Poly-ortho-methylanilines (POT) in three states fully oxidized, fully reduced and oxidized in varying degrees were synthesized by the reaction of common POT (C-POT) having nearly equal amounts of benzenediamine and quinonediimine units with iodine or phenyl-hydrazine, and the resulting polymers were characterized by IR, C-13-NMR, SEM and elemental analysis. The results showed that the quinonediimine unit in C-POT could be reduced by phenylhydrazine to the benzenediamine unit, forming the polymer with low OD (oxidation degree) or in a fully reduced state and that iodine-oxidation resulted in the increase of quinonediimine unit and decrease of benzenediamine unit. The solubility and flexibility of the formed polymers depend strongly on the amount of quinonediimine unit in it. It is necessary to reduce the content of quinonediimine structure unit in order to improve the solubility of aniline-class polymers.

A rapid rotation-scan method was used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of H2O2 at a cobalt protoporphyrin modified pyrolytic graphite electrode (CoPP/PG). The rate constant of H2O2 oxidation at the CoPP/PG electrode at different potentials and in different pH solutions was measured. The variation of catalytic activity with reaction charges (Q) passed through the electrode was analyzed. This provided a convenient electrochemical method to study the passivation and poisoning of catalytic sites with time.

A conducting polyaniline (PAn) film modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode was prepared by electrochemical polymerization. The electrochemical behavior of ascorbic acid (AH(2)) in aqueous solution at this PAn modified electrode was studied in detail. The experimental results show that PAn film modified electrode has good electrocatalytic activity on the oxidation of ascorbic acid in aqueous solution over a wide range of pH value, among which pH 4 is the optimum condition. The oxidation process of ascorbic acid at PAn film electrode can be regarded as an EC catalytic mechanism. The kinetic process of the catalytic reaction was investigated by rotating disk electrode (RDE) coated with PAn films. The rate constant of the catalytic reaction was evaluated. The catalytic peak currents are proportional to the concentrations tions of ascorbic acid in the range of 5 x 10(-2)-1 x 10(-6) mol . L-1. The PAn film elec trodes give very stable responce for the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The present investigation shows the posibility of using PAn film modified electrode for the determination of ascorbic acid.

The preparation and the behaviour of a Prussian Blue (PB) film on a platinum microdisk electrode has been described. Electrocatalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid has occurred at the PB film modified microelectrode. This shows a typical example of a modified microelectrode in electrocatalysis following our previous theoretical studies (J. Electroanal. Chem., 309 (1991) 103) and the related catalytic reaction rate constant was determined.

Oxidative dehydroaromatization of propylene was investigated by the pulse technique over two kinds of single oxide catalysts. With the Bi2O3 catalyst, the main dimer product was 1,5-hexadiene, and the dimerization activity was stable to pulse number even if the catalyst was partly reduced to the bulk. With the CeO2 catalyst, benzene was mainly formed instead of 1,5-hexadiene, but the activity decreased rapidly with increasing pulse number, indicating that only the lattice oxygen near the catalyst surface could be used for oxidative dimerization and the further aromatization. The Bi-Ce-O system catalyst was found in this study to give higher aromatization activity and showed better stability, compared to the Bi-Sn-O catalyst. Although the Bi-Ce-O catalyst was only a mixture of the two component oxides from X-ray diffraction analysis, there was a significant combination effect on the selectivity to benzene. The highest and the most stable selectivity of benzene was obtained at Bi/Ce = 1. In the TPD spectrum of Bi-Ce-O catalyst, there are not only the lattice oxygen (beta-oxygen) over 620-degrees-C due to the reduction of Bi2O3, but also a great deal of the alpha-oxygen desorbed about 400-degrees-C, which is considered the absorbed oxygen in the bulk. This absorbed oxygen could probably be a compensation of the lattice oxygen through the route of gaseous --> absorbed --> lattice oxygen in the binary catalyst system. By the kinetic study on the Bi-Ce-O catalyst, the dimer formation rate was the first-order with respect to the partial pressure of propylene and zero-order of oxygen. Although detail investigation would be made further, it was considered that the complete oxidation of propylene would mainly take place parallelly on some different sites, and the rate-determining step of propylene dimerization occurred probably between an adosrbed propylene and a gaseous one by an Eley-Rideal type mechanism.

The kinetics of prussian blue (PB) film itself during the redox process and of the catalytic oxidation of ascorbic acid (AH_2) on it have been studied in detail. The charge transfer diffusion coefficient D_(ct) in PB film is determined as 2.62×10~(-10)cm~2·s~(-1), using potential-step chronoamperometry, chronocoulometry and constant-current chronopotentialmetry, respectively. The rate constant of the cross-exchange reaction between AH_2 in solution and the active centers in PB film is measured in rotating d...

The ignition processes for the catalytic partial oxidation of methane (POM) to synthesis gas over oxidic nickel catalyst (NiO/Al2O3), reduced nickel catalyst (Ni-0/Al2O3), and Pt-promoted oxidic nickel catalyst (Pt-NiO/Al2O3) were studied by the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) technique. The complete oxidation of methane usually took place on the NiO catalyst during the CH4/O-2 reaction, even with a pre-reduced nickel catalyst, and Ni-0 is inevitably first oxidized to NiO if the temperature is below the ignition temperature. It is above a certain temperature that Ni-0 is formed again, which leads to the start of the POM. The POM can be initiated at a much lower temperature on a Pt-NiO catalyst because of Pt promotion of the reduction of NiO. The POM in a fluidized bed can be easily initiated due to the addition of Pt.

The deposition of carbon on catalysts during the partial oxidation of methane to syngas has been investigated in a fluidized bed. It was found that the relative rate of carbon deposition follows the order NiP > >d > Pt, Rh. Although the rate of carbon deposition in the fluidized bed was much lower than that in the fixed bed, carbon deposition could still be detected in the fluidized bed if a CH4/O-2 ratio in greater than 2.3 was used.

Simultaneous NO reduction and CO oxidation in the presence of O-2,H2O and SO2 over Cu/Mg/AUO (Cu-cat), Ce/Mg/Al/O (Ce-cat) and Cu/Ce/Mg/Al/O (CuCe-cat) were studied. At low temperatures (<340 degreesC), the presence of O-2 or H2O enhanced the activity of CuCe-cat for NO and CO conversions, but significantly suppressed the activity of Cu-cat and Ce-cat, At high temperature (720 degreesC), the presence of O-2 or H2O had no adverse effect on the NO and CO conversions over these catalysts. The addition of SO2 to NO + CO + O-2 + H2O system had no effect on the, reaction of CO + O-2 over Cu-cat, but deactivated this catalyst for NO + CO and CO + H2O reactions; over Ce-cat, all of these reactions of NO + CO, CO + O-2 and CO + H2O were suppressed significantly; over CuCe-cat, NO + CO and CO + O-2 reactions were not affected while the reaction of CO + H2O was slightly inhibited. A perovskite-type oxide of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) with mixed electronic and oxygen ionic conductivity at high temperatures was used as an oxygen-permeable membrane. A tubular membrane of BSCFO made by extrusion method has been used in the membrane reactor to exclusively transport oxygen for the partial oxidation of ethane (POE) to syngas with catalyst of LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 at temperatures of 800-900 degreesC. After only 30 min POE reaction in the membrane reactor, the oxygen permeation flux reached at 8.2 ml cm(-2) min(-1). After that, the oxygen permeation flux increased slowly and it took 12 h to reach at 11.0 ml cm(-2) min(-1). SEM and EDS analysis showed that Sr and Ba segregations occurred on the used membrane surface exposed to air while Co slightly enriched on the membrane surface exposed to ethane. The oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing of concentration of C2H6, which was attributed to increasing of the driving force resulting from the more reducing conditions produced with an increase of concentration of C2H6 in the feed gas. The tubular membrane reactor was successfully operated for POE reaction at 875 degreesC for more than 100 h without failure, with ethane conversion of similar to 100%, CO selectivity of >91% and oxygen permeation fluxes of 10-11 ml cm(-2) min(-1). Adsorption and oxidation of chlorobenzene on Al(2)O(3), TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3), and MnO(x)/TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) have been studied by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. At room temperature, chlorobenzene is only physisorbed on Al(2)O(3), TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3), and MnO(x)/TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3), and gives the same IR spectrum as that for liquid-phase chlorobenzene. On Al(2)O(3) no further interaction and reaction take place with treatment, at higher temperatures (up to 773 K), while phenolates are observed for TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) and MnO(x)/TiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) at 773 K. When the adsorbed chlorobenzene coexists with oxygen, formates are detected for Al(2)O(3), while acetates are additionally observed for TiO(2-)Al(2)O(3) above 573 K. For MnO(x)/TiO(2-)Al(2)O(3), maleates are present at 573 And 673 K, while formates and acetates develop at 473 and 573 K. Almost all IR bands due to formates, acetates, and maleates disappear at 773 K, indicating that these oxygen-containing species are potential intermediates for the total oxidation of chlorobenzene.

A dense Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta membrane tube was prepared by the extruding method. Furthermore, a membrane reactor with this tubular membrane was successfully applied to partial oxidation of methane (POM) reaction, in which the separation of oxygen from air and the partial oxidation of methane are integrated in one process. At 875degreesC, 94% of methane conversion, 98% of CO selectivity, 95% of H-2 selectivity, and as high as 8.8 mL/(min (.) cm(2)) of oxygen flux were obtained. In POM reaction condition. the membrane tube shows a very good stability.

An in-situ modified sol-gel method for the preparation of a Ni-based monolith-supported catalyst is reported. With the presence of a proper amount of plasticizer and binder, and at an optimized pH value, the stable boehmite sol was modified with metal ions (Ni, Li, La) successfully without distinct growth of the particle size. Monolith-supported Ni-based/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were obtained using the modified sol as the coating medium with several cycles of dip-coating and calcination. Combined BET, SEM-EDS, XRD and H-2-TPR investigations demonstrated that the derived monolith catalysts had a high specific surface area, a relatively homogeneous surface composition, and a high extent of interaction between the active component and the support. These catalysts showed relatively stable catalytic activities for partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas under atmospheric pressure. The monolith catalysts prepared by this sol-gel method also demonstrated an improved resistance to sintering and loss of the active component during the reaction process.
