A simple, productive, low-cost route has been developed to synthesize the high-quality 1-D nanorods of CdE (E = Se, Te) with 3-8 nm in diameter and 5-40 nm in length using myristic acid as a complexing agent. Moreover, the reaction is performed under mild conditions and relatively low temperatures. The Xray powder diffraction patterns confirmed the CdE nanorods with wurtzite structure.
Microwave-assisted synthesis of high-molecular-weight poly(ether imide)s by phase-transfer catalysis
Resumo:
A facile and rapid polycondensation reaction of disodium bisphenol A with bis(chlorophthalimide)s was preformed with a domestic microwave oven in o-dichlorobenzene by phase-transfer catalysis. The polymerization reactions, in comparison with conventional heating polycondensation, proceeded rapidly and were completed within 25 min. The polymerizations gave the corresponding poly(ether imide)s with inherent viscosities of 0.55-0.92 dL g(-1). The effects of various factors on the polymerization, such as the amount of the catalyst, the reaction time, and the microwave power were studied. The properties of the polymers were briefly characterized.
Synthesis and characterization of functionalized mesoporous silica by aerosol-assisted self-assembly
Resumo:
An efficient, productive, and low-cost aerosol-assisted self-assembly process has been developed to produce organically modified mesoporous silica particles via a direct co-condensation of silicate species and organosilicates that contain nonhydrolyzable functional groups in the presence of templating surfactant molecules. Different surfactants including cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, nonionic surfactant Brij-56, and triblock copolymer P123 have been used as the structure-directing agents. The organosilanes used in this study include tridecafluoro-1, 1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyltriethoxysilane, methytriethoxysilane, vinyltrimethoxysilane, and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate the formation of particles with various mesostructures. Fourier transform infrared and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectra confirm the organic ligands are covalently bound to the surface of the silica framework. The porosity, pore size, and surface area of the particles were characterized using nitrogen adsorption and desorption measurements.

With the presence of biopolymer-sodium alginate as additive, Eu-doped ZnO (zinc oxide) urchins consisting of nanorods were synthesized through a hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction pattern makes evident the absence of phase other than wurtzite ZnO. Upon excited by 325 nm xenon laser, such nanostructured Eu-doped ZnO urchins emit white light, which originates from the luminescence of ZnO and the intra-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. Besides acting as stabilizing agent, sodium alginate may also sensitize the Eu3+ ions in the nanostructures and facilitate the energy transfer from the host to Eu3+ ions. Novel Au-Pt bimetallic flower nanostructures fabricated on a polyamidoamine dendrimers-modified surface by electrodeposition are reported. These polyamidoamine dendrimers were stable, and they assisted the formation of Au-Pt bimetallic nanoflowers during the electrodeposition process. These nanoflowers were characterized by field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods. FE-SEM images showed that the bimetallic nanoflower included two parts: the "light" and the "pale" part. The two parts consisted of many small bimetallic nanoparticles, which was attributed to the progressive nucleation process. Moreover, the "light" part contained more bimetallic nanoparticles. The morphologies of bimetallic nanoflowers depended on the electrodeposition time and potential and the layer number of assembled dendrimers. The average size of nanoflowers increased with the increase in electrodeposition time. The layer number of assembled dendrimers obviously affected the size and morphologies of the "pale" parts of deposited nanoflowers.

Many efforts have been made in fabricating three-dimensional (3D) ordered zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures due to their growing applications in separations, sensors, catalysis, bioscience, and photonics. Here, we developed a new synthetic route to 3D ZnO-based hollow microspheres by a facile solution-based method through a water-soluble biopolymer (sodium alginate) assisted assembly from ZnO nanorods. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman and photoluminescence spectra of the ZnO-based hollow microspheres were obtained at room temperature to investigate their optical properties. The hollow microspheres exhibit exciting emission features with a wide band covering nearly all the visible region. The calculated CIE (Commission Internationale d'Eclairage) coordinates are 0.24 and 0.31, which fall at the edge of the white region (the 1931 CIE diagram). A possible growth mechanism of the 3D ZnO superstructures based on typical biopolymer-crystal interactions in aqueous solution is tentatively proposed, which might be really interesting because of the participation of the biopolymer.

Uniform platinum nanodendrites have been prepared at a water/oil interface by a facile catalyst-free method at room temperature. This is carried out by introducing NaBH4 into the platinum precursor solution in the presence of the second generation of carboxyl-cored dendrimer ([G-2]-CO2H dendrimer) and toluene to act as a protective agent and a linker, respectively. The average fractal dimension of 1.61 of the obtained platinum nanodendrites is calculated by analysing the transmission electron micrographs using the programs Fractal Dimension Version 1.1 and Fractal Dimension Calculator. Control experiments show that the fabrication of platinum nanodendrites can be operated with a wide parameter window, which undoubtedly raises the degree of control of the synthesis process. The potential application of such a nanostructure as a catalyst is investigated, and the results reveal that they show highly efficient catalytic properties for the typical redox reaction between hexacyanoferrate (III) and thiosulfate ions at 301 K.

A new asymmetric H-shaped block copolymer (PS)(2)-PEO-(PMMA)(2) has been designed and successfully synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization and living anionic polymerization. The synthesized 2,2-dichloro acetate-ethylene glycol (DCAG) was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene by ATRP to yield a symmetric homopolymer (Cl-PS)(2)-CHCCCCH2CH2OH with an active hydroxyl group. The chlorine was removed to yield the (PS)(2)-CHCOOCH2CH2OH ((PS)(2)-OH). The hydroxyl group of the (PS)(2)-OH, which is an active species of the living anionic polymerization, was used to initiate ethylene oxide by living anionic polymerization via DPMK to yield (PS)(2)-PEO-OH. The (PS)(2)-PEO-OH was reacted with the 2,2-dichloro acetyl chloride to yield (PS)(2)-PEO-OCCHCl2 ((PS)(2)-PEO-DCA). The asymmetric H-shaped block polymer (PS)(2)-PEO-(PMMA)(2) was prepared via ATRP of MMA at 130 degrees C using (PS)(2)-PEO-DCA as initiator and CuCl/bPy as the catalyst system. The architectures of the asymmetric H-shaped block copolymers, (PS)(2)-PEO-(PMMA)(2), were confirmed by H-1 NMR, GPC and Fr-IR.

Ambient reflection of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reduced by utilizing a multilayer low-reflection cathode. The low-reflection cathode structure consists of a semitransparent cathode layer, a transparent spacing layer and a high reflective layer. Metals with different optical properties, including silver (Ag) and samarium (Sm), are used as the semitransparent cathode layer, tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminium (Alq(3)) and aluminium (Al) are used as the spacing layer and high reflective layer, respectively. The incident ambient light could be reduced by the cathode structure via destructive optical interference. It is found that the Ag/Alq(3)/Al cathode shows a strong wavelength-dependent reflection. However, the Sm/Alq(3)/Al cathode demonstrates a low reflection in the whole visible range, and the resulting OLED shows a reduced luminous reflectance of 2.7% as compared to 81% for a control device with LiF/Al cathode. A further reduction to 0.9% is realized by replacing a multilayer of Alq(3)/Sm/Alq(3) for the single layer of Alq(3).

Rare earth oxide, neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), -assisted melt free-radical grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH) on isotactic-polypropylene (i-PP) was carried out by reactive extrusion. The experimental results reveal that the addition of Nd2O3 into reactive system leads to an enhancement of the grafting degree of MAH, along with an elevated degradation of i-PP matrix. When Nd2O3 content is 4.5 mmol %, the increment of the grafting degree of MAH (maximally) is up to about 30% compared with that of the related system without adding Nd2O3, while the severest degradation of i-PP matrix simultaneously occurs. On the basis of the reaction mechanism of PP-g-MAH proposed before, the sequence of beta-scission and grafting reaction is discussed in detail. It is found that, for the reactive system studied, most tertiary macroradicals first undergo beta-scission, and then, grafting reaction with MAH takes place at the new radical chain ends. The imported Nd2O3 has no effect on the aforementioned reaction mechanism, whereas it enhances the initiating efficiency of the initiator, dicumyl peroxide (DCP).

The molecular weight of recombinant hirudin ( rHV-2) was determined rapidly by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of fight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The effects of the three types of matrixes were compared and discussed, alpha-cynao-4-hydroxycinnamic acid was proved to be the best matrix. It showed that MALDI-TOF-MS was superior to the traditional method of molecular weight determination of the biological macromolecules. The mass spectrum data proved that the primary structure of rHV-2 was correct and there was no amino acid deletion, mutation and modification in its expression, refolding and purification.

Fullerenes-extracted soot (FES) is the by-product of fullerenes production. Retention characteristics at different temperatures for 17 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on FES are measured. The adsorption and desorption efficiencies for VOCs on FES adsorbent tubes range from 40.8 to 117%, most of them being 100+/-20%. The values are compared with Tenax GR, an adsorbent commonly used in environmental analysis. FES can be used as an adsorbent of low cost to collect VOCs in environmental samples. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MAIDI-TOF-MS) was used for analysis of poly(arylene phosphonate) cyclic oligomers. A comparison was made by using 1,8,9-dithranol, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and retinoic acid as the matrix. The result showed that the retinoic acid produced the strongest ion signals under the conditions used. Different salts of metals were used as the cationization agents to examine the effect on the cyclic oligomers. It was found that the salts could produce metal-cyclic oligomer cation spectra and lithium was the stronger one than those of silver so, the suitable matrix and cationization agent for the new cyclic oligmer were obtained. They were very effective for the analysis of poly(arylene phosphonate) cyclic oligomer.
