Cetaceans produce sound signals frequently. Usually, acoustic localization of cetaceans was made by cable hydrophone arrays and multichannel recording systems. In this study, a simple and relatively inexpensive towed acoustic system consisting of two miniature stereo acoustic data-loggers is described for localization and tracking of finless porpoises in a mobile survey. Among 204 porpoises detected acoustically, 34 individuals (similar to 17%) were localized, and 4 of the 34 localized individuals were tracked. The accuracy of the localization is considered to be fairly high, as the upper bounds of relative distance errors were less than 41% within 173 m. With the location information, source levels of finless porpoise clicks were estimated to range from 180 to 209 dB re 1 mu Pa pp at 1 m with an average of 197 dB (N=34), which is over 20 dB higher than that estimated previously from animals in enclosed waters. For the four tracked porpoises, two-dimensional swimming trajectories relative to the moving survey boat, absolute swimming speed, and absolute heading direction are deduced by assuming the animal movements are straight and at constant speed in the segment between two consecutive locations.

Natural killer (NK) cell enhancing factor (NKEF) belongs to the newly defined peroxiredoxin (Prx) family. Its functions are to enhance NK cell cytotoxicity and to protect DNA and proteins from oxidative damage. In this study, a partial cDNA sequence of carp NKEF-B was isolated from thymus cDNA library. Subsequently, the full-length cDNA of carp NKEF-B was obtained by means of 3' and 5' RACE, respectively. The full-length cDNA of carp NKEF-B was 1022 bp, consisting of a 73 bp 5'-terminal untranslated region (UTR), a 355 bp T-terminal UTR, and a 594 bp open reading frame coding for a protein of 197 amino acids. Carp NKEF-B contained two consensus Val-Cys-Pro (VCP) motifs and three consensus cysteine (Cys-51, Cys-70 and Cys-172) residues. Sequence comparison showed that the deduced amino acid sequence of carp NKEF-B had an overall similarity of 74-96% to that of other species homologues. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that carp NKEF-B forms a cluster with other known teleost NKEF-Bs. Then, by PCR we obtained a 5.1 -k long genomic DNA of carp NKEF-B containing six exons and five introns. Realtime RT-PCR results showed that carp NKEF-B gene was predominantly detected in kidney and head kidney under un-infected conditions. Whereas under SVCV-infection condition, the expression of NKEF-B gene was significantly increased in blood cells, gill, intestine and spleen, but maintained in liver, and decreased significantly in kidney and head kidney. Finally, the rNKEF-B was constructed and expressed in Escherichia coli. By using an antibody against carp rNKEF-B, immunohistochemical study further indicated that NKEF-B positive cells are mainly some RBCs and a few epithelial cells in gill and intestine, and that under SVCV-infection condition, these positive cells or positive products in their cytoplasm were mainly increased in gill and spleen sections of carp. The results obtained in the present study will help to understand the function of NKEF-B in teleost innate immunity. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Critical swimming speeds (U-crit) and morphological characters were compared between the F-4 generation of GH-transgenic common carp Cyprinus carpio and the non-transgenic controls. Transgenic fish displayed a mean absolute U-crit value 22.3% lower than the controls. Principal component analysis identified variations in body shape, with transgenic fish having significantly deeper head, longer caudal length of the dorsal region, longer standard length (L-S) and shallower body and caudal region, and shorter caudal length of the ventral region. Swimming speeds were related to the combination of deeper body and caudal region, longer caudal length of the ventral region, shallower head depth, shorter caudal length of dorsal region and L-S. These findings suggest that morphological variations which are poorly suited to produce maximum thrust and minimum drag in GH-transgenic C. carpio may be responsible for their lower swimming abilities in comparison with non-transgenic controls.

We reported diet fluctuation in isotopic composition of surface seston from two connected lakes in China, oligotrophic Lake Fuxian and eutrophic Lake Xingyun. The decrease in nighttime and the increase in daytime of isotope signatures of seston might be attributed to the light-dependent balance between the photosynthesis and the respiration of phytoplankton and to the changes in the species composition and the relative abundance of phytoplankton functional groups at the water's surface in diel growth. The relatively high isotopic signatures and the large-extent diel fluctuation of phytoplankton in the eutrophic lake could be due to utilization of heavy-isotope-enriched inorganic sources and the high primary productivity. Extent of diel fluctuation in delta C-13 and delta N-15 of phytoplankton were relatively small compared with the isotopic enrichment per trophic transfer and thus might have negligible effect on the source identification and the trophic evaluation of consumers.

A pathogenic virus (RGV), isolated from diseased pig frog Rana grylio with lethal syndrome, was investigated with regard to morphogenesis and cellular interactions in EPC cells, a cell Line from fish. Different stages of virus amplification, maturation and assembly were observed at nucleus, cytoplasm and cellular membranes. The matured virus particles, were not only distributed diffusely in nucleus, cytoplasm and cellular surface, but also aggregated as pseudocrystalline arrays in the cytoplasm. Virions were released by budding from the plasma membranes, or following cell lysis. Various types of cell damage, such as small vacuoles, spherical inclusions, and swollen and empty mitochondria, were also found. Some typical characteristics of RGV, such as the symmetrical shape of the virions, replication process involving both nuclear and cytoplasmic phases, budding release from cellular membrane and intracellular membrane, viromatrix and paracrystalline aggregation in cytoplasm, and its acute pathogenic effects, were observed to be similar to that of other iridoviruses. Therefore, the RGV appears to be a member of the Iridoviridae based on these studies. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Novel room temperature photoluminescence (PL) of the Ge/Si islands in multilayer structure grown on silicon-on-insulator substrates is investigated. The cavity formed by the mirrors at the surface and the buried SiO2 interface has a strong effect on the PL emission. The peak position is consistent with the theoretical calculation and independent of the exciting power, which is the evidence of cavity effect on the room temperature photoluminescence. Microscopic luminescence and Raman scattering study was carried on AIInGaN quaternary alloy. Based on the analyses of SEM image and cathodoluminescence spectra measured around V-defects, the correlation between V-defect formation and indium segregation was clarified. Raman scattering of thin AlInGaN epilayers was investigated by using the short wavelength excitation of 325nm laser line. The frequency shift of A(1)(LO) phonon induced by the change of Al composition in alloy was observed. The Raman scattering of LO phonons was found to be resonantly enhanced with outgoing resonance, and it is attributed to the cascade-like electron-multiphonon interaction mechanism.

Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of GaInNAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells grown on a GaAs substrate by molecular beam epitaxy are measured in a range of temperatures and excitation power densities. The energy position of the dominant PL peak shows an anomalous S-shape temperature dependence instead of the Varshni relation. By careful inspection, especially for the PL under lower excitation power density, two near bandedge peaks are well identified. These are assigned to carriers localized in nitrogen-induced bound states and interband excitonic recombinations, respectively. It is suggested that the temperature-induced switch of such two luminescence peaks in relative intensity causes a significant mechanism responsible for the S-shape shift observed in GaInNAs. A quantitative model based on the thermal depopulation of carriers is used to explain the temperature dependence of the PL peak related to N-induced bound states.

In this paper the resonant wavelength of a long period fiber grating (LPG) is tuned toward longer wavelength by etching the fiber, For LP04 and LP05 cladding modes', the tuning ranges of 23 and 81 nm are achieved, respectively. Also the dependence of the resonant wavelength on the cladding radius of LPG is theoretically simulated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B,V. All rights reserved.

A systematic study of self-organized In0.5Ga0.5As quantum dots (QDs) and islands grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) and (n11) A/B GaAs substrates is given, where n varies from 1 to 5. Low-temperature photoluminescence results show that the properties of the dots have a strong dependence on the substrate orientation as revealed by atomic force microscopy, consistent with the differences in size, shape, and distribution of QDs on different substrates. From (100) to (111) surface, the photoluminescence peak position of dots on B surfaces is found to blueshift more than that on A surfaces. QDs are also formed on (511) A surface. The positional distribution of these dots exhibits a wavy shape, which is related to the corrugated structure of this surface. Two kinds of islands are formed on (111) A surface, but further work is needed to explain the mechanism of these islands. (C) 2001 American Vacuum Society.

We have studied the optical and structural properties of InAs/GaAs QDs covered by InxGa1-xAs (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.3) layer using transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectra and atomic force microscopy. We find that the strain reduces in the growth direction of InAs islands covered by InGaAs instead of GaAs layer. Significant redshift of PL peak energy and narrowing of PL linewidth are observed for the InAs QDs covered by 3 nm thick InGaAs layer. In addition, atomic force microscopy measurements indicate that the InGaAs islands will nucleate on top of InAs quantum dots, when 3 nm In0.3Ga0.7As overgrowth layer is deposited. This result can well explain the PL intensify degradation and linewidth increment of quantum dots with a higher In-mole-fraction InGaAs layer. The energy gap change of InAs QDs covered by InGaAs may be explained in terms of reducing strain, suppressing compositional mixing and increasing island height. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Photoluminescence spectroscopy has been used to investigate self-assembled InAs islands in InAlAs grown on InP(0 0 1) by molecular beam epitaxy, in correlation with transmission electron microscopy. The nominal deposition of 3.6 monolayers of InAs at 470 degrees C achieves the onset stage of coherent island formation. In addition to one strong emission around 0.74 eV, the sample displaces several emission peaks at 0.87, 0.92. 0.98, and 1.04 eV. Fully developed islands that coexist with semi-finished disk islands account for the multipeak emission. These results provide strong evidence of size quantization effects in InAs islands.
