Compatibilization of blends of Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and LLDPE-copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 4-vinylpyridine (poly(MMA-co-4VP) with poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) have been studied. Mechanical properties of the LLDPE-PMMA blends increase upon addition of EMAA. In order to further improve interfacial adhesion of LLDPE and PMMA, 4-vinyl pyridine units are introduced into PMMA chains, or poly(MMA-co-4VP) is used as the polar polymer. In LLDPE-poly(MMA-co-4VP)-EMAA blends, interaction of MAA in EMAA with 4VP of poly(MMA-co-4VP) causes a band shift in the infrared (IR) spectra. Chemical shifts of N-1s binding energy in X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) experiments indicate a transfer of proton from MAA to 4VP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures show that the morphology of the blends were improved upon addition of EMAA. Nonradiative energy transfer (NRET) fluorescence results attest that there exists interdiffusion of chromophore-labeled LLDPE chains and chromophore-labeled poly(MMA-co-4VP) chains in the interface. Based on experimental results, the mechanism of compatibilization is studied in detail. Compatibilization is realized through the interaction between MAA in EMAA with 4VP in poly(MMA-co-4VP). 1:1 complexes of beta-cyclodextrin (CD) with three amino acids (Gly, Phe and Trp) have been detected as ions in the gas phase using infusion positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In contrast with the positive ion ESI mass spectra of simple aqueous solutions, the aggregates and adducts usually formed in the ESI process did not appear in the positive ion ESI spectra of solutions buffered with ammonium acetate (NH4Ac), even at higher analyte concentrations, These studies suggest that addition of buffer and/or use of a low analyte concentration should be used to overcome formation of aggregates and metal ion adducts in such mass spectrometry studies. Also, the deprotonated complexes are dissociated by collision induced dissociation (CID) to form an abundant product ion, the deprotonated CD, requiring transfer of a proton to the amino acid carboxyl group, To understand formation of complexes in the gas phase, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate free amino acids (AAs) from complexes in an incubated solution. The ESI mass spectra of the GPC fractions show the presence of 1:1 complexes of both CD-aromatic amino acids and CD-aliphatic amino acids. Compared with CD-aliphatic amino acid complexes, CD-aromatic amino acid complexes appear to be destabilized in the gas phase, possibly because the hydrophobic interaction which binds the aromatic group of amino acids in the CD cavity in solution may become repulsive when solvent evaporates from the droplets during the electrospray process, whereas those complex ions formed as proton bound dimers are stabilized by electrostatic forces, the major binding force for such complexes in the gas phase. In addition, the GPC technique coupled with off-line ESI-MS can rapidly separate CD complexes by size, and provides some information on the character of the complexes in solution. Separation of Ce(IV) and RE(III) was investigated by hollow fiber membrane-based extraction with contercurrent recirculating operation. The mass transfer coefficients of Ce(IV) and RE(III) and the effective factors to them were tested. The results show the mass transfer coefficient of Ce(IV) is larger than that of RE(III), and their mass transfer mechanism is different. The mass transfer of Ce(IV) was controlled by the resistance in water critical layer due to its more rapid interfacial reaction rate and larger distribution coefficient, which was different from RE(III) mass transfer with a slow interfacial reaction rate and small distribution coefficient. Ce(IV) was separated from the mixed solution of Ce(IV) and RE(III) by means of the difference of their mass transfer rates.

Electrochemical behavior of the transfer of H+ across polypyrrole membrane (PPM) was studied. The transfer process was quasi-reversible and mainly diffusion-controlled. PPM electropolymerized in water solution has better reversibility than that in CH3CN solution for the transfer of H+. The transfer process of H+ across the two kinds of PPM indicated that the PPM electrochemically polymerized was of asymmetry.

The interfacial characteristics of poly-L-lysine (PL) attached on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were studied by an electrochemical method. The results indicated that PL\MPA layer inhibited partly the diffusion process of redox species in solution, and the electrode surface behaved like a microelectrode array. Its permeation effect was also strongly affected by Mg2+. The more Mg2+ ions were added into the electrolyte solution, the greater the difficulty with which the electron transfer of potassium ferricyanide took place. The three different conformations of PL on the electrode surface had different influences on the electron transfer processes of ferricyanide. PL in random coil state hindered most strongly the electron transfer behavior of ferricyanide, while the alpha-helical PL had nearly no effect and the effect of the beta-sheet state PL was intermediate of these. We investigated the binding characteristics of double-stranded DNA to self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing viologen groups formed on the surface of gold electrodes via Au-S bonds. The positive charged and hydrophobic surfaces of the viologen SAMs modified gold electrodes are suitable to bind strongly dth DNA, whose interactions to solution DNA and adsorbed DNA both lead to positive shifts (22.5 mV and 65 mV, respectively) in the first redox potential ci viologen centers, indicating that the main interaction is from a hydrophobic interaction. Meanwhile, the binding of DNA strongly affects the kinetics of electron transfer of the viologen group so that the separation of anodic and cathodic peak potentials becomes larger and the heterogeneous electron transfer constant becomes smaller.

Monolayers of biological compounds including redox proteins and enzymes, and phospholipids have been immobilized on a gold electrode surface through self-assembling. These proteins and enzymes, such as cytochrome c, cytochrome c oxidase and horseradish peroxidase (HRP), immobilized covalently to the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid on a gold electrode, communicate directly electrons with the electrode surface without mediators and keep their physiological activities. The electron transfer of HRP with the gold electrode can also be mediated by the alkanethiol SAMs with electroactive group viologens on the gold electrode surface. All these direct electrochemistries of proteins and enzymes might offer an opportunity to build a third generation of biosensors without mediators for analytes, such as H2O2, glucose and cholesterol. Monensin and valinomycin have been incorporated into the bilayers on the gold electrode consisting of the SAMs of alkanethiol and a lipid monolayer, which have high selectivity for monovalent ions, and the resulting Na+ or K+ sensor has a wide linear range and high stability. These self-assembly systems provide a good mimetic model for studying the physiological function of a membrane and its associated enzyme. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

In this paper we study the ion transfer across the liquid/liquid interface by impedance spectrum technique in the four - electrode system. We present a method of getting the real interfacial impedance curve from the apparent impedance curve obtained in the four - electrode system. A practical kinetics investigation on the transfer of tetramethylammonium ion at the water/nitrobenzene interface was done with the method to verify the validity of the method. The transfer of tetramethylammonium ion at the W/O interface is really a reversible transfer.

A cryo-hydrogel membrane (CHM) immobilized at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode is reported for the direct electron transfer of redox proteins. The most attractive characteristics of this CHM were its hydrophilic micro-environment for incorporated proteins to retain their activities, its high ability for protection against interference of denatured and adsorbed proteins at the electrode, its potential applications for various proteins or enzymes, as well as its high mechanical strength and thermal stability. A clear well developed and stable redox wave was obtained for commercially available horse heart myoglobin without further purification, giving a peak to peak separation Delta E(p) = 93 mV at 5 mV s(-1) and the formal electrode potential E(0)' = -0.158 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The formal heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant was calculated as k(0)' = 5.7 X 10(-4) cm s(-1) at pH 6.5, showing rapid electron transfer was achieved. The pH controlled conformational equilibria, acid state --> natural state --> basic I state --> basic II state, of myoglobin at the CHM GC electrode in the pH range 0-13.8 were also observed and are discussed in detail.

The redox potential, surface composition and oxygen species of a series of complex oxides LaMn1-xFexO3 (x=0-1) having perovskite structure (ABO(3)) have been investigated by means of XI'S. The variation of binding energies referring to Mn2p and Fe 2p under different treatment offerred an obvious evidence of redox between Mn and Fe, which could be expressed as Mn4+ + Fe(3-delta)+ Mn(4-delta)+ Fe3+ Feat Through computer fit three kinds of adsorbed oxygen species (O-I, O-II, O-III) have been evaluated based on the XPS spectra of O1s. From the variation of contents of different oxygen species, it could be concluded that. the redox occuring in the surface might be related with the adsorbed oxygen species O-I and O-II, furthermore the possibility of transfer of electron between adsorption site and oxygen was also discussed.

The electrochemically polymerized azure A film electrode was firstly reported in this paper. A quasi-reversible electrode processes of myoglobin with the formal heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(sh)) of 1.73 x 10(-4) cm.s-1 at the polymerized azure A modified electrode have been achieved using in-situ UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry. The adsorption of myoglobin on the polymerized azure A film electrode surface was confirmed by XPS. With simultaneously studying of cyclic voltammetry and in-situ cyclic voltabsorptometry, the attribution of the voltammetry responses of myoglobin at the film electrode has been studied. The mechanism for the heterogeneous electron transfer of myoglobin at the polymerized azure A film modified electrode has been proposed as well.

In the presence of LiCI in the aqueous phase and tetrabutytammoniumtetraphenylborate(TBATPB) in the organic phase, the systems water/allyl iso-thiocyanate (W/AIT) and water/nitrobensene (W/NB) show a same wide epotential window. thermodynamic parameters of ion transfer W/AIT interface were determined. In systems of W/P and V/S the influence solvent effect on the standard gibbs energies of transfer of was discussed.
