In this paper, the synthesis and crystallization behavior of poly(ether ether ketone ether ketone) (PEEKEK) are reported. PEEKEK was prepared from 4,4'-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl) diphenyl ether (4,4'-FBDE) and hydroquinone along the nucleophilic substitution route. The thermal properties were investigated by using DSC and TGA. The crystallization behavior of PEEKEK under several conditions, i.e., crystallization from the molten state (melt crystallization), crystallization from a quenched sample (cold crystallization) and crystallization induced by exposing glassy sample to methylene chloride (solvent-induced crystallization) has also been investigated. The results show that crystallization of PEEKEK could be induced by the above methods, and no polymorphism was found. The differences in the crystallization of PEEKEK induced by the above methods are seen in their degree of crystallinity.

Tridentate ligand[(2,6-ArN=C(Me))(2)C5H3N](Ar=4-allyl-2,6-(i-Pr)(2)C6H3)(4)which contains allyl groups on each aryl ring was ready prepared and reacted with FeCl2. 4H(2)O to give the precatalyst [(2,6-ArN=C(CH3))(2)C5H3N]. FeCl2 (5). Compounds 2-5 were characterized by H-1 NMR, EI-MS,and IR. The complex 5 which was actived by methylaluminoxane(MAO) exhibits high activity for ethylene polymerization [1.9 x 10(6) g pE.(mol Fe . h)(-1) at 0 degreesC]. It was showed that the activity was decreased with increasing temperature and the polymer product was highly linear PE with (M) over bar (eta) varying from 50000 to 260000.

Novel macrocyclic oligomers were synthesized through the condensation of phenolphthalein and m-phthaloyl-dichloride with triethylamine as catalyst in the mixed solution of methylene chloride and THF via pseudo-high-dilution technique. The oligomers were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, MS, WAXD, TGA and DSC. It was found that the 3 : 3 adduct (molar ratio of phenolphthalein to m-phthaloyl-dichloride) and the 4 : 4 adduct were the main products and there was a small amount of crystalline in the macrocyclic mixtures. When the mixtures were heated to 360 degrees C, the crystalline disappeared.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was used to identify cyclic(aryl ether ketone) oligomers, using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid as a matrix, and Na+ and K+ as cationization agents, The existence of different ring-sized cyclic oligomers up to 9 and their distribution were determined and compared with GPC results, The results indicated that MALDI-TOF MS was a powerful and rapid analytical tool for the cyclic oligomers.

Aryl polyester dendrimers and dendrons have been prepared by using 'branched monomer strategies', in which the surface and the focal point of the multi-branched monomer have been protected with two different kinds of protective group. The protective group for the focal point was stable during deprotection of the surface. Different wedges could be attached to the multi-branched monomers to form large dendrons whilst active dendrons could be attached to different cores to form various dendrimers with different wedges and different cores.

Using the wide-angle X-ray diffraction method, the variation of crystallographic parameters of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been studied in different heat treatment temperatures. All the reflections and their intensities as well as their Miller indices are presented in detail according to an orthorhombic system. The investigation indicates that the unit cell parameters a, b, c and the unit cell volume V systematically decrease with increasing heat treatment temperature. This variation is interpreted by the change of conformation of polymer molecular chains during thermal treatment. The results calculated from the formula of degree of crystallinity (W-c,W-x) for PEEKK, which was derived based on X-ray scattering intensity theory and the graphic multipeak resolution method, are compatible with the density measurement (W-c,W-d) and calorimetry (W-c,W-h) values. Poly(ether ether ketone)/poly(ether diphenyl ether ketone) blend containing 30 wt% PEDEK was used to investigate the melting behaviour of immiscible PEEK/PEDEK blends. The results measured from differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) showed that immiscible PEEK/PEDEK blends isothermally crystallized at a temperature between Tg and Tm-2 (PEEK's normal melting point) from the glassy state also exhibited the multi-melting behaviour like poly(aryl ether ketones) homopolymers. In addition, the low-temperature melting peak was independent of composition of poly(aryl ether ketones) blends and only associated with the thermal history. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The crystallization and melting behaviours of a multiblock copolymer comprising poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether sulfone) (PES) blocks whose number average molecular weights <((M)over bar (n)'s)> were 10 000 and 2900, respectively, were studied. The effect of thermal history on crystallization was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurement. A differential scanning calorimeter was used to detect the thermal transitions and to monitor the energy evolved during the isothermal crystallization process from the melt. The results suggest that the crystallization of the copolymer becomes more difficult as compared with that of pure PEEK. The equilibrium melting point of the copolymer was found to be 357 degrees C, about 30 degrees C lower than that of pure PEEK. During the isothermal crystallization, relative crystallinity increased with crystallization time, following an Avrami equation with exponent n approximate to 2. The fold surface free energy for the copolymer crystallized from the melt was calculated to be 73 erg cm(-2), about 24 erg cm(-2) higher than that of pure PEEK. The crystal structure of poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) is predicted by using Cerius2 software according to the wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) experiment result. The predicted structure has a planar zigzag chain conformation between ether oxygen and ketone carbons in an orthorhombic lattice. Average zigzag angle is 126 degrees and average torsion angle is 30.32 degrees. The WAXD powder pattern calculated from the crystal packing model is in good agreement with the experiment result.

The developments of physical aging in phenolphthalein poly(aryl-ether-ketone) (PEK-C) and poly(aryl-ether-sulfone) (PES-C) with time at two aging temperatures up to 20 K below their respective glass transition temperatures (T-g = 495 and 520 K) have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Substantial relaxation within the aging course of several hours were observed by detecting T-g decreasing during physical aging process at the two aging temperatures. The relaxation processes of both polymers are extremely nonlinear and self-retarding. The time dependencies of their enthalpies during the initial stages of annealing were approximately modeled using the Narayanaswamy-Tool model. The structure relaxation parameters obtained from this fitting were used to predict the possibility of physical aging occurring at their respective using temperatures. Four novel triazole compounds containing thioamide group were designed and synthesized by using triazole, phenyl isothiocyanate and aryl ethyl ketone as raw material. Their structures were conformed by elemental analysis, H-1 NMR, IR and MS spectra. The crystal structure of 1-[1-anilinothiocarbonyl-1-(4-fluorobenzoyl)methyl]-1,2,4-trizole has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The preliminary bioassays have shown that the title compounds exhibit certain antifungal activity.

A mild and efficient copper-catalyzed system for N-arylation of alkylamines and N-H heterocycles with aryl iodides using a novel, readily prepared and highly stable oxime-functionalized phosphine oxide ligand was developed. A Ni-promoted ligand-free palladium catalyst system for Suzuki coupling of aryl bromides has been developed in high efficiency under mild reaction conditions. It was obtained in situ by introducing NiCl2 to PdCl2/PVP using a parallel high-throughput screening technique. A wide range of aryl bromides bearing a variety of functional groups was evaluated.

Liquid phase hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene was studied over Ni/active carbon (Ni/AC), Ni/gamma-Al2O3, Ni/SiO2 and Raney Ni. The complete hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene was realized at 333-343 K on Ni/AC under hydrogen atmosphere of 1.0 MPa in the presence of alkaline hydroxide. Aryl halides, three chlorotoluenes (o-, m- and p-), three chloroanilines, three chlorobenzotrifluorides, three dichlorobenzenes and two trichlorobenzenes (1,2,3- and 1,2,4-) were also completely hydrodechlorinated under the similar conditions. Chlorobenzene derivatives having either an electron-donating group or an electron-withdrawing group decreased their reactivities with respect to the unsubstituted chlorobenzene.
