Uniform Gd(OH)(3) nanotubes have been prepared via a simple wet-chemical route at ambient pressure and low temperature, without any catalysts, templates, or substrates, in which Gd(NO3)(3) was used as the gallium source and ammonia as the alkali. SEM and TEM images indicate that the as-obtained Gd(OH)3 entirely consists of uniform nanotubes in high yield with diameters of about 40 nm and lengths of 200-300 nm. The temperature-dependent morphological evolution and the formation mechanism of the Gd(OH)(3) nanotubes were investigated in detail. Furthermore, the Gd2O3 and Eu3+-doped Gd2O3 nanotubes, which inherit their parents' morphology, were obtained during a direct annealing process in air. The corresponding Gd2O3:Eu3+ nanotubes exhibit the strong red emission corresponding to the D-5(0)-F-7(2), transition of the Eu3+ ions under UV light or low-voltage electron beam excitation, which might find potential applications in the fields such as light-emitting phosphors, advanced flat panel displays, or biological labeling.

Tb3+-doped LiYF4 films were deposited on quartz glass by a simple sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 300 degrees C and fully crystallized at 400 degrees C. AFM and FESEM images of singly coated LiY0.95Tb0.05F4 annealed at 400 degrees C indicated that the film is uniform and crack-free films with average grain size of 90 nm, root mean square roughness of 11 nm and thickness of 120 nm. The doped Tb3+ ions showed its characteristic emission in crystalline LiYF4 films, i.e., D-5(3), F--7(4)J (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) emissions. The optimum doping concentration of the Tb3+ was determined to be 5.0 mol% of Y3+ in LiYF4 films.

A red long lasting phosphor Zn-3(PO4)(2): Mn2+ Ga3+ (ZPMG) was prepared by ceramic method, and phase conversion and spectral properties were investigated. Results indicated that the phase conversion from alpha-Zn-3(PO4), beta-Zn-3(PO4)(2) to gamma-Zn-3(PO4)(2) occurs with different manganese concentration incorporated and sinter process. The structural change induced by the phase transformation results in a remarkable difference in the spectral properties. The possible luminescence mechanism for this red LLP with different forms has been illustrated.

Y2O3:Sm and Gd2O3:Sm powder phosphors were prepared by carbonate coprecipitation method. The purified crystalline phases of Y2O3:Sm and Gd2O3:SM were obtained at 600degreesC, and the crystallinity increases with increase in annealing temperature. Both samples contain aggregated phosphor particles. An energy transfer (ET) from Y2O3 and Gd2O3 hosts to sm(3+) has been observed, and the ET efficiency in the latter is higher than that in the former because an energy migration process like Gd3+-(Gd3+)(n)-Sm3+ has occurred in the latter. Furthermore, an upconversion luminescence from the (4)G(5/2) level of Sm3+ has been observed in both Y2O3 and Gd2O3 under the excitation of 936 nm infrared, whose mechanisms are proposed. Both the up and downconversion emission intensities of Sm3+ in Gd2O3 are stronger than those in Y2O3.

A mixed-conducting perovskite-type Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) ceramic membrane reactor with high oxygen permeability was applied for the activation of methane. The membrane reactor has intrinsic catalytic activities for methane conversion to ethane and ethylene. C-2 selectivity up to 40-70% was achieved, albeit that conversion rate were low, typically 0.5-3.5% at 800-900 degreesC with a 50% helium diluted methane inlet stream at a flow rate of 34 ml/min. Large amount of unreacted molecular oxygen was detected in the eluted gas and the oxygen permeation flux improved only slightly compared with that under non-reactive air/He experiments. The partial oxidation of methane to syngas in a BSCFO membrane reactor was also performed by packing LiLaNiO/gamma -Al2O3 with 10% Ni loading as the catalyst. At the initial stage, oxygen permeation flux, methane conversion and CO selectivity were closely related with the state of the catalyst. Less than 21 h was needed for the oxygen permeation flux to reach its steady state. 98.5% CH4 conversion, 93.0% CO selectivity and 10.45 ml/cm(2) min oxygen permeation flux were achieved under steady state at 850 degreesC. Methane conversion and oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing temperature, No fracture of the membrane reactor was observed during syngas production. However, H-2-TPR investigation demonstrated that the BSCFO was unstable under reducing atmosphere, yet the material was found to have excellent phase reversibility. A membrane reactor made from BSCFO was successfully operated for the POM reaction at 875 degreesC for more than 500h without failure, with a stable oxygen permeation flux of about 11.5 ml/cm(2) min. A single-pass process with the combination of oxidative coupling (OCM) and dehydro-aromatization (MDA) for the direct conversion of methane is carried out. With the assistance of the OCM reaction over the SrO-La2O3/CaO catalyst loaded on top of the catalyst bed, the duration of the dehydro-aromatization reaction catalyzed by a 6Mo/HMCM-49 catalyst shows a significant improvement, and. the initial deactivation rate constant of the overall process revealed about 1.5 x 10(-6) s(-1). Up to 72 h on stream, the yield of aromatics was still maintained at 5.0% with a methane conversion of 9.6%, which is obviously higher than that reported for the conventional MDA process with single catalyst. Upon the TPR results, this wonderful enhancement would be attributed to an in-situ formation of CO2 and H2O through the OCM reaction, which serves as a scavenger for actively removing the coke formed during the MDA reaction via a reverse Boudouard reaction and the water gas reaction as well.

In this paper, a theoretical model proposed in Part I (Zhu et al., 2001a) is used to simulate the behavior of a twin crank NiTi SMA spring based heat engine, which has been experimentally studied by Iwanaga et al. (1988). The simulation results are compared favorably with the measurements. It is found that (1) output torque and heat efficiency decrease as rotation speed increase; (2) both output torque and output power increase with the increase of hot water temperature; (3) at high rotation speed, higher water temperature improves the heat efficiency. On the contrary, at low rotation speed, lower water temperature is more efficient; (4) the effects of initial spring length may not be monotonic as reported. According to the simulation, output torque, output power and heat efficiency increase with the decrease of spring length only in the low rotation speed case. At high rotation speed, the result might be on the contrary.

III-V pentenary semiconductor AlGaInPAs with a direct band gap of up to 2.0 eV has been grown successfully on GaAs substrates by liquid phase epitaxy;(LPE). With the introduction of the energy bowing parameters of quaternaries, the theoretical calculations agree well with the measured PL peak energy data from pentenary samples.

The phenomena of the 'piling up' and 'sinking-in' of surface profiles in conical indentation in elastic-plastic solids with work hardening are studied using dimensional and finite-element analysis. The degree of sinking in and piling up is shown to depend on the ratio of the initial yield strength Y to Young's modulus E and on the work-hardening exponent n. The widely used procedure proposed by Oliver and Pharr for estimating contact depth is then evaluated systematically. By comparing the contact depth obtained directly from finite-element calculations with that obtained from the initial unloading slope using the Oliver-Pharr procedure, the applicability of the procedure is discussed.

A new kind of rare earth material with high efficient long-persistent phosphors, such as SrAl2O4: Eu, Dy, has been developed in recent years. The PMMA with long-persistent phosphors is typical one of applications for the phosphors. In this work, we try to probe into the affection of the manufacture process on the PMMA with long-persistent phosphors, to analyze its performance, and its luminescence behavior, especially to study the self-excitation of the PMMA with long-persistent phosphors.

Spherical nanoindentation tests were performed on Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass and pile-ups were observed around the indenter. A new modified expanding cavity model was developed to characterize the indentation deformation behavior of strain-hardening and pressure-dependent materials. By using this model, the representative stress-strain response of this bulk metallic glass to hardness and indentation in the elastic-plastic regime were obtained taking into consideration the effect of pile-up.

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) can be easily deformed to a new shape by applying a small external load at low temperature, and then recovers its original configuration upon heating. This unique shape memory phenomenon has inspired many novel designs. SMA based heat engine is one among them. SMA heat engine is an environment-friendly alternative to extract mechanical energy from low-grade energies, for instance, warm wastewater, geothermal energy, solar thermal energy, etc. The aim of this paper is to present an applicable theoretical model for simulation of SMA-based heat engines. First, a micro-mechanical constitutive model is derived for SMAs. The volume fractions of austenite and martensite variants are chosen as internal variables to describe the evolution of microstructure in SMA upon phase transition. Subsequently, the energy equation is derived based on the first thermodynamic law and the previous SMA model. From Fourier’s law of heat conduction and Newton’s law of cooling, both differential and integral forms of energy conversion equation are obtained.

A series of experiments were conducted to characterize the self-ignition and combustion of thermally cracked kerosene in both a Mach 2.5 model combustor with a combustor entrance height of 51 mm and a Mach 3.0 model combustor with an entrance height of 70 mm. A unique kerosene heating and delivery system was developed, which can prepare heated kerosene up to 950 K at a pressure of 5.5 MPa with negligible fuel coking. The extent of China no. 3 kerosene conversion under supercritical conditions was measured using a specially designed system. The compositions of gaseous products as a result of thermal cracking were analyzed using gas chromatography. The mass flow rates of cracked kerosene were also calibrated and measured using sonic nozzles. With the injection of thermally cracked kerosene, the ability to achieve enhanced combustion performance was demonstrated under a variety of airflow and fuel conditions. Furthermore, self-ignition tests of cracked kerosene in a Mach 2.5 model combustor over a range of fuel injection conditions and with the help of different amounts of pilot hydrogen were conducted and discussed.

Pile-up around indenter is usually observed during instrumented indentation tests on bulk metallic glass. Neglecting the pile-up effect may lead to errors in evaluating hardness, Young's modulus, stress-strain response, etc. Finite element analysis was employed to implement numerical simulation of spherical indentation tests on bulk metallic glass. A new model was proposed to describe the pile-up effect. By using this new model, the contact radius and hardness of Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass were obtained under several different indenter loads with pile-up, and the results agree well with the data generated by numerical simulation.

A new mathematical model for the transient flow in the composite low permeability is established. It is solved by FEM with different boundary conditions such as infinite, circular closed and constant pressure boundary conditions. The typical curves for transient wellbore pressure have been presented. It is shown that the pressure and pressure derivative curves with composite start-up pressure gradients have different slopes which are depended on the start-up pressure gradients and the mobility radios in different regions. The boundary effects are the same as the normal reservoirs without start-up pressure gradients. The study provides a new tool to analyze the transient pressure test data in the low permeability reservoir.
