MCM-41-hosted fluorescein mesophase was prepared by addition of the dye into the sol-gel mixture for the synthesis of MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve under microwave radiation. The as-synthesized organo-silica-surfactant material possessed hexagonal mesostructure with short-range symmetry and a uniform nanosize of about 30 nm. Furthermore, fluorescence spectrum, increase in lifetime and lack of aggregation at high concentration were discussed in terms of the effect of the host-guest interaction on these properties. In-situ synthesis of terbium complex with salicylic acid (Sal) in silica matrix was made by a two-step sol-gel process. The terbium complex with salicylic acid was formed in sol-gel derived silica gel, and confirmed by the luminescence excitation spectra and infrared(IR) spectra. As compared to the pure terbium complex powder, the silica gel containing terbium complex exhibits its characteristic emission and presents a longer fluorescence lifetime than that for the pure complex. The luminescence properties of the complex containing;silica gel were investigated and compared with that of both terbium doped the silica gel and thp pure complex powder. The reasons leading to the above results were also discussed.

In-situ synthesis of europium and terbium complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in silica matrix by a two-step sol-gel process has been proposed. The formation of europium and terbium complexes with phen in sol-gel derived silica gel were confirmed by the luminescence excitation spectra. The silica gels that contain in-situ synthesized europium and terbium complex exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the rare earth ions. Furthermore. the rare earth ions present longer fluorescence lifetimes than the comparable pure complex powder and the complexes dissolved in ethanol solutions. The luminescence properties of the silica gels codoped with europium (or terbium) and phen were also investigated with respect to the gels doped with europium (or terbium). A novel method of synthesizing protein chiral stationary phase (protein-CSP) is proposed with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine as the activator. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) based chiral columns (150x4.6 mm I.D.) were prepared successfully within 8 h. With tryptophan as the probe solute, it was observed that the BSA immobilized by this method had a better ability to distinguish enantiomers than that activated by glutaric dialdehyde. This may be due to the well-maintained BSA conformation and the larger amount of BSA immobilized on the silica gel. The BSA-CSP prepared by this method was relatively stable under experimental conditions, and the resolution of 13 chiral compounds was achieved. The coupling reaction in this method is mild, reliable and reproducible; it is also suitable for the immobilization of various biopolymers in the preparation of bioreactor, biosensor and affinity chromatography columns. In this study, amorphous silica-alumina nanomaterials with narrow mesoporous distribution can be obtained by two novel sol-gel processes, without the use of any templates. The results of our experiments show that the preparation method has a great influence on the precursor sol structure as well as the specific surface area and mesopore volume of the final product, but has no effect on the pore size distribution.

A novel sol-gel process has been developed for the synthesis of amorphous silica-aluminas with controlled mesopore distribution without the use of organic templating agents, e.g., surfactant molecules. Ultrasonic treatment during the synthesis enables production of precursor sols with narrow particle size distribution. Atomic force microscopy analysis shows that these sol particles are spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution (i.e., 13-25 nm) and their aggregation during the gelation creates clusters containing similar sized interparticle mesopores. A nitrogen physiadsorption study indicates that the mesoporous materials containing different Si/Al ratios prepared by the new synthesis method has a large specific surface area (i.e., 587-692 m(2)/g) and similar pore sizes of 2-11 nm. Solid-state Al-27 magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR shows that most of the aluminum is located in the tetrahedral position. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows that the mesoporous silica-alumina consists of 12-25 nm spheres. Additionally, high-resolution TEM and electron diffraction indicate that some nanoparticles are characteristic of a crystal, although X-ray diffraction and Si-29 MAS NMR analysis show an amorphous material.

Mesoporous spinel membranes as ultrafiltration membranes were prepared through a novel sol-gel technique. By in situ modification of the sol particle surface during the sol-gel process, control of the material structure on a nanometer scale from the earliest stages of processing was realized. Nano-particles with a chocolate-nut-like morphology, i.e. spinel MgAl2O4 as a shell and gamma -Al2O3 as a core, were first revealed by HRTEM results. The formation of the spinel phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). N-2 adsorption-desorption results showed that the mesoporous membranes had a narrow pore size distribution. This article reported the NaA zeolite membranes with high permeance synthesized with microwave heating method under different conditions: (1) on a macroporous substrate in gel, (11) on a mesoporous/macroporous (top-mesoporous-layer-modified macroporous) substrate in gel, and (111) on a mesoporous/macroporous substrate in sol. In general, the H-2 permeance of the NaA membranes by microwave heating in gel was usually at the level of 10(-6) mol s(-1) m(-2) Pa-1, much higher than that by the conventional hydrothermal synthesis. At similar H-2/C3H8 permselectivity. On the substrate modified mesoporous top layer, the H-2 permeance of the NaA membranes by microwave heating in gel or sol was further enhanced, while maintaining comparable H-2/C3H8 permselectivity, due to the prevention of penetration of the reagent into the pores of the macroporous substrate. Meanwhile, the synthesis took less time in sol than in gel on the mesoporous/macroporous substrate. The NaA membranes synthesized in sol had larger permeance than those in gel and underwent transformation in shorter time. The permeation of C3H8 suggested that there existed unwanted intercrystalline pores or defects in the membranes. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Iron-substituted SBA-15 (Fe-SBA-15) materials have been synthesized via a simple direct hydrothermal method under weak acidic conditions. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), NZ sorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations show that the resultant materials have well-ordered hexagonal meso-structures. The diffused reflectance UV-vis and UV resonance Raman spectroscopy characterizations show that most of the iron ions exist as isolated framework species for calcined materials when the Fe/Si molar ratios are below 0.01 in the gel. The presence of iron species also has significant salt effects that can greatly improve the ordering of the mesoporous structure. Different iron species including isolated framework iron species, extraframework iron clusters and iron oxides are formed selectively by adjusting the pH values of the synthesis solutions and Fe/Si molar ratios. A series of MCM-22/ZSM-35 composites has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by XRD, SEM, particle size distribution analysis, N-2 adsorption and NH3-TPD techniques. Pulse and continuous flow reactions were carried out to evaluate the catalytic performances of these composites in aromatization of olefins, respectively. It was found that MCM-22/ZSM-35 composites could be rapidly crystallized at 174 degrees C with an optimal gel composition of SiO2/Al2O3=25, Na2O/SiO2=0.11, HMI/SiO2=0.35, and H2O/SiO2=45 (molar ratio), of which the weight ratio of ZSM-35 zeolite in the composite relied on the crystallization time. The coexistence of MCM-22 and ZSM-35 in the composite (MCM-22/ZSM-35=45/55 wt/wt) was observed to exert a notable synergistic effect on the aromatization ability for butene conversion and FCC gasoline updating, possibly due to the intergrowth of some MCM-22 and ZSM-35 layers.
