Zinc oxide (ZnO) films with c-oriented were grown on fused quartz glass substrates at room temperature using dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The as-grown films were annealed at 700 degrees C in air and bombarded by ion beam, respectively. The effects of post-treatments on the structural and optical properties of the ZnO films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), optical transmittance and absorption measurements. The XRD spectra indicate that the crystal quality of ZnO films has been improved by both the post-treatments. Compared with the as-grown sample, both annealed and bombarded samples exhibited blueshift in the UV emission peaks, and a strong green emission was found in the annealed ZnO film. In both optical transmittance and absorption spectra, a blueshift of the band-gap edge was observed in the bombarded film, while a redshift was observed in the annealed film. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. We perform first-principles calculations of electronic structure and optical properties for UO2 and PuO2 based on the density functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) + U scheme. The main features in orbital-resolved partial density of states for occupied f and p orbitals, unoccupied d orbitals, and related gaps are well reproduced compared to experimental observations. Based on the satisfactory ground-state electronic structure calculations, the dynamical dielectric function and related optical spectra, i.e., the reflectivity, adsorption coefficient, energy-loss, and refractive index spectrum, are obtained. These results are consistent with the available experiments.

The guided modes of a two-dimensional photonic crystal straight waveguide and a waveguide bend are studied in order to find the high transmission mechanism for the waveguide bend. We find that high transmission occurs when the mode patterns and wave numbers match, while the single-mode condition in the waveguide bend is not necessarily required. According to the mechanism, a simply modified bend structure with broad high transmission band is proposed. The bandwidth is significantly increased from 19 to 116 nm with transmission above 90%, and covers the entire C band of optical communication.

Employing the metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) technique, we prepare ZnO samples with different morphologies from the film to nanorods through conveniently changing the bubbled diethylzinc flux (BDF) and the carrier gas flux of oxygen (OCGF). The scanning electron microscope images indicate that small BDF and OCGF induce two-dimensional growth while the large ones avail quasi-one-dimensional growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering analyses show that all of the morphology-dependent ZnO samples are of high crystal quality with a c-axis orientation. From the precise shifts of the 2 theta. locations of ZnO (002) face in the XRD patterns and the E-2(high) locations in the Raman spectra, we deduce that the compressive stress forms in the ZnO samples and is strengthened with the increasing BDF and OCGF. Photoluminescence spectroscopy results show all the samples have a sharp ultraviolet luminescent band without any defects-related emission. Upon the experiments a possible growth mechanism is proposed.

A passively mode-locked diode end-pumped YVO4/Nd:YVO4 composite crystal laser with a five-mirror folded cavity was first demonstrated in this paper by using a low temperature semiconductor saturable absorber mirror grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Both the Q-switching and continuous-wave mode locking operation were realized experimentally. A stable averaged output power of 10.15 W with pulse width of about 11.2-ps at a repetition rate of 113 MHz was obtained, and the optical-to-optical efficiency of 43% was achieved.

A passively mode-locked all-solid-state YVO4/Nd:YVO4 composite crystal laser was realized with a low temperature (LT) In0.25Ga0.75As semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. The saturable absorber was used as nonlinear absorber and output coupler simultaneously. Both the Q-switch and continous-wave mode locking operation were experimentally realized. At a pump power of 4 W, the Q-switched mode locking changed to continuous wave mode locking. An average output power of 4.1 W with 5 ps pulse width was achieved at the pump power of 12 W, corresponding to an optical-optical conversion efficiency of 34.2%.

We report the effects of accumulated strain by stacking on the surface and optical properties of stacked 1.3 mu m InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) structures grown by MOCVD. It is found that the surface of the stacked QD structures becomes more and more undulated with stacking, due to the increased strain in the stacked QD structures with stacking. The photoluminescence intensity from the QD structures first increases as the stacking number increases from 1 to 3 and then dramatically decreases as it further increases, implying a significant increase in the density of crystal defects in the stacked QD structures due to the accumulated strain. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the strain can be reduced by simply introducing annealing steps just after growing the GaAs spacers during the deposition of the stacked QD structures, leading to significant improvement in the surface and optical properties of the structures. Based on the modified dual core structure, three kinds of special photonic crystal fibers are presented, which are extremely large negative dispersion, super-broad bond, and large area made field dispersion-compensating photonic crystal fibers (DCPCF). For extremely large negative dispersion DCPCF, the peak of negative dispersion reaches -5.9 x 10(4) ps/(mn km). Super-broad bond DCPCF has broadband large negative dispersion and the dispersion value varies linearly from -380 ps/(nm km) to -420 ps/(nm km) in the C band. The designed large area made field DCPCF has a peak dispersion of -1203 ps/(nm km) with the inner core mode area of 47 mu m(2) and outer core mode area of 835 mu m(2). Furthermore, for the large area mode field DCPCF, the experimental result is also obtained. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Hall effect, Raman scattering, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), optical absorption (OA), mass spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction have been used to study bulk ZnO single crystal grown by a closed chemical vapor transport method. The results indicate that shallow donor impurities (Ga and Al) are the dominant native defects responsible for n-type conduction of the ZnO single crystal. PL and OA results suggest that the as-grown and annealed ZnO samples with poor lattice perfection exhibit strong deep level green photoluminescence and weak ultraviolet luminescence. The deep level defect in as-grown ZnO is identified to be oxygen vacancy. After high-temperature annealing, the deep level photoluminescence is suppressed in ZnO crystal with good lattice perfection. In contrast, the photoluminescence is nearly unchanged or even enhanced in ZnO crystal with grain boundary or mosaic structure. This result indicates that a trapping effect of the defect exists at the grain boundary in ZnO single crystal. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We designed a two-dimensional coupled photonic crystal resonator array with hexagonal lattice. The calculation by plane-wave-expansion method shows that the dispersion curve of coupled cavity modes in the bandgap are much flattened in all directions in the reciprocal space. We simulated the transmission spectra of transverse electric (TE) wave along the Gamma K direction. Compared with the PC single cavity structure, the transmission ratio of the coupled cavity array increases more than three orders of magnitude, while the group velocity decreases to below 1/10, reaching 0.007c. The slow wave effect has potential application in the field of miniaturized tunable optical delay components and low-threshold photonic crystal lasers.

On the metalorganic chemical vapour deposition growth of AlN, by adjusting H-2+N-2 mixture gas components, we can gradually control island dimension. During the Volmer - Weber growth, the 2-dimensional coalescence of the islands induces an intrinsic tensile stress. Then, this process can control the in-plane stress: with the N-2 content increasing from 0 to 3 slm, the in-plane stress gradually changes from 1.5 GPa tensile stress to - 1.2GPa compressive stress. Especially, with the 0.5 slm N-2 + 2.5 slm H-2 mixture gas, the in-plane stress is only 0.1 GPa, which is close to the complete relaxation state. Under this condition, this sample has good crystal and optical qualities.

The transient optical nonlinearity of a nematic liquid crystal doped with azo-dye DR19 is examined. The optical reorientation threshold of a 25-mu m-thick planar-aligned sample of 5CB using a 50 ns pulse duration 532 nm YAG laser pulse is observed to decrease from 800 mJ/mm(2) to 0.6 mJ/mm(2) after the addition of 1 vol% azo dopant, a reduction of three orders of magnitude. When using a laser pulse duration of 10 ns, no such effect is observed. Experimental results indicate that the azo dopant molecules undergo photoisomerization from trans-isomer to cis-isomer under exposure to light, and this conformation change reorients the 5CB molecules via intermolecular coupling between guest and host. This guest-host coupling also affects the azo photoisomerization process.

In this work, we present the design of an integrated photonic-crystal polarization beam splitter (PC-PBS) and a low-loss photonic-crystal 60 waveguide bend. Firstly, the modal properties of the PC-PBS and the mechanism of the low-loss waveguide bend are investigated by the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and then the integration of the two devices is studied. It shows that, although the individual devices perform well separately, the performance of the integrated circuit is poor due to the multi-mode property of the PC-PBS. By introducing deformed airhole structures, a single-mode PC-PBS is proposed, which significantly enhance the performance of the circuit with the extinction ratios remaining above 20dB for both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations. Both the specific result and the general idea of integration design are promising in the photonic crystal integrated circuits in the future. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

The reduced divergence angle of the photonic crystal vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (PC-VCSEL) was investigated in both theory and experiment. The photonic crystal waveguide possessed the weakly guiding waveguide characteristic, which accounted for the reduction of the divergence angle. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method was used to simulate the designed PC-VCSEL, and a calculated divergence angle of 5.2 degrees was obtained. The measured divergence angles of our fabricated PC-VCSEL were between 5.1 degrees and 5.5 degrees over the entire drive current range, consistent with the numerical results. This is the lowest divergence angle of the fabricated PC-VCSEL ever reported.

InN thin films with different thicknesses are grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition, and the dislocations, electrical and optical properties are investigated. Based on the model of mosaic crystal, by means of X-ray diffraction skew geometry scan, the edge dislocation densities of 4.2 x 10(10) cm(-2) and 6.3 x 10(10) cm(-2) are fitted, and the decrease of twist angle and dislocation density in thicker films are observed. The carrier concentrations of 9 x 10(18) cm(-3) and 1.2 x 10(18) cm(-3) are obtained by room temperature Hall effect measurement. V-N is shown to be the origin of background carriers, and the dependence of concentration and mobility on film thickness is explained. By the analysis of S-shape temperature dependence of photoluminescence peak, the defects induced carrier localization is suggested be involved in the photoluminescence. Taking both the localization and energy band shrinkage effect into account, the localization energies of 5.05 meV and 5.58 meV for samples of different thicknesses are calculated, and the decrease of the carrier localization effect in the thicker sample can be attributed to the reduction of defects.
