LaC2 (with doublet and quartet states) and LaC2+ (with singlet and triplet states) cluster have been studied by using the B3LYP (Becke three-parameter/Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method and the HF (Hartree-Fock) method with LANLIDZ basis set. For each cluster, four possible isomers in C-2v, C-s, C-proportional to v and D-proportional to h symmetries have been investigated. The results indicate that structures in C-s symmetry are local minima in all cases and, in most cases (particularly for high spin states), our initial guess in C-s symmetry converges to structures in C-2v symmetry. For the isomers in C-2v, C-proportional to v and D-proportional to h symmetries, local minima were found to be dependent on the method and spin state. The two clusters may also exist as linear chains. The ordering of the binding energies for the isomers in all spin states is C-s similar to C-2v < C-proportional to v < D-proportional to h. The ionization potential of LaC2 is reported as well. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Three new oxides Ln(2)MCo(2)O(7) (Ln = Sm, Gd; M = Sr, Ba) have been synthesized in solid state reaction method. The powder X-ray diffraction spectra show that they are all isostructural with Sr3Ti2O7. The electrical resistivities in the temperature range 300-1100 K show that they are all semiconductors, and a transition to metals is observed at 1053, 1053, and 573 K for Sm2SrCo2O7, Gd2SrCo2O7, and Sm2BaCo2O7, respectively. The magnetic suspectivities of Gd2SrCo2O7 in the temperature range 300-673 K fit the Curie-Weiss law well. A plateau is observed in the curves of Sm(2)MCo(2)O(7) (M = Sr, Ba) which is attributed to the configuration state change of Co(III) from low spin to high spin. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

The paramagnetic susceptibility of lanthanum manganite has been measured over a wide temperature range (100-1073 K). On the basis of the thermodynamic equilibria between the various manganese ions with different valence and spin states and the magnetic interactions between the various manganese ions, a semiempirical formula has been proposed to calculate the paramagnetic susceptibilities of lanthanum manganite at different temperatures. The results indicate that most of the discrepancies between the calculated and experimental reciprocal susceptibilities of lanthanum manganite are less than 10% and that the relative contents of the various manganese ions in lanthanum manganite vary with temperature. The relative content of the trivalent manganese ion with a high spin state is dominant over the whole temperature range, while be relative content of the tetravalent manganese ion with a high spin state decreases monotonously with increasing temperature. At 300 K the calculated relative content of the tetravalent manganese ion in lanthanum manganite is about 34%, which is in good agreement with the experimental result (30%). There are some divalent manganese ions present in lanthanum manganite from low temperature to high temperature. The ratio of the relative contents of the tetravalent and divalent manganese ions in the compound varies with temperature. Above 750 K the relative content of the tetravalent manganese ion is less than that of the divalent manganese ion. The variation in the electrical resistivity of lanthanum manganite with temperature has also been interpreted reasonably.

Three novel metal (II) phthalocyanine complexes were synthesized by cyclic tetramerisation reaction of a dicyano benzene component and different metal ions (Pd2+, Co2+, Zn2+). The structure of complexes was confirmed by elemental analysis, mass and IR spectrum. The excellent solubility of the complexes in benzene enabled us to obtain films by a spin-coating method. The films were characterized by IR, electronic spectral and AFM. The gas sensing properties to NO2 of the metal (II) phthalocyanine complex films were studied. In addition, the effects of different metal ions and the gas sensing temperature on the sensing properties were studied. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

By utilizing time-resolved Kerr rotation techniques, we have investigated the spin dynamics of a high-mobility low density two-dimensional electron gas in a GaAs/Al0.35Ga0.65As heterostructure in the dependence on temperature from 1.5 to 30 K. It is found that the spin relaxation/dephasing time under a magnetic field of 0.5 T exhibits a maximum of 3.12 ns around 14 K, which is superimposed on an increasing background with rising temperature. The appearance of the maximum is ascribed to that at the temperature where the crossover from the degenerate to the nondegenerate regime takes place, electron-electron Coulomb scattering becomes strongest, and thus inhomogeneous precession broadening due to the D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism becomes weakest. These results agree with the recent theoretical predictions [J. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. B 15, 045305 (2007)], which verify the importance of electron-electron Coulomb scattering to electron spin relaxation/dephasing.

We report on time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements of spin coherence of electrons in the first excited subband of a high-mobility low-density two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/Al0.35Ga0.65As heterostructure. While the transverse spin lifetime (T-2(*)) of electrons decreases monotonically with increasing magnetic field, it has a nonmonotonic dependence on the temperature and reaches a peak value of 596 ps at 36 K, indicating the effect of intersubband electron-electron scattering on the electron-spin relaxation.

Shubnikov-de Haas measurements were carried out for In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1-xAs metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor structures grown on GaAs substrates with different indium contents and/or different Si delta-doping concentrations. Zero-field (B-->0) spin splitting was found in samples with stronger conduction band bending in the InGaAs well. It was shown that the dominant spin splitting mechanism is attributed to the contribution by the Rashba term. We found that zero-field spin splitting not only occurs in the ground electron subband, but also in the first excited electron subband for a sample with Si delta-doping concentration of 6x10(12) cm(-2). We propose that this In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1-xAs metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor structure grown on GaAs may be a promising candidate spin-polarized field-effect transistors. An organic light-emitting diode fabricated by doping a europium, complex tris(dibiphenoylmethane)-mono (phenanthroline)-europium (Eu(DBPM)(3) (Phen)) into polymer poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene) and poly(N-carbazole) was realized by spin coating. Comparison with other europium complexes, due to the existence of a larger spectral overlap between Eu(DBPM)(3)(Phen) and poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4phenylene), a high efficiency red emission was achieved. The device showed a turn-on voltage of 5.2 V The maximum efficiency reached 0.47 cd/A at luminance of 50 cd/m(2). The maximum luminance can reach 150 cd/m(2) at 95 mA/cm(2). To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the best results based on europium complexes by spin-casting method.

A kind of 1,6,10,15,19,24,28,33-octa-iso-pentyloxy-2,3-metallonaphthalocyanines complexes MNc(iso-PeO)(8) (M = Co, Cu, Pd) are used as spincoating film-forming materials. The surface morphologies of the films prepared were studied first. These films were then used for the experiments of NO2 sensing. The effects of sensing temperature as well as the NO concentration on the sensing properties were studied. The experimental results showed that the three MNc(iso-PeO)(8) films were uniform, smooth and dense. Due to the different metal ions (M) on the center of naphthalocyanine, the CoNc(iso-PeO)(8) film had a higher film resistance and response-recovery rate in the NO2 sensing experiments. On the contrary, the response to NO2 of the PdNc(iso-PeO)(8) and CuNc(iso-PeO)(8) films were superior to that of CoNc(iso-PeO)(8). By varying the sensing temperature, it was found that the elevation of sensing temperature could improve the sensing response, recovery ratio, and sensitivity of the sensing films. At high concentrations of NO2, the response time became shorter. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Smooth thin films of three kinds of nickel(II)-azo complexes were prepared by the spin-coating method. Absorption spectra of the thin films on K9 glass substrate in the 300-600 nn wavelength region were measured. Optical constants (complex refractive index N = n + ik) and thickness of the thin films prepared on single-crystal silicon substrate in the 300-600 nm wavelength region were investigated on rotating analyzer-polarizer type of scanning ellipsometer, and dielectric constants epsilon (epsilon = epsilon(1) + i epsilon(2)), absorption coefficients a as well as reflectance R of thin films were then calculated at 405 nm. In addition, in order to examine the possible use of nickel(II)-azo complex thin film as an optical recording medium, one of the nickel(II)-azo complex thin film prepared on K9 glass substrate with an Ag reflective layer was also studied by atomic force microscopy and static optical recording. The results show that the nickel(II)-azo complex thin film is smooth and has a root mean square surface roughness of 2.25 nm, and the recording marks on the nickel(II)-azo complex thin film are very clear and circular, and their size can reach 200 nn or less. Spin-coated films of nickel 1,6,10,15,19,24,28,33-octa-iso-pentyloxy-2,3-naphthalocyanine complex were obtained and characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. A linear relationship between the absorbance and solution concentration was observed. Low concentration solutions could afford smooth and homogeneous film surfaces as indicated by atomic force microscopy. The film structure was studied by small angle X-ray diffraction. The films were used for NO2 sensing experiments. The results indicate that the elevation of sensing temperature can shorten the response time and increase recovery ratio and response magnitude of the sensing films. High NO2 concentration can also shorten response time. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The temperature dependence of hole spin relaxation time in both neutral and n-doped ultrathin InAs monolayers has been investigated. It has been suggested that D'yakonov-Perel (DP) mechanism dominates the spin relaxation process at both low and high temperature regimes. The appearance of a peak in temperature dependent spin relaxation time reveals the important contribution of Coulomb scatterings between carriers to the spin kinetics at low temperature, though electron-phonon scattering becomes dominant at higher temperatures. Increased electron screening effect in the n-doped sample has been suggested to account for the shortened spin relaxation time compared with the undoped one. The results suggest that hole spins are also promising for building solid-state qubits.
