Clinopyroxenes of the join CaMgSi2O6(diopside)-NaAlSi2O6 (jadeite) were synthesized in the temperature range 800-1900 degrees C and under varying pressure, 10-55 kbar. The stability regions of various compositions of diopside-jadeite have been established experimentally using different compositions of glass materials: stoichiometric composition NaAlSi2O6, 0.1CaMgSi(2)O(6)-0.9NaAlSi(2)O(6), 0.2CaMgSi(2)O(6)0.8NaAlSi(2)O(6), 0.3CaMgSi(2)O(6)-0.7NaAlSi(2)O(6), and 0.4CaMgSi(2)O(6)-0.6NaAlSi(2)O(6). Unit cell parameters of synthetic clinopyroxenes with the above compositions were determined. The physical properties, such as hardness, toughness, density, and refractive index, etc., were also measured. The results show that synthetic clinopyroxenes have the same properties as the natural one. The gem quality of diopside-jadeite clinopyroxenes was achieved by synthesised on the basis of the above experiments. Various colouring agents, such as Cr2O3, Co2O3, NiO2, Fe2O3, TiO2, MnO, CuO, and their combinations, FeO-Cr2O3, etc., were added to obtain the different colours of gem. In addition, small amounts of the rare-earth oxides, such as CeO2, Nd2O3, Sm2O3, Dy2O3, Eu2O3, Er2O3, Pr6O11, Lu2O3 and CuO-Eu2O3, Co2O3Nd2O3, etc., were also added to produce fluorescent clinopyroxenes for jewellery.

Oxidative dehydroaromatization of propylene was investigated by the pulse technique over two kinds of single oxide catalysts. With the Bi2O3 catalyst, the main dimer product was 1,5-hexadiene, and the dimerization activity was stable to pulse number even if the catalyst was partly reduced to the bulk. With the CeO2 catalyst, benzene was mainly formed instead of 1,5-hexadiene, but the activity decreased rapidly with increasing pulse number, indicating that only the lattice oxygen near the catalyst surface could be used for oxidative dimerization and the further aromatization. The Bi-Ce-O system catalyst was found in this study to give higher aromatization activity and showed better stability, compared to the Bi-Sn-O catalyst. Although the Bi-Ce-O catalyst was only a mixture of the two component oxides from X-ray diffraction analysis, there was a significant combination effect on the selectivity to benzene. The highest and the most stable selectivity of benzene was obtained at Bi/Ce = 1. In the TPD spectrum of Bi-Ce-O catalyst, there are not only the lattice oxygen (beta-oxygen) over 620-degrees-C due to the reduction of Bi2O3, but also a great deal of the alpha-oxygen desorbed about 400-degrees-C, which is considered the absorbed oxygen in the bulk. This absorbed oxygen could probably be a compensation of the lattice oxygen through the route of gaseous --> absorbed --> lattice oxygen in the binary catalyst system. By the kinetic study on the Bi-Ce-O catalyst, the dimer formation rate was the first-order with respect to the partial pressure of propylene and zero-order of oxygen. Although detail investigation would be made further, it was considered that the complete oxidation of propylene would mainly take place parallelly on some different sites, and the rate-determining step of propylene dimerization occurred probably between an adosrbed propylene and a gaseous one by an Eley-Rideal type mechanism.

Steam reforming of ethanol over CuO/CeO2 was studied. Acetaldehyde and hydrogen were mainly produced at 260degreesC. At 380degreesC, acetone was the main product, and 2 mol of hydrogen was produced from 1 mol of ethanol. The formation of hydrogen accompanied by the production of acetone was considered to proceed through the following, consecutive reactions: dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. aldol condensation of the acetaldehyde, and the reaction of the aldol with the lattice oxygen [O(s)] on the catalyst to form a surface intermediate, followed by its dehydrogenation and decarboxylation. The overall reaction was expressed by2C(2)H(5)OH + H2O --> CH3COCH3 + CO2 + 4H(2). Ceria played an important role as an oxygen supplier. The addition of MgO to CuO/CeO2 resulted in the production of hydrogen at lower temperatures by accelerating aldol condensation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In an attempt to effectively integrate catalytic partial oxidation (CPO) and steam reforming (SR) reactions on the same catalyst, autothermal reforming (ATR) of n-octane was addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and carried out on a non-pyrophoric catalyst 0.3 wt.% Ru/K2O-CeO2/gamma-Al2O3. The ATR of n-octane was more efficient at the molar ratio Of O-2/C 0.35-0.45 and H2O/C 1.6-2.2 (independent parameters), respectively, and reforming temperature of 750-800 degrees C (dependent parameter). Among the sophisticated reaction network, the main reaction thread was deducted as: long-chain hydrocarbon -> CH4, short-chain hydrocarbon -> CO2, CO and H-2 formation by steam reforming, although the parallel CPO, decomposition and reverse water gas shift reaction took place on the same catalyst. Low temperature and high steam partial pressure had more positive effect on CH4 SR to produce CO2 other than CO. This was verified by the tendency of the outlet reformate to the equilibrium at different operation conditions. Furthermore, the loss of active components and the formation of stable but less active components in the catalyst in the harsh ATR atmosphere firstly make the CO inhibition capability suffer, then eventually aggravated the ATR performance, which was verified by the characterizations of X-ray fluorescence, BET specific surface areas and temperature programmed reduction. La0.8Sr0.2Mn1.1O3 (LSM1.1)-10 mol% Sc2O3-Stabilized ZrO2 co-doped with CeO2 (ScSZ) composite cathodes were investigated for anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with thin 8 mol% Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) electrolyte. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the ScSZ electrolytes displayed good chemical compatibility with the nonstoichiometric LSM1.1 against co-firing at 1300 degrees C. Increasing the CeO2 content in the ScSZ electrolytes dramatically suppressed the electrode polarization resistance, which may be related to the improved surface oxygen exchange or the enlarged active area of cathode. The 5Ce10ScZr was the best electrolyte for the composite cathodes, which caused a small ohmic resistance decrease and the reduced polarization resistance and brought about the highest cell performance. The cell performances at lower temperatures seemed to rely on the electrode polarization resistance more seriously, than the ohmic resistance. Compared with the cell impedance at higher temperatures, the higher the 5Ce10ScZr proportion in the composite cathodes, the smaller the increment of the charge transfer resistance at lower temperatures. The anode-supported SOFC with the LSM1.1-5Ce10ScZr (60:40) composite cathode achieved the maximum power densities of 0.82 W/cm(2) at 650 degrees C and 2.24 W/cm(2) at 800 degrees C, respectively.
