(0)) for Li+, Na+, K+ and Rb+ transfers facilitated by L are 0.54+/-0.05, 0.63+/-0.09, 0.51+/-0.04 and 0.46+/-0.06 cm s(-1), respectively. The pH values of aqueous solution have little effect on the electrochemical behaviors of these facilitated processes. The results predicate that this new type of ionophore might be useful to fabricate electrochemical sensor of sodium ion.

The transfer of sodium and potassium ions facilitated by dibenzo-15-crown-5 (DB15C5) has been studied at the micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (water/DCE) interface supported at the tip of a micropipette. Cyclic volt-ammetric measurements were performed in two limiting conditions: the bulk concentration of Na+ or K+ in the aqueous phase is much higher than that of DB15C5 in the organic phase (DB15C5 diffusion controlled process) and the reverse condition (metal ion diffusion controlled process). The mechanisms of the facilitated Na+ transfer by DB15C5 are both transfer by interfacial complexation (TIC) with 1 : 1 stoichiometry under these two conditions, and the corresponding association constants were determined at log beta(1) = 8.97 +/- 0.05 or log beta(1) = 8.63 +/- 0.03. However, the transfers of K+ facilitated by DB15C5 show different behavior. In the former case it is a TIC process and its stoichiometry is 1 : 2, whereas in the latter case two peaks during the forward scan were observed, the first of which was confirmed as the formation of K (DB15C5)(2) at the interface by a TIC mechanism, while the second one may be another TIC process with 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the more positive potential. The relevant association constants calculated for the complexed ion, K+(DB15C5)(2), in the organic phase in two cases, logbeta(2), are 13.64 +/- 0.03 and 11.34 +/- 0.24, respectively.

The lipid layer membranes were fabricated on the glassy carbon electrode (GC) and demonstrated to be bilayer lipid membranes by impedance spectroscopy. The formation of incorporated poly L-glutamate bilayer lipid membrane was achieved. The ion channel behavior of the incorporated poly L-glutamate membrane was determined. When the stimulus calcium cations were added into the electrolyte, the ion channel was opened immediately and exhibited distinct channel current. Otherwise, the ion channel was closed. The cyclic voltammogram at the GC electrode coated with incorporated poly L-glutamate DMPC film response to calcium ion is very fast compared with that at the GC electrode coated only with DMPC film. Ion channel current is not dependent on the time but on the concentration of calcium. The mechanism of the ion channel formation was investigated.

Photoluminescence characteristics and the energy transfer between Gd3+ and Eu2+ in BaLiF3,, matrix have been investigated. A series of concentrations of Gd3+ ion with a fixed Eu2+ concentration doped in BaLiF3 : Gd3+, Eu2+ has been studied. When the doping concentration for Gd3+ was 0.3%,, the system reached the highest energy transfer efficiency. Due to the competitive absorption for the Gd3+ and the Eu2+ ions in BaLiF3 : Gd3+ : Eu2+, when the doping concentration for Gd3+ ion exceeded 0.3 Vo, the continuously increasing concentration of Gd3+ ions caused the competitive absorption ratio for Gd3+ increasing and the emission intensity of Eu2+ decreasing. The energy transfer processes were discussed, while the transfer probability was calculated to be 1.35 X 10(5) s(-1).

Studies of the extraction kinetics of cerium(IV) from H2SO4-HF solutions with Cyanex 923 in n-heptane have been carried out using a constant interfacial area cell with laminar flow. The experimental hydrodynamic conditions were chosen so that the contribution of diffusion to the measured rate of reaction was minimized. The data were analyzed in terms of pseudo-first order constants. The results were compared with those of the system without HF. It was concluded that the addition of HF reduces the activation energy for the forward rate from 46.2 to 36.5 U mol(-1) while it has an opposite effect on the activation energy for the reverse process(the activation energy increased from 23.3 to 90.8 U mol(-1)). Thus, HF can accelerate the rate of cerium(IV) extraction. At the same time, the extraction rate is controlled by a mixed chemical reaction-diffusion rather than by a chemical reaction alone. A rate equation has also been obtained.

Heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) and diffusion coefficients (D) of the ferrocene and its derivatives. in a new synthetic comb polymer solvent, poly(dimethylsiloxane-g-monomethylether polyethylene glycol) (SCP), and several other polymer solvents were estimated by using microelectrodes. Also, the influence of various supporting electrolytes on k(s) and D of ferrocene was studied. It was shown that k(s) and D of ferrocene decreased with increasing anionic size of the supporting electrolyte, but k(s) tended to increase with increasing radius of the solvated cation. Also, the cationic size of the supporting electrolytes had little effects on D. The values of k(s) and D for the ferrocene derivatives in the polymer solvents were in sharp contrast to those in monomeric solvents. Thus. the k(s) values were proportional to D in the polymer solvents. which indicates that solvent dynamics control of the electrode reaction. The values of k(s) and D of ferrocene in SCP were larger than those in other polymer solvents indicating that SCP is a good polymer solvent. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the plasma generated from methyl acrylate under self-chemical ionization conditions were studied by use of a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C3H3O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major product ions. The former adduct ion is formed by electrophilic reaction of C-60 with the ion [CH2=CHCO](+), a main fragment ion resulting from the methyl acrylate molecular ion [CH2=CHCOOCH3](+) through alpha cleavage. The latter ion is generated by proton transfer from protonated methyl acrylate to C-60. Semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations have been performed for the eight possible isomers of [C60C3H3O](+) at the Hartree-Fock level by use of the AMI method. The results show three types of cycloadducts as the most stable structures among the possible isomers.

The ion-molecule reactions of disubstituted benzenes under chemical ionization conditions with acetyl chloride as reagent gas were examined, and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions (mostly proton and acetyl ion adducts) were studied by collision-induced dissociation. Electron-releasing substituents favored the adduct reactions, and electron-withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituting groups had an effect on the relative abundances of the adduct ions. Several examples of the ortho effect were observed. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ions formed by ortho-benzenediamine with the acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amines in the condensed phase. In this work, we report the reverse electron transfer reaction between TCNQ in 1, 2-dichloroethane (DCE) and ferrocyanide in water. This process is a thermodynamic unfavorable reaction and the reverse electron transfer reaction can only be obtained by scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM) in the presence of suitable potential-determining ions, which govern the interfacial potential difference. In our case, the potential determining ions are tetrabutylammonium ion(TBA(+)) and tetraphenylarsonium ion (TPAs+). The effects of the concentrations of TBA(+) and TPAs+ in two phases and other parameters have been studied in detail. The apparent heterogeneous rate constants(k(i)) were obtained under different values of K-p(K-p=c(i)(w)/c(i)(o)) for both cases by fitting the SECM approach curves with theoretical ones and the results showed that they were controlled by the interfacial potential differences. The relationship between apparent heterogeneous rate constants and the interfacial potential differences obeys Butler-Volmer theory.

Energy transfer processes between Eu2+ and Gd3+, Cr3+, Ce3+ ions in KMgF3, which are difficult to study spectroscopically, have been investigated by using the proposed four-level decay model of the P-6(7/2) excited state of the Eu2+ ion. Gd3+ and Ce3+ transfer its energy to the vibronic transition of the P-6(7/2) --> S-8(7/2) transition of Eu2+, whereas Cr3+ receive energy from Eu2+ via the d-d interaction. The energy transfer from the Eu2+ 4f(6)5d level to the Ce3+ 4f5d state is observed spectroscopically, and the energy transfer mechanism is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Ultrasonic absorption coefficients for ethylamine in heavy water (D2O) and in light water (H2O) have been measured in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz at 25 degrees C. A single relaxational process has been observed in these two kinds of solutions. From the concentration dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters, and following the reaction mechanism proposed by Eigen et al. for ethylamine in H2O, the causes of the relaxations have been attributed to a perturbation of an equilibrium associated with a deuteron or proton transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been estimated from deuterioxide or hydroxide ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency, and the kinetic isotope effects have been determined. In addition, the standard volume changes of the reactions have been calculated from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength, and the adiabatic compressibility has also been determined from the density and sound velocity for ethylamine in D2O and in H2O, respectively. These results are compared with those for propylamine and butylamine and are discussed in relation to the different kinetic properties between D2O and H2O, the reaction radii derived by Debye theory, and the structural properties of the reaction intermediate.

The luminescence of Ce3+ and Ce3+, Mn2+ co-doped BaB8O13 and SrB4O7 prepared in air is studied. The results show that tetravalent cerium ion can he reduced to trivalent state in the hosts and gives rise to efficient luminescence. Energy transfer between Ce3+ and Mn2+ is possible. Mn2+ ions can be efficiently sensitized by Ce3+ and exhibit green and red emissions which implied that Mn2+ occupied the crystallographic sites of cations and boron sites of the anoins, respectively. The intensity ratio of red to Been emission in matrix increases with the increasing of manganese concentration.
