The conformational transition of DNA induced by the interaction between DNA and a cationic lipid vesicle, didodecyidimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), had been investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and UV spectroscopy methods. We used singular value decomposition least squares method (SVDLS) to analyze the experimental CD spectra. Although pH value influenced the conformation of DNA in solution, the results showed that upon binding to double helical DNA, positively charged liposomes induced a conformational transition of DNA molecules from the native B-form to more compact conformations. At the same time, no obvious conformational changes occurred at single-strand DNA (ssDNA). While the cationic lipid vesicles and double-strand DNA (dsDNA) were mixed at a high molar ratio of DDAB vesicles to dsDNA, the conformation of dsDNA transformed from the B-form to the C-form resulting in an increase in duplex stability (DeltaT(m) = 8 +/- 0.4 degreesC). An increasing in T-m was also observed while the cationic lipid vesicles interacted with ssDNA.

A series of homopolyimides and copolyimides was synthesized by the solution condensation of biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) isomers and various diamines followed by chemical imidization. These polyimides had intermediate to high molecular weights with inherent viscosities of 0.34-1.01 dL/g for homopolyimides and 0.48-1.02 dL/g for copolyimides. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the aromatic polyimides were stable up to 500degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 506-597degreesC in an air atmosphere and in the range of 517-601degreesC in a nitrogen atmosphere, depending on the diamines used. The glass transition temperatures of aromatic homopolyimides were above 271degreesC, while the glass transition temperatures of the copolyimides increased with an increase in the 2, 2', 3, 3'-BPDA-component. The effects of the chemical structure of the polymer chain on the solubility were investigated. It was found that the solubility of BPDA-based polyimides could be improved by the introduction of flexible units, nonlinear and non-coplanar units, and copolymerization. The polyimides with nonlinear and non-coplanar units derived from 2, 2', 3, 3'-BPDA appeared to have prominently enhanced solubility in polar aprotic solvents and polychlorocarbons when compared with the homopolyimide derived from 3, 3', 4, 4'-BPDA.

DNA interaction with cationic lipids promises to be a versatile and effective synthetic transfection agent. This paper presents the study on binding of a simple artifical cationic lipid, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), to calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) prior to the condensation process, taking methyl green (MG) as a probe. The results show that the CTAB binds to DNA through electrostatic interaction forming a hydrophobic complex, thus changing the micro-environment of duplex of DNA, so the binding state of MG and DNA is changed, and a complex CTAB-CT DNA-MG is formed. This fact suggests a new way to mediate the conformation of molecular assemblies of DNA and lipids. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Poly(ether ketone ether ketone ketone) containing meta-phenylene linkage (PEKEKK(T/I)) was synthesized by electrophilic Friedel-Crafts acylation condensation of 1, 4-diphenoxybenzophenone with terephthaloyl chloride (T) and isophthaloyl chloride (I) with a T/I ratio of 1 and characterized by LR,DSC,TGA and WAXD. PEKEKK(T/I) has two different crystal structures: a conventional Farm I structure, the same as that observed in PEEK and PEK, wich is usually developed from melt crystallization, and a new Form II structure which can be developed from cold crystallization or solvent induced crystallization (by exposing the glassy sample to methylene chloride).

Thin films of an organo-soluble polyimide based on 1,4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) have been studied. A prism coupler was used to measure the refractive indices. The average refractive indices of thin films prepared by annealing at different temperatures and times were chosen to characterize the condensation states of thin films. Thin films annealed at 200 degrees C show irreversible changes in physical properties, eg solubility. FTIR spectroscopy showed that the chain structures of the above thin films remained unchanged. It is proposed that specific molecular interactions induce the irreversible changes revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

Two kinds of novel macrocyclic aryl thioether ether oligomers were synthesized by nucleophilic condensation reaction in high yields under pseudo-high-dilution condition. A combination of H-1 NMR, GPC and MALDI-TOF MS analyses unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature and their distributions, Macrocyclic thioether ether ketone oligomers can undergo facile melt ring opening polymerization(ROP) initiated by thiyl radical to give a high molecular weight polymer.

Two new blue light-emitting PPV-based conjugated copolymers containing both an electron-withdrawing unit (triazole-TAZ) and electron-rich moieties (carbazole-CAR and bicarbazole-BCAR) were prepared by Wittig condensation polymerization between the triazole diphosphonium salt and the corresponding dialdehyde monomers. Their structures and properties were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, PL spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. The resulting copolymers are soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable with a T-g of 147degreesC for TAZ-CAR-PPV and of 157degreesC for TAZ-BCAR-PPV. The maximum photoluminescence wavelengths of TAZ-CAR-PPV and TAZ-BCAR-PPV film appear at 460 nm and 480 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry measurement demonstrates that TAZ-BCAR-PPV has good electrochemical reversibility, while TAZ-CAR-PPV exhibits the irreversible redox process. The triazole unit was found to be an effective pi-conjugation interrupter and can play the rigid spacer role in determining the emission colour of the resulting copolymer.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. A series of main-chain Liquid-crystalline ionomers containing sulfonate groups pendant on the polymer backbone were synthesized by an interfacial condensation reaction of 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha,alpha'-dimethyl benzalazine, a mesogenic monomer, with brilliant yellow (BY), a sulfonate-containing monomer, and a 1/9 mixture of terephthaloyl and sebacoyl dichloride. The structures of the polymers were characterized by LR and UV spectroscopies. DSC and thermogravimetric analysis were used to measure the thermal properties of those polymers, and the mesogenic properties were characterized by a polarized optical microscope, DSC, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The ionomers were thermally stable to about 310 degreesC. They were thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) with high mesomorphic-phase transition temperatures and exhibited broad nematic mesogenic regions of 160-170 degreesC, and they were lyotropic LCPs with willowy leaf-shaped textures in sulfuric acid. However, the thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties were somewhat weakened because the concentration of BY was more than 8%. The inherent viscosity in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone suggested that intramolecular associations of sulfonate groups occurred at low concentration, and intermolecular associations predominated at higher concentration. A series of alternating copolymers containing triphenylamine (TPA) moieties and oligomeric PPV segments in the main chain have been synthesized by Wittig condensation. The resulting polymers exhibit good thermal stability with decomposition temperatures (Tds) above 305 degreesC under nitrogen at 10 degreesC/min, and high glass transition temperatures (Tgs). They show intense photoluminescence in solution and film. The single-layer electroluminescent device using TAA-PV1 as emissive layer emits green light at 522nm with a turn-on voltage of 6V and maximum brightness of about 200cd/m(2) at 20V.

MCM-41-hosted fluorescein mesophase was prepared by addition of the dye into the sol-gel mixture for the synthesis of MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve under microwave radiation. The as-synthesized organo-silica-surfactant material possessed hexagonal mesostructure with short-range symmetry and a uniform nanosize of about 30 nm. Furthermore, fluorescence spectrum, increase in lifetime and lack of aggregation at high concentration were discussed in terms of the effect of the host-guest interaction on these properties. Novel macrocyclic oligomers were synthesized through the condensation of phenolphthalein and m-phthaloyl-dichloride with triethylamine as catalyst in the mixed solution of methylene chloride and THF via pseudo-high-dilution technique. The oligomers were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, MS, WAXD, TGA and DSC. It was found that the 3 : 3 adduct (molar ratio of phenolphthalein to m-phthaloyl-dichloride) and the 4 : 4 adduct were the main products and there was a small amount of crystalline in the macrocyclic mixtures. When the mixtures were heated to 360 degrees C, the crystalline disappeared.

New aromatic diamines [(1) and (2)] containing polycycloalkane structures between two benzene rings were synthesized by HCl-catalyzed condensation reaction of aniline hydrochloride and corresponding polycycloalkanone derivatives. The structures of diamines were identified by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The polyimides were synthesized from the obtained diamines with various aromatic dianhydrides by one-step polymerization in m-cresol. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polyimides were in the range of 0.34-1.02 dL/g. The polyimides showed good thermal stabilities and solubility. All the polymers were readily soluble in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, m-cresol, tetrachloroethane, etc. Some of them were soluble even in chloroform at room temperature. The glass transition temperatures were observed in the range of 323-363 degrees C, and all of the polymers were stable up to 400 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Because of the extremely sensitivity to the local environment of the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ion, the fluorescence of Eu3+ ions was Studied by introducing Eu3+ ions to TiO2 gel by the sol-gel method, from which the structural changes of TiO2 gel were characterized. The results showed that the intensity of D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition increased with the increasement of heat treatment temperature, which indicated the evaporation of molecular water and the completeness of the condensation reaction. Because of the quenching of the fluorescence induced by the cluster of Eu3+ ions, the addition of Al3+ ions greatly enhanced the emission intensity of Eu3+ ion.

A dicarboxylic acid, N,N'-hexane-1,6-diylbis(trimellitimide), was prepared by the reaction of trimellitic anhydride with 1,6-hexane diamine. From the diacid, a series of copoly(ester imide)s had been synthesized by thermal condensation with p-hydroxybenzoic acid and diphenols with different structures. Properties of the resulting copoly(ester imide)s were characterized by polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Most of the copoly(ester imide)s formed a nematic phase over a wide temperature range above their melt. The effects of the copoly(ester imide)s composition and the structures of diphenols on the temperature related to liquid crystalline transition were investigated.
