Er3+ -doped Gd2SiO5 (Er:GSO) single crystal with dimensions of circle divide 35 x 40 mm(3) has been grown by the Czochralski method. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of the Er:GSO crystal were measured at room temperature. The spectral parameters were calculated based on Judd-Ofelt theory, and the intensity parameters Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega 6 are obtained to be 6.168 x 10(-20), 1.878 x 10(-20), and 1.255 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The emission cross-section has been calculated by Fuechtbauer-Ladenbury formula. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The YAG crystal codoped with Yb3+ and Tm3+ has been grown by Czochralski (Cz) method. The crystal structure of the crystal has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption and emission spectra of Yb,Tm:YAG crystal at room temperature have also been studied. The emission cross-sections have been calculated by Fuechtbauer-Ladenburg formula and reciprocity method. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline Zn0.95 - xNi0.05AlxO (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.10) diluted magnetic semiconductors have been synthesized by an auto-combustion method. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that all Al-doped Zn0.95Ni0.05O samples have the pure wurtzite structure. Transmission electron microscope analyses show that the as-synthesized powders are of the size 40 - 45 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray photoemission spectroscope analyses indicate that Ni2+ and Al3+ uniformly substitute Zn2+ in the wurtzite structure without forming any secondary phases. The Al doping concentration dependences of cell parameters (a and c), resistance and the ratio of green emission to UV emission have the similar trends. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nonpolar a-plane (1120) ZnO thin films have been fabricated on gamma-LiAlO2 (302) substrates via the low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. An obvious intensity variation of the E-2 mode in the Raman spectra indicates that there exhibits in-plane optical anisotropy in the a-plane ZnO thin films. Highly-oriented uniform grains of rectangular shape can be seen from the atomic force microscopy images, which mean that the lateral growth rate of the thin films is also anisotropic. It is demonstrated experimentally that a buffer layer deposited at a low temperature (200 degrees C) can improve the structural and optical properties of the epilayer to a large extent. We report the structural and optical properties of nonpolar m-plane GaN and GaN-based LEDs grown by MOCVD on a gamma-LiAlO2 (100) substrate. The TMGa, TMIn and NH3 are used as sources of Ga, In and N, respectively. The structural and surface properties of the epilayers are characterized by x-ray diffraction, polarized Raman scattering and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films have a very smooth surface with rms roughness as low as 2nm for an area of 10 x 10 mu m(2) by AFM scan area. The XRD spectra show that the materials grown on gamma-LiAlO2 (100) have < 1 - 100 > m-plane orientation. The EL spectra of the m-plane InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells LEDs are shown. This demonstrates that our nonpolar LED structure grown on the gamma-LiAlO2 substrate is indeed free of internal electric field. The current voltage characteristics of these LEDs show the rectifying behaviour with a turn on voltage of 1-3 V.

Ternary CoNiP nanowire (NW) arrays have been synthesized by electrochemical deposition inside the nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The CoNiP NWs deposited at room temperature present soft magnetic properties, with both parallel and perpendicular coercivities less than 500 Oe. In contrast, as the electrolyte temperature (T-elc) increases from 323 to 343 K, the NWs exhibit hard magnetic properties with coercivities in the range of 1000-2500 Oe. This dramatic increase in coercivities can be attributed to the domain wall pinning that is related to the formation of Ni and Co nanocrystallites and the increase of P content. The parallel coercivity (i.e. the applied field perpendicular to the membrane surface) maximum as high as 2500 Oe with squareness ratio up to 0.8 is achieved at the electrolyte temperature of 328 K. It has been demonstrated that the parallel coercivity of CoNiP NWs can be tuned in a wide range of 200-2500 Oe by controlling the electrolyte temperature, providing an easy way to control magnetic properties and thereby for their integration with magnetic-micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). The 2 at.% Sm:GdVO4 crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. The segregation coefficient of Sm3+ ion in this crystal is 0.98. The crystal structure of the Sm:GdVO4 crystal was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Judd-Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters (Omega(i)), the spontaneous emission probability, the luminary branching ratio and the radiative lifetime of the state (4)G(5/2). The stimulated emission cross-sections at 567, 604 and 646 nm are calculated to be 5.92 x 10(-21), 7.62 x 10(-21) and 5.88 x 10(-21) cm(2), respectively. The emission cross-section at 604 nm is 4.4 times lager than that in Sm: YAP at 607 nm. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mg0.4Al2.4O4 single crystals with good optical quality were successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The transmission spectrum indicated that the absorption edge of the crystal was at 220nm, while no apparent absorption peaks were found. The X-ray diffraction and DSC curve analysis showed that Mg0.4Al2.4O4 crystal was stable at room temperature. While after annealing in the air and hydrogen atmosphere at about 1200 degrees C,Mg0.4Al2.4O4 decomposed into Al2O3 and (MgO)(0.4)(Al2O3)(x) (0.4 < x < 1.2). The reaction mainly occurred on the crystal surface, barely inside. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
