This paper reports the synthesis of a novel maleimide-terminated thioetherimide oligomer and its copolymefization with reactive solvents bearing vinyl. Starting from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride and 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, 2,2',3,3'-thiodiphenyl tertracaboxylic dianhydride (3,3'-TDPA) and 3,3',4,4'-thiodiphenyl tertracaboxylic dianhydride (4,4'-TDPA) were synthesized. Thereby, a novel maleimide-terminated thioetherimide oligomer was prepared from. 3,3-TDPA, 4,4'-TDPA, 3,3'-dimethyl-4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane (DMMDA) and maleic anhydride. Binary and ternary copolymer resin were derived from corresponding binary and ternary homogeous solution consisting of thioetherimide oligomer, reactive solvent N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) or N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) and divinylbenzene (DVB) as modifier, initiated either by gamma ray irradiation or by benzoyl peroxide (BPO). Thermal and mechanical properties of copolymer resin are determined and compared in terms of the kind of reactive solvent, addition of modifier DVB. The effect of initiation approach on property of final copolymer resin were studied. Phase separation and sub-transition of ternary copolymer resin induced by BPO are observed, which could be accounted for by thermal movement of DMAA molecules during thermal initiation.

Using a solid phase extraction mini-column home-made from a neutral extractant Cyanex 923, inorganic Hg could be on-line preconcentrated and simultaneously separated from methyl mercury. The preconcentrated Hg (11) was then eluted with 10% HNO3 and subsequently reduced by NaBH4 to form Hg vapor before determination by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS). Optimal conditions for and interferences on the Hg preconcentration and measurement were at 1% HCl, for a 25 mL sample uptake volume and a 10 mL min(-1) sample loading rate. The detection limit was 0.2 ng L-1 and much lower than that of conventional method (around 15.8 ng L-1). The relative standard deviation (RSD) is 1.8% for measurements of 40 ng L-1 of Hg and the linear working curve is from 20 to 2000 ng L-1 (with a correlation coefficient of 0.9996). The method was applied in determination of inorganic Hg in city lake and deep well water (from Changchun, Jilin, China), and recovery test results for both samples were satisfactory.

The miscibility and the isothermal crystallization kinetics for PBT/Epoxy blends have been studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, and several kinetic analyses have been used to describe the crystallization process. The Avrami exponents n were obtained for PBT/Epoxy blends. An addition of small amount of epoxy resin (3%) leads to an increase in the number of effective nuclei, thus resulting in an increase in crystallization rate and a stronger trend of instantaneous three-dimensional growth. For isothermal crystallization, crystallization parameter analysis showed that epoxy particles could act as effective nucleating agents, accelerating the crystallization of PBT component in the PBT/Epoxy blends. The Lauritzen-Hoffman equation for DSC isothermal crystallization data revealed that PBT/Epoxy 97/3 had lower nucleation constant K, than 100/0, 93/7, and 90/10 PBT/Epoxy blends. Analysis of the crystallization data of PBT/Epoxy blends showed that crystallization occurs in regime II. The fold surface free energy, sigma(e) = 101.7-58.0 x 10(-3) J/m(2), and work of chain folding, q = 5.79-3.30 kcal/mol, were determined. The equilibrium melting point depressions of PBT/Epoxy blends were observed and the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters were obtained.

Nylon 11 (PA11)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared by melt-blending, followed by melt-extrusion through a capillary. Transmission electron n-Licroscopy shows that the exfoliated clay morphology is dominant for low nanofiller content, while the intercalated one is prevailing for high filler loading. Melt rheological properties of PA11 nanocomposites have been studied in both linear and nonlinear viscoelastic response regions. In the linear regime, the nanocomposites exhibit much higher storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") values than neat PAIL The values of G' and G" increase steadily with clay loading at low concentrations, while the G' and G" for the sample with 5 wt % clay show an inverse dependence and lie between the modulus values of the samples with 1 and 2 wt % of clay. This is attributed to the alignment/orientation of nanoclay platelets in the intercalated nanocomposite induced by capillary extrusion. In the nonlinear regime, the nanocomposites show increased shear viscosities when compared with the neat resin. The dependence of the shear viscosity on clay loading has analogous trend to that of G' and G".

Nylon 6/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)(ABS) blends were prepared in the molten state by a twin-screw extruder. Maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAP) and solid epoxy resin (bisphenol type-A) were used as compatibilizers for these blends. The effects of compatibilizer addition to the blends were studied via tensile, torque, impact properties and morphology tests. The results showed that the additions of epoxy and MA copolymer to nylon 6/ABS blends enhanced the compatibility between nylon 6 and ABS, and this lead to improvement of mechanical properties of their blends and in a size decrease of the ABS domains.

Two commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) resins, resin A and resin B, having different processing properties, were fractionated by preparative temperature-rising elution fractionation (TREF). The TREF fractions were further characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), gel permeation chromatography coupled with light scattering (GPC-LS), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). GPC-LS did not find visible long-chain branching in either resin A or B. The results from TREF and DSC indicate that the fractional melting parameter f(T) may be used to predict the profile of the TREF cumulative weight distribution curve. GPC results show that the molecular weights of the fractions tend to increase with elution temperature. WAXD and DSC data show that the crystallinity of fractions does not increase monotonically with increase of elution temperature. There appears to be a maximum in the plot of crystallinity versus elution temperature. The high-speed BOPP resin A has a lower isotacticity but a homogeneous isotacticity distribution and a higher molecular weight but a broader molecular weight distribution than resin B.

Polyethylene (PE)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ coordination polymerization using a MMT/MgCl2/TiCl4 catalyst activated by AI(Et),. The catalyst was prepared by first diffusing MgCl2 into the swollen MMT layers, followed by loading TiCl4 on the inner/outer layer surfaces of MMT where MgCl2 was already deposited. The intercalation of MMT layers by MgCl2 and TiCl, was demonstrated by the enlarged interlayer spacing determined by WAXD. The nanoscale dispersion of MMT layers in the polyethylene matrix was characterized by WAXD and TEM. As a consequence, the crystallinity of the nanocomposite decreased sharply, whereas the tensile strength was significantly improved compared to that of virgin polyethylene of comparable molecular weight. The confinement of the nanodispersed MMT layers to molecular chain and the strong interaction between the nanoscale MMT layers and the resin matrix were thought to account for the decrease of crystallinity and the remarkable enhancement of strength.

Solvent free polyaniline emeraldine base(EB) corrosion protection coating was prepared, employing aliphatic polyamine as solvent of EB as well as hardener of epoxy resin. This coating passed 2000h of salt fog test when the EB loading was about 1 wt%. The interaction between EB and iron indicated that EB acted as a "quasi-catalyst" to cause the formation of densed iron oxide film in the interface.

This paper describe a Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) method to detect procyclidine in human urine following separation by capillary electrophoresis (CE). An ECL detection cell was designed for post-column addition of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+). Parameters affecting separation and detection were optimized, leading to a detection limit of 1 x 10(-9) mol/l in an on-capillary stacking mode. For application in urine, a cartridge packed with slightly acidic cation-exchange resin was used to eliminate the matrix effects of urine and improve the detection sensitivity. Extraction recovery was nearly 90%.

The PVT data of five kinds of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) Resins was measured by the PVT-100 apparatus. Thermal expansion coefficients (alpha) and isothermal compressibility (beta) were evaluated from Tait equation in the melting state and then compared with those fitted with the value of experiment. The results showed that it was reasonable to calculate alpha and beta with Tait equation in the melting state. At the same time, it was found that thermal expansion coefficients, isothermal compressibility and the melting temperature (T-m) of one of BOPP melts (S28C) were lower than those of the others in the same test conditions, indicating that the volume deformation of S28C resin is' less so that it could be realized to avoid arising surface defects of the film (biaxially oriented polypropylene film) due to. contracting, thereby decrease damage to the film in the subsequence process. Accordingly superior processing properties of S28C resin are confirmed from PVT. speciality.

In the present study, curcumin from Chinese herbal medicine turmeric was determined by capillary electrophoresis with amperometric detection (CE-AD) pretreated by a self-designed, simple, inexpensive solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge based on the material of tributyl phosphate resin. An average concentration factor of 9 with the recovery of >80% was achieved when applied to the analysis of curcumin in extracts of turmeric. Under the optimized CE-AD conditions: a running buffer composed of 15 mM phosphate buffer at a pH 9.7, separation voltage at 16 W, injection for 6 s at 9 W and detection at 1.20 V, CE-AD with SPE exhibited low detection limit as 3 - 10(-8) mol/l (SIN = 3), high efficiency of 1.0(.)10(5) N, linear range of 7(.)10(-4) -3(.)10(-6) mol/l (r = 0.9986) for curcumin extracted from light petroleum. The method developed resulted in enhancement of the detection sensitivity and reduction of interference from sample matrix in complicated samples and exhibited the potential application for routine analysis, especially in food, because a relatively complete process of sample treatment and analysis was described.

Communication: Conducting semi-interpenetrating network composites with low conductivity percolation threshold were synthesized from waterborne conducting polyaniline (cPAn) and melamine-urea resin, A perfect network of cPAn in the composite was observed by means of TEM (see Figure). The conductivity stability of cPAn in water was improved by confining the chain mobility of cPAn via in-situ crosslinking of melamine-urea resin. Cyclic voltammetry of the composites reveals electrochemical activities and reversibilities similarly to those of pure cPAn.

A novel AB-monomer, 3-maleimidostilbene (ST-MAI), was synthesized. DSC investigation indicated that the ST-MAI monomer melted at 127 degrees C and thermally polymerized in the temperature range of 180 similar to 300 degrees C. LR investigation on the thermal polymerization processes proved that the thermal polymerization included not only copolymerizaiton between stilbene and maleimide, but also homopolymerization of maleimide. The largest reaction conversion of maleimide and stilbene unit in a ST-MAI monomer was about 82% and 50% respectively. The glass transition temperature of cured ST-MAI resin was 234 degrees C, determined by DSC. The decomposition temperatures for 10% weight loss was above 430 degrees C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres.

The binary and ternary rare-earth terbium(m) complexes were introduced into the styrene/alpha -methylacrylic acid copolymerization system, and some optical resins that possess a high transparency in visible light region were obtained. The study of the optical property showed that they have good luminescent properties such as a high luminous intensity and a long luminous lifetime, In addition, we investigated the relationship among the transparency, the luminescent property of the copolymer, and the content of the components in the polymeric system. The results indicated that the optical resins can provide a relatively stable environment for composite rare earth complexes, which is good to exhibit the luminescent properties of rare earth complexes. At the same time, the rare earth complexes can offer the transparent resin a novel function.
