This paper deals with fracture analyses in 3-dimensional bodies containing a surface crack. A general solution of stress-strain fields at crack tip is proposed. Based on the stress-strain fields obtained, a high-order 3-dimensional special element is established to calculate the stress intensity factors in a plate with a surface crack. The variation of stress intensity factors with geometric parameters is investigated.

In this paper, the governing equations and the analytical method of the secondorder asymptotic field for the plane-straln crack problems of mode I have been presented. The numerical calculation has been carried out. The amplitude coefficients k2 of the second term of the asymptotic field have been determined after comparing the present results with some fine results of the finite element calculation. The variation of coefficients k2 with changes of specimen geometry and developments of plastic zone have been analysed. It is shown that the second term of the asymptotic field has significant influence on the near-crack-tip field. Therefore, we may reasonably argue that both the J-integral and the coefficient k2 can beeome two characterizing parameters for crack initiation.

We experimentally investigate the generation of high-order harmonics in a 4-mm-long gas cell using midinfrared femtosecond pulses at various wavelengths of 1240 nm, 1500 nm, and 1800 nm. It is observed that the yield and cutoff energy of the generated high-order harmonics critically depend on focal position, gas pressure, and size of the input beam which can be controlled by an aperture placed in front of the focal lens. By optimizing the experimental parameters, we achieve a cutoff energy at similar to 190 eV with the 1500 nm driving pulses, which is the highest for the three wavelengths chosen in our experiment.

The imaging technology of stimulated emission depletion (STED) utilizes the nonlinearity relationship between the fluorescence saturation and the excited state stimulated depletion. It implements three-dimensional (3D) imaging and breaks the diffraction barrier of far-field light microscopy by restricting fluorescent molecules at a sub-diffraction spot. In order to improve the resolution which attained by this technology, the computer simulation on temporal behavior of population probabilities of the sample was made in this paper, and the optimized parameters such as intensity, duration and delay time of the STED pulse were given.
Optimization of high-order harmonic by genetic algorithm for the chirp and phase of few-cycle pulses
Resumo:
The brightness of a particular harmonic order is optimized for the chirp and initial phase of the laser pulse by genetic algorithm. The influences of the chirp and initial phase of the excitation pulse on the harmonic spectra are discussed in terms of the semi-classical model including the propagation effects. The results indicate that the harmonic intensity and cutoff have strong dependence on the chirp of the laser pulse, but slightly on its initial phase. The high-order harmonics can be enhanced by the optimal laser pulse and its cutoff can be tuned by optimization of the chirp and initial phase of the laser pulse.

The generation of attosecond pulses in a two-level system with permanent dipole moment is investigated. It is shown due to the presence of permanent dipole moments, that the plateau of the high-order harmonic generation spectrum can be extended to X-ray range. Moreover, attosecond pulses with higher intensity can be synthesized by using both even and odd harmonics because of their quantum interference. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The phase-matching condition of high-order harmonic generation driven by intense few-cycle pulses could be controlled by adding second-harmonic pulses to change the ionization fraction of the gaseous medium. The harmonic generation efficiency could be improved by moving the phase-matching point with an all-optical control of the ionization fraction or a proper change of the confocal parameter. A specific order of harmonics could be easily controlled to reach phase matching at a fixed higher gas pressure by adding second-harmonic pulses with a suitable intensity. Such an all-optical phase-matching control was demonstrated to be dependent upon the temporal delay between the fundamental-wave and second harmonic pulses.

Illumination of an optically levitated particle with an intensity-modulated transverse beam induces a transverse vibration of a particle in an optical trap. Based on this, the trapping force of a trap can be measured. Using an intensity-modulated longitudinal levitating beam causes a particle to move vertically, allowing for the determination of some aerodynamic parameters of a particle in air. The principles and the experimental phenomena are described and the initial results are given. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

We propose a united theory that describes the two-center recording system by taking scattering noise into account. The temporal evolution of the signal-to-noise ratio in doubly doped photorefractive crystals is described based on jointly solving material equations and coupled-wave equations with the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Roles of microcosmic optical parameters of dopants on the signal-to-noise ratio are discussed in detail. The theoretical results can confirm and predict experimental results. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. A novel second-order polarization-independent filter made of a single ring resonator and a Sagnac interferometer (SRRSI) is proposed, and its filtering characteristics are investigated. By using birefringence in waveguide, a single ring resonator can be used to synthesize a filter with second-order response. Analytical formulas are derived for characteristics of the SRRSI varied with waveguide parameters.. such as the coupling coefficient; and the critical condition of a second-order Butterworth filter is given. The influence of loss in the ring resonator is also analyzed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Simultaneous phase-shifting ellipsometry based on a grating beamsplitter is presented. In the corresponding setup, an orthogonal grating and analyzer array are used. The latter is composed of four separate analyzers arranged in a 2x2 grid, the polarization axes of which are set to 0, 45, 90, and 135 deg. A mask allows only four diffracted beams of the fist order, having the same optical intensities, to pass. Each beam is incident on one of the analyzers of the array. The intensities of the four beams are simultaneously detected by a quadrant detector. The ellipsometric parameters are obtained using the four intensity signals. The feasibility of simultaneous phase shifting ellipsometry is thus demonstrated. (C) 2008 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

On the basis of the space-time Wigner distribution function (STWDF), we use the matrix formalism to study the propagation laws for the intensity moments of quasi-monochromatic and polychromatic pulsed paraxial beams. The advantages of this approach are reviewed. Also, a least-squares fitting method for interpreting the physical meaning of the effective curvature matrix is described by means of the STWDF. Then the concept is extended to the higher-order situation, and what me believe is a novel technique for characterizing the beam phase is presented. Spatiotemporal instabilities in nonlinear Kerr media with arbitrary higher-order dispersions are studied by use of standard linear-stability analysis. A generic expression for instability growth rate that unifies and expands on previous results for temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporal instabilities is obtained. It is shown that all odd-order dispersions contribute nothing to instability, whereas all even-order dispersions not only affect the conventional instability regions but may also lead to the appearance of new instability regions. The role of fourth-order dispersion in spatiotemporal instabilities is studied exemplificatively to demonstrate the generic results. Numerical simulations confirm the obtained analytic results. A set of recursive formulas for diffractive optical plates design is described. The pure-phase plates simulated by this method homogeneously concentrate more than 96% of the incident laser energy in the desired focal-plane region. The intensity focal-plane profile fits a lath-order super-Gaussian function and has a nearly perfect flat top. Its fit to the required profile measured in the mean square error is 3.576 x 10(-3). The three-dimensional distribution of light intensity that is modulated by a pure phase-shifting apodizer is studied. Results show that the Strehl ratio can be altered by the proposed apodizer and by the waist width of incident Gaussian beams. By changing geometrical parameters of the proposed apodizer, we can increase the focal depth to several times that of the original system. The proposed apodizer can also be used to realize focal splitting and local minimum of intensity, which may be advantageous for constructing an optical trap. Furthermore, the local minimum of intensity number is tunable by changing the parameters of the apodizer. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America
