An investigation of electrode oxidation processes of (tetra-phenylporphinato) manganese (III) Perchlorate, (TPS)Mn(III)ClO4, was carried out during the titration of chloride anions by conventional cyclic voltammetry, thin-layer cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. It was demonstrated that in the presence of one equivalent amount of Cl-, the first one electron oxidation reaction corresponds to the Mn(III)I cation radical oxidation, and the second one electron oxidation corresponds to the cation radical/dication generation followed by an iso-porphyrin formation reaction, however in the presence of two equivalent amount of Cl-, the first one electron oxidation of Mn(III) gives Mn(IV) porphyrin and the second one electron oxidation generates cation radicals of Mn(IV) followed by an iso-porphyrin formation reactions. Mechanisms of these redox processes are postulated.

The electrocatalytic reduction of 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane with CoTPP in DMF solutions containing 0.1 M TBAP was investigated at a Pt ultramicroelectrode. The experimental results indicated that CoTPP obviously exhibited catalytic activity for 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane. The rate constants of 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane in this system were calculated to be 0.14 x 10(3) and 0.5 x 10(2) M-1 S-1, respectively. The reaction mechanism of 1,2-dibromoethane and tetrabromoethane reduction electrocatalysed by CoTPP in 0.1 M TBAP DMF solution is discussed.

Infrared spectroscopy was used to study the structural phase, transitions of laurylammonium chloride in the temperature range from 290 to 365K. It was shown that there is a solid-solid phase transition at 339 K with a pre-transition at 327 K. The infrared spectra indicated that virgin crystals at room temperature form a well-ordered phase with all-trans hydrocarbon chains, and the lengths of N-H...Cl hydrogen bonds are different. The spectra suggested that the gauche conformers begin to appear at temperature above 327 K. The spectra at high temperature over 339 K demonstrated that the interaction between the chains decreases, the partial ''melting'' of the chains is obvious, and the hydrogen bonds (N-H...Cl) have the same lengths. The main transition and pre-transition are mainly assigned to the intramolecular and intermolecular order-disorder changes, respectively.

In this work the radiation-induced structural changes in PVDF were studied using XPS. It was found that for PVDF irradiated at 150-degrees-C, double bonds were formed mainly through the further dehydrofluorination of crosslinked and/or branched molecules, whereas for samples irradiated at 20-degrees-C the dehydrofluorination of macromolecular radicals to form stable polyene radicals is the main source of unsaturated structures.

The crystal structure of the title compound has been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z=2. Lattice parameters are: a = 0.7296(1), b = 1.0110(3), c = 1.2814(4) nm; alpha = 90.84(2), beta = 101.17(2), gamma = 92.52(2)-degrees. Intensity data were collected on a Nicolet R3M/E four-circle diffractometer using MoK alpha (lambda = 0.071073 nm) radiation. The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier techniques and refined by least-squares techniques to R = 0.065. The structure of the complex consists of tetrahedral ZnCl42- anions which form a two-dimensional sheets. Tetrahedral ZnCl42- anions are sandwiched between two hydrocarbon layers which consist of [NH3(CH2)10NH3]2+ cations. Each [NH3(CH2)10NH3]2+ group is in a gauche bond between C atoms near NH3 polar heads.

Poly(2-acrylamido-hexadecylsulfonic acid) (PAMC16S) forms a stable monolayer on a pure water surface. More closely packed monolayers can be obtained when the subphase contains Cd2+ or Ca2+. Self-assembled monolayers have been formed on gold surfaces and characterized by contact angle measurement, XPS and electrochemical analysis. The results show that the monolayers are hydrophobic with the hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups adjacent to the metal surfaces and with the hydrocarbon chains extended from the surfaces. The monolayers exhibit great adsorption stability during the faradaic reactions, illustrating the advantage of polymeric LB films in potential applications.

The thermal oxidation behaviour of polypropylene containing tetramethylpiperidine compounds and corresponding pentamethylpiperidine compounds are compared using air oven aging, oxygen uptake and thermogravimetry. Carbonyl formation, the induction period of oxygen absorption and weight loss have been selected to characterize the degree of oxidation. The results show that the stabilizing effectiveness of pentamethylpiperidines is always higher than that of tetramethyl types. Radical-trapping mechanisms cannot explain this, because large amounts of nitroxyl radicals are formed by the tetramethylpiperidine compounds. The quenching of singlet oxygen appears to be involved in thermal oxidation of polypropylene containing pentamethylpiperidine compounds. Specific hydrogen bonding between pentamethylpiperidines and hydroperoxide may account for their better thermal stabilizing action than tetramethylpiperidines.

The low-frequency Raman spectrum of n-decylammonium chloride was measured as a function of temperature in the temperature range from 290 to 340K, and the longitudinal acoustical mode vibration band was assigned. The results showed that there are two phase transitions at 313K and 321K, respectively. The phase transition at 313K is mainly induced by change of hydrocarbon chain conformations, while that at 321K is mainly induced by change of order degree of molecular packing. The results suggest low-frequency Raman spectroscopy is a useful probe of structural phase transition for long-chain compounds.

The thermodynamics of micellization for polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene/propylene) two-Mock copolymer(SEP) in the mixtures of n-octane and benzene with different proportions have been studied in this paper, The critical micelle concentrations(GMC) of micelle solutions at various temperatures were measured by lost angle laser light scattering photometer(LALLS), The results shove that the micellization process of nonpolar copolymer SEP in hydrocarbon solvents ire exothermal, and the entropy change is negative, In contrast, far ordinary surfactants in water, it is the enthalpy contribution to the energy change which is responsible for micellization.

Fatty acid desaturases are enzymes that introduce double bonds into the hydrocarbon chains of fatty acids. The fatty acid desaturases from 37 cyanobacterial genomes were identified and classified based upon their conserved histidine-rich motifs and phylogenetic analysis, which help to determine the amounts and distributions of desaturases in cyanobacterial species. The filamentous or N-2-fixing cyanobacteria usually possess more types of fatty acid desaturases than that of unicellular species. The pathway of acyl-lipid desaturation for unicellular marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus differs from that of other cyanobacteria, indicating different phylogenetic histories of the two genera from other cyanobacteria isolated from freshwater, soil, or symbiont. Strain Gloeobacter violaceus PCC 7421 was isolated from calcareous rock and lacks thylakoid membranes. The types and amounts of desaturases of this strain are distinct to those of other cyanobacteria, reflecting the earliest divergence of it from the cyanobacterial line. Three thermophilic unicellular strains, Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1 and two Synechococcus Yellowstone species, lack highly unsaturated fatty acids in lipids and contain only one Delta 9 desaturase in contrast with mesophilic strains, which is probably due to their thermic habitats. Thus, the amounts and types of fatty acid desaturases are various among different cyanobacterial species, which may result from the adaption to environments in evolution. To express and product a fluorescent antioxidant holo-alpha-phycocyanin (PC) of Spirulina platensis (Sp) with His-tag (rHHPC; recombinant holo-alpha-phycocyaninof Spirulina platensis with His-tag) in 5-l bench scale. A vector harbouring two cassettes was constructed: cpcA along with cpcE-cpcF in one cassette; ho1-pcyA in the other cassette. Lyases CpcE/F of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 (S6) could catalyse the 82 site Cys in apo-alpha-PC of Sp linking with bilin chromophores, and rHHPC was biosynthesized in Escherichia coli BL21. The constant feeding mode was adopted, and transformant reached the biomass of rHHPC up to 0.55 g l(-1) broth in 5-litre bench scale. rHHPC was purified by Ni2+ affinity column conveniently. The absorbance and the fluorescence emission spectra of rHHPC had lambda(max) at 621 and 650 nm, respectively. The IC50 values of rHHPC were 277.5 +/- 25.8 mu g ml(-1) against hydroxyl radicals and 20.8 +/- 2.2 mu g ml(-1) against peroxyl radicals. Combinational biosynthesis of rHHPC was feasible, and the constant feeding mode was adopted to produce good yields of rHHPC. Fluorescent rHHPC with several unique qualitative and quantitative features was effective on scavenging hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals. A potent antioxidant rHHPC was co-expressed, produced and characterized for nutritional and pharmacological values, which would help to develop phycobiliproteins' applications in their fluorescent and biological activities.

Various quaternized chitosans (QCSs) were synthesized according to previous method. Their reducing power and antioxidant potency against hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were explored by the established systems in vitro. The QCSs exhibited markedly antioxidant activity, especially TCEDMCS, whose IC50 on hydroxyl radicals was 0.235 mg/mL. They showed 65-80% scavenging effect on hydrogen peroxide at a dose of 0.5 mg/mL. Generally, the antioxidant activity decreased in the order TCEDMCS > TBEDMCS > EDMCS > PDMCS > IBDMCS > Chitosan. Furthermore, the order of their (OH)-O-center dot and H2O2 scavenging activity was consistent with the electronegativity of different substituted groups in the QCSs. The QCSs showed much stronger antioxidant activity than that of chitosan may be due to the positive charge density of the nitrogen atoms in QCSs strengthened by the substituted groups. APC (allophycocyanin) is widely used for fluorescence tagging and may be a promising antioxidant agent for use within the food and pharmaceutical industries. Chromophore attachment to apo-ApcA (apo-APC alpha-subunit without chromophore) can be auto-catalysed both in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, a plasmid containing genes of apo-ApcA and chromophore synthetases (HOI (ferredoxin-dependent haem oxygenase) and PcyA (phycocyanobilin:ferredoxin oxidoreductase)] was constructed and expressed in Escherichia coli. The results show that holo-ApcA (APC alpha-subunit with chromophore) can be synthesized by autocatalysis in E. coli. Recombinant holo-ApcA showed the same spectral and fluorescent properties as PC (phycocyanin) and could serve as a good substitute for native PC for fluorescent tagging. Moreover, recombinant ApcA can inhibit hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals more strongly than holo-ApcA and native APC. The EC50 values were 296.4 +/- 22.4 mu g/ml against hydroxyl radicals and 38.5 +/- 2.6 mu g/ml against peroxyl radicals.

Currently, antioxidants are added in the human diet to prevent free radical-induced cell damage, and there has been an explosive interest in the use of antioxidant nutritional supplements. The effects of different factors on the antioxidant activity of phycocyanins (PCs) were studied. The results showed that PCs generated hydroxyl radicals in the light, while scavenging them in the dark. When PCs were denatured by sodium dodecyl sulfate, urea and in alkaline condition, their ability to generate hydroxyl radicals disappeared and that of scavenging them greatly increased. This showed that the phycobilin moiety is the main part of PC involved in scavenging hydroxyl radicals. Trypsin hydrolysis of PCs showed that the apoprotein portion of the molecule also made a significant contribution to the antioxidant activity.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1) is an enzyme that protects against oxidative stress from superoxide radicals in living cells. This enzyme had been isolated, purified and partially characterized from muscle tissue of the shrimp Macrobrachium nipponense. The purification was achieved by heat treatment, ammonium sulfate fractionated precipitation and column chromatograph on DEAE-cellulose 32. Some physiological and biochemical characterization of it was tested. The molecular weight of it was about 21.7 kDa, as judged by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The purified enzyme had an absorption peak of 278 nm in ultraviolet region, and the enzyme remained stable at 25-45 degreesC within 90 min. However, it was rapidly inactivated at higher temperature. Treatment of the enzyme with 1 mM ZnCl2, SDS and 1 mM or 10 mM mercaptoethanol showed some increasing activity. However, the enzyme activity was obviously inhibited by 10 mM CaCl2, CuSO4, ZnCl2 and 1 mM CaCl2 and 10 mM K2Cr2O7. SOD activity did not show significantly variation after incubated with 1 mM CaCl2, EDTA and 10 MM SDS. The enzyme was insensitive to cyanide and contained 1.03 +/- 0.14 atoms of manganese per subunit shown in atomic absorption spectroscopy, which revealed that purified SOD was Mn superoxide dismutase.
