A one-meter long column packed with silica gel is used to separate light hydrocarbons. The silica gel has been modified with several kinds of gas chromatography stationary phases. Among these, PEG 2000 shows fairly good effect when using 80-100 meshes silica gel for the separation of mixture of methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, propane, propylene and n-, i-butane. The different behavior of silica gel between batch to batch is also found. When silica gel is coated with a small amount of Al2O3 prepared with sol-gel method, better resolution has been observed on a 2-meter column compared with the non-modified silica gel.

A data manipulation method has been developed for automatic peak recognition and result evaluation in the analysis of organic chlorinated hydrocarbons with dual-column gas chromatography. Based on the retention times of two internal standards, pentachlorotoluene and decachlorobiphenyl, the retention times of chlorinated hydrocarbons can be calibrated automatically and accurately. It is very convenient to identify the peaks by comparing the retention times of samples with the calibrated retention times calculated from the relative retention indices of standards. Meanwhile, with a suggested two-step evaluation method the evaluation coefficients and the suitable quantitative results of each component can be automatically achieved for practical samples in an analytical system using two columns with different polarities and two internal standards. A simple method, based on the technique of capillary column switching-back flushing, has been developed for the detailed analysis of aromatic compounds in gasoline. The sample was first separated on a 30-m long OV-2330 polar precolumn and then backflushed onto a nonpolar analytical column. The early eluting components from the precolumn and the components of interest (aromatic compounds plus heavier compounds) eluting from the analytical column are all directed to the same flame ionization detection system through a T piece, which permits the quantitative analysis of aromatic hydrocarbons in gasoline by a normalization method using correcting factors. The switching time window of the method is +/-5 s, resulting in easier operation and higher reliability. The reproducibility of the quantitative analysis was less than or equal to3% RSD for real gasoline samples. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Purely organic and catalytic systems of anthraquinones and N-hydroxyphthalimide efficiently promote oxygenation of hydrocarbons with dioxygen under mild conditions, e.g., fluorene can be converted completely to fluorenone with 85% yield at 80 degreesC.

Naphtha catalytic cracking were carried out at 650 degrees C over modified ZSM-5. Light olefins and BTX could be obtained over the catalysts. The products showed variable distribution with different catalyst modification. Some modification, such as Fe, Cu and La favored the BTX generation and P and Mg modification favored the light olefins production. In N-2 stream cracking catalyzed by LaZSM-5, more than 50% naphtha feed were converted to BTX, while in steam cracking, with an improved modified catalyst, P, La/ZSM-5, naphtha can be converted to light olefins with high activity and long-term stability.
