The reactions of (1) CH4 + MgO --> MgOH. + CH3. and (2) CH4 + MgO --> Mg + CH3OH have been studied on the singlet spin state potential energy surface at the MP2/6-311+G(2d,2p) level. These two reaction channels, both involving intermediates and transition states, have been rationalized by the structures of the species involved, natural bond orbital (NBO), and vibrational frequency analysis. We have considered two initial interacting models between CH4 and MgO: a collinear C-H approach to the O end of the MgO forming the MgOCH4 complex with C-3nu symmetry and three hydrogen atoms of the methane point to the Mg end of the MgO forming the OMgCH4 complex with C-1 symmetry. The calculations predict that reactions 1 and 2 are exothermic by 39.8 and 86.5 kJ mol(-1), respectively. Also, the former reaction proceeds more easily than the latter, and the complex HOMgCH3 is energetically preferred in the reaction of MgO + CH4.

Molybdenum phosphide (MoP) and supported molybdenum phosphide (MoP/gamma-Al2O3) have been prepared by the temperature-programmed reduction method. The surface sites of the MoP/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst were characterized by carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption with in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. A characteristic IR band at 2037 cm(-1) was observed on the MoP/gamma-Al2O3 that was reduced at 973 K. This band is attributed to linearly adsorbed CO on Mo atoms of the MoP surface and is similar to IR bands at 2040-2060 cm(-1), which correspond to CO that has been adsorbed on some noble metals, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Density functional calculations of the structure of molybdenum phosphides, as well as CO chemisorption on the MoP(001) surface, have also been studied on periodic surface models, using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional. The results show that the chemisorption of CO on MoP occurred mainly on top of molybdenum, because the bonding of CO requires a localized mininum potential energy. The adsorption energy obtained is DeltaH(ads) approximate to -2.18 eV, and the vibrational frequency of CO is 2047 cm-1, which is in good agreement with the IR result of CO chernisorption on MoP/gamma-Al2O3.

The mass resolved multiphoton ionization (MPI) spectra of methyl iodide were obtained in the 430-490 nm region using a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer. They have the same vibrational structure, which testifies that the fragment species, in the wavelength region under study, are from the photodissociation of multiphoton ionized molecular parent ions. Some features in the spectra are identified as three-photon excitations to 6p and 7s Rydberg states of methyl iodide. Two new vibrational structures of some Rydberg states are observed. The mechanism of ionization and dissociation is also discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The density function theory was used to calculate the potential energy surface for the decomposition of CF3OF. The geometries, vibrational frequencies and energies of all stationary points were obtained. The calculated harmonic frequencies agreed well with the experimental ones. Three decomposition channels of CF3OF were studied. The calculated reaction enthalpy (29.85 kcal/mol) of the elimination reaction CF3OF --> CF2O + F-2 was in good agreement with the experimental value (27.7 kcal/mol). The O-F bond of CF3OF is broken easily by comparing the energies, while the decomposition channel to yield the CF30 and F radicals is the main reaction path. The structural properties for various SiCO isomers in the singlet and triplet states have been investigated using CASSCF methods with a 6-311 +G* basis set and also using three DFT and MP2 with same basis set for those systems except for the linear singlet state. The detailed bonding character is discussed, and the state-state correlations and the isomerization mechanism are also determined. Results indicate that there are four different isomers for each spin state, and for all isomers, the triplet state is more stable than the corresponding singlet state. The most stable is the linear SiCO ((3)Sigma(-)) species and may be refer-red to the ground state. At the CASSCF-MP2(full)/6-311+G* level, the state-state energy separations of the other triplet states relative to the ground state are 43.2 (cyclic), 45.2 (linear SiOC), and 75.6 kcal/mol (linear CSiO), respectively, whereas the triplet-singlet state excitation energies for each configuration are 17.3 (linear SiCO), 2.2 (cyclic SiCO), 10.2 (linear SiOC), and 18.5 kcal/mol (linear CSiO), respectively. SiCo ((3)Sigma(-)) may be classified as silene (carbonylsilene), and its COdelta- moiety possesses CO- property. The dissociation energy of the ground state is 42.5 kcal/mol at the CASSCF-MP2(full)/6-311+G* level and falls within a range of 36.5-41.5 kcal/mol at DFT level, and of 23.7-28.9 kcal/mol at the wave function-correlated level, whereas the vertical IP is 188.8 kcal/mol at the CASSCF-MP2(full)/6-311+G* level and is very close to the first IP of Si atom. Three linear isomers (SiCO, SiOC, and CSiO) have similar structural bonding character. SiOC may be referred to the iso-carbonyl Si instead of the aether compound, whereas the CSiO isomer may be considered as the combination of C (the analogue of Si) with SiO (the analogue of CO). The bonding is weak for all linear species, and the corresponding potential energy surfaces are flat, and thus these linear molecules are facile. Another important isomer is of cyclic structure, it may be considered as the combination of CO with Si by the side pi bond. This structure has the smallest triplet state-singlet state excitation energy (similar to2.2 kcal/mol); the C-O bonds are longer, and the corresponding vibrational frequencies are significantly smaller than those of the other linear species. This cyclic species is not classified as an epoxy compound. State-state correlation analysis and the isomerization pathway searches have indicated that there are no direct correlations among three linear structures for each spin state, but they may interchange by experiencing two transition states and one cyclic intermediate. The easiest pathway is to break the Si-O bond to go to the linear SiCO, but its inverse process is very difficult. The most difficult process is to break the C-O bond and to go to the linear CSiO.

Nanocrystalline Gd1.77Yb0.2 Er0.03O3 samples were prepared by combustion and precipitation methods. Structures and upconversion luminescence properties of samples were studied. The results of XRD show that all samples are cubic structure, the average crystallite size could be calculated as 23 nm and 39 nm, respectively. The lattice constants were obtained. The FT-IR spectra were measured to investigate the vibrational feature of the samples.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of octadecylammonium octadecanoate (C(18)H(37)j7NH(3)(+)C(17)H(35)COO(-),ODASA) and octadecylammonium octadecanoate-d(35) (C18H37+NH3+C17D35COO-, ODASA-d(53)) were prepared and their thermal behaviors were investigated by variable-temperature Fourier transform infrared transmission spectroscopy. It was found that the two hydrocarbon chains of ODASA molecule in LB films are highly ordered while that protonated (H) chain in ODASA-d(35) is partially disordered with some gauche conformers introduced at room temperature.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, dissociation energies, electron affinities, ionization potentials and dipole moments of the title molecules in neutral and charged ions were studied by use of density functional method. Ground states for each molecule were assigned. The calculated bond distance decreases with the increasing of atomic number of 4d metals, reaches minimum at RhS, then increases. For cationic molecules, the calculated bond distance decreases to the minimum at MoS+, then increases. The calculated vibrational frequency decreases from YS(YS+) to PdS(PdS+) for both neutral and cationic molecules. The bond ionic character decreases from YS(YS+) to PdS(PdS+) for neutral and cationic molecules. The bonding patterns are discussed and compared with the available studies.

A universal metal-molecule-metal sandwich architecture by the self-assembly of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and Au NPs of various shapes interconnected with 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) molecules was presented. These Ag NPs/4-ATP/Au NPs sandwich structures were characterized by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using an off-surface plasmon resonance condition. Enhancement factors (EF) on the order of 10(8) for 9b(b(2)) vibration mode were observed for the 4-ATP self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in such sandwich structures. The factors are 2 orders of magnitude larger than that on the monolayer of Au NPs of various shapes under similar condition. More importantly, remarkable increase in the intensity of b(2) vibrational modes, which is characteristic of the charge transfer (CT) behavior between metal NPs and 4-ATP molecules, was observed in these sandwich structures under 1064 nm excitation. The obtained EF on these sandwich structure for 9b(b(2)) is larger than that for 7a vibration mode by a factor of similar to 10(2), demonstrating the importance of the contribution of the CT mechanism and the CT behavior of metal contacts, which play a significant role in metal-molecule-metal nanosystems.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials, dissociation energies, and dipole moments of the title molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied using density functional method. Ground electronic state was assigned for each molecule. The bonding patterns were analyzed and compared with both the available data and across the series. It was found that, besides ionic component, covalent bonds are formed between the metal s, d orbitals, and the p orbital of S, Se, and Te. For neutral and cationic molecules, the covalent character increases from ScX to CrX and from FeX to CuX with an exception of decrease at MnX and ZnX, while for anionic molecules, the trend is not obvious. For both neutral and charged molecules, the sulfides have the shortest bond distance and largest vibrational frequency, while tellurides have the largest bond distance and smallest vibrational frequency. For neutral and anionic molecules, the dissociation energy of sulfides is the largest, that of tellurides is the smallest, while this only remains true for cationic molecules from ScX+ to FeX+.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, dipole moments, dissociation energies, electron affinities, and ionization potentials of NIX (XM = Y-Cd, X = F, Cl, Br, I) molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied by density functional method, B3LYP. The bonding patterns were analyzed and compared with both the available data and across the series. It was found that besides ionic component, covalent bonds are formed between the 4d transition metal s, d orbitals, and the p orbital of halogen. For both neutral and charged molecules, the fluorides have the shortest bond distance, iodides the longest. Although the opposite situation is observed for vibrational frequency, that is, fluorides have the largest value, iodides the smallest. For neutral and anionic species, the dissociation energy tends to decrease with the increasing atomic number from Y to Cd, suggesting the decreasing or weakening of the bond strength. For cationic species, the trend is observed from Y to Ag.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials, dissociation energies and dipole moments of the title molecules in neutral, positively and negatively charged ions were studied by use of density functional method. Ground electronic state was assigned for each molecule. The bonding patterns were analyzed and compared with both the available data and across the series. It was found that besides ionic component, covalent bonds are formed between the metal s, d and f orbitals and oxygen p orbitals. Contrary to the well known lanthanide contraction, the bond distance is not regular from LaO to LuO for both neutral and charged molecules. An obvious population at 5d orbital was observed through the lanthanide series. 4f electrons also participate the chemical bonding for CeO to NdO and TbO to TmO. For EuO, GdO, YbO and LuO, 4f electrons tend to be localized. The spin multiplicity is regular for neutral and charged molecules. The spin multiplicity of the charged molecules can be obtained by -1 (or +1 for TbO+, DyO+, YbO- and YbO+) compared with the corresponding neutral molecules.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials, and dissociation energies of the diatomic 5d transition metal (except La) monoxides and their positively and negatively charged ions were studied by use of density functional methods B3LYP, BLYP, B3PW91, BPW91, B3P86, BP86, MPW1PW91, PBE1PBE, and SVWN. Our calculation shows that for each individual species, the calculated properties are quite sensitive to the method used. Compared with hybrid density functional method B3PW91 (B3P86), pure density functional method BPW91 (BP86) gives longer bond distance (lower vibrational frequency) from HfO to PtO for neutral species, HfO+ to IrO+ for cationic species, and HfO- to AuO- for anionic species. While for B3LYP and BLYP, the trend was observed for cationic species from HfO+ to IrO+ and anionic species from HfO- to AuO- (except TaO-), but not for neutrals. Pure density function methods BLYP, BPW91, and BP86 give larger dissociation energy compared with hybrid density functional methods B3LYP, B3PW91, and B3P86. SVWN in most cases gives the smallest bond distance, while BLYP gives the largest value. MPW1PW91 and PBE1PBE show the same performance in predicting the spectroscopic constants.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, electron affinities, ionization potentials and dissociation energies of the title molecules in neutral, positively and negatively charged ions were studied by use of density functional method. The calculated results were compared with previous theoretical and experimental studies. Ground states for each molecule were assigned. It was found that for some molecules, low-lying state, in which the energy is much close to the ground state, was obtained. In this case, further studies both experimentally and theoretically are necessary in order to find the true global minimum.

Equilibrium geometries, vibrational frequencies, and dissociation energies of the transition metal carbonyls MCO (M = Nb, Ta, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt) were studied by use of diverse density functional methods B3LYP, BLYP, B3P86, B3PW91, BHLYP, BP86, and PBE1PBE. It was found that the ground electronic state is (6)Sigma(+) for NbCO and TaCO, (2)Sigma(+) for RhCO,(2)Delta for IrCO, and (1)Sigma(+) for PdCO and PtCO, in agreement with previous theoretical studies. The calculated properties are highly dependent on the functionals employed, in particular for the dissociation energy. For most of the molecules, the predicted bond distance is in agreement with experiments and previous theoretical results. BHLYP is the worst method in reproducing the experimental results compared with the other density functional methods for the title molecules.
