Oligothiophenes (OThs) end-capped with 3-quinolyl or pyridyl with nitrogen atom at meta-, ortho- or para-position were synthesized. The single-crystal structures of the resulting molecules, i.e., o-PyTh4, m-PyTh4, p-PyTh4, QuTh2, and QuTh3, were successfully determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Pyridyl end-capped OThs; o-PyTh4, m-PyTh4, and p-PyTh4, adopt the different herringbone packing arrangement in crystals depending on the position of the nitrogen atom because of the presence of weak C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds. The p-PyTh4 molecules are linked each other along the long axis of the molecules to form the extended chains by C-H center dot center dot center dot N dimer synthon. For m-PyTh4, the C-H center dot center dot center dot N interactions two-dimensionally extend through C-H center dot center dot center dot N trimer synthon.

A new approach for the synthesis of polyaniline nanofibers under pseudo-high dilute conditions in aqueous system has been developed. High yield nanoscale polyaniline fibers with 18-110 nm in diameter are readily prepared by a high aniline concentration 0.4 M oxidation polymerization using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant in the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl), perchloric acid (HClO4), (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA), acidic phosphate PAEG120 (PA120) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the dopants. The novel pathway always produces polyaniline nanofibers of tunable diameters, high conductivity (from 10(0) to 10(1) S/cm) and crystallinity.

A new vandylpolymolybdophosphate, [H2N(C2H4)(2)NH2](4)-(H3O)[(PMo2Mo6V4O40)-Mo-V-V-VI-O-IV((VO)-O-IV)(2)].H2O, was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-vis, XPS, ESR spectra, mid singe crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound contains an unusual highly reduced pseudo-Keggin type polyoxoanion with nine negative charges and exhibits an interesting phosphorus-centered alternate layer arrangement of molybdenum and vanadium oxides.

Phenyl-capped trianiline and tetraaniline in the leucoemeraldine oxidation state were synthesized through a modified-pseudo-high-dilution technique. The chemical oxidation process of these compounds were studied by UV-Vis spectra. It was found that phenyl-capped trianiline in the leucoemeraldine oxidation state was oxidized to its EB form and then decomposed, Phenyl-capped tetraaniline was oxidized to its EB form and then to the pernigraniline oxidation state.

Monodispersed phenyl-capped trianiline and tetraaniline were successfully synthesized by the reactions of diphenylamine with acetaldehyde-based Sckiff's bases of N-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine and 1,4-phenylenediamine, respectively, in the presence of ammonium persulfate and hydrochloric acid, subsequent deprotonation and reduction with phenylhydrazine. The reaction mechanism probably involves the slow hydrolysis of the Sckiff's bases and subsequent oxidative coupling reactions of the formed ammonium salts with diphenylamine at pseudo-high dilution condition of the salts.

In this study, a full-length cytosolic heat shock protein 70 complementary DNA (cDNA) of Laminaria japonica (designated as LJHsp70) was obtained by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) coupled with rapid amplification of cDNA ends. The full length of LJHsp70 cDNA was 2,918 bp, with a 5' untranslated region of 248 bp, a 3' untranslated region of 696 bp, and an open reading frame of 1,974 bp encoding a polypeptide of 657 amino acids with an estimated molecular mass of 72.03 kDa and an estimated isoelectric point of 4.97. There was highly repeated sequence of CAA in 5' untranslated region of LJHsp70. The result of phylogenetic tree of Hsp70s, the BLAST program, analysis and cytosolic Hsp70-specific motif of LJHsp70 verified that the cloned LJHsp70 belonged to cytosolic Hsp70 family. Three typical Hsp70 signature motifs were detected in LJHsp70 by InterPro analysis. Under different stress conditions, messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels of LJHsp70 were quantified by quantitative RT-PCR. To L. japonica sporophytes kept in different temperatures for 1 h, the expression level of LJHsp70 at 30A degrees C was highest and twofold higher than that at 10A degrees C. To L. japonica sporophytes kept at 25A degrees C for different times, the mRNA expression level of LJHsp70 reached a maximum level after 7 h and then dropped progressively. The expression level of LJHsp70 at 0 or 5aEuro degrees salt concentration for 2 h was twofold higher than that at 30aEuro degrees salt concentration for 2 h. The results showed that LJHsp70 may be a kind of potential biomarker used to monitor environment conditions.

Three cDNA sequences encoding four SNARE (N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors) motifs were cloned from sea perch, and the deduced peptide sequences were analyzed for structural prediction by using 14 different web servers and softwares. The "ionic layer" structure, the three dimensional extension and conformational characters of the SNARE 7S core complex by using bioinformatics approaches were compared respectively with those from mammalian X-ray crystallographic investigations. The result suggested that the formation and stabilization of fish SNARE core complex might be driven by hydrophobic association, hydrogen bond among R group of core amino acids and electrostatic attraction at molecular level. This revealed that the SNARE proteins interaction of the fish may share the same molecular mechanism with that of mammal, indicating the universality and solidity of SNARE core complex theory. This work is also an attempt to get the protein 3D structural information which appears to be similar to that obtained through X-ray crystallography, only by using computerized approaches. CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) are known to be immunostimulatory in vertebrate systems and can activate both innate and adaptive immune responses. In this report, we described the selection, identification, and analysis of CpG motifs with immunoprotective effects in Japanese flounder. Sixteen CpG ODNs were synthesized and examined for the ability to inhibit bacterial dissemination in Japanese flounder blood. Four ODNs with the strongest inhibitory effects were selected and mixed to form ODNs 4M. In addition, a plasmid, pCN6, was constructed that contains the sequences of the four selected ODNs. When administered into Japanese flounder via intraperitoneal injection, both ODNs 4M and pCN6 could, in dose and time dependent manners, afford short-term protection against the infections of two different bacterial pathogens. Immunological analyses showed that ODNs 4M and, especially, pCN6 activated head kidney macrophages and enhanced serum bactericidal activity via probably the alternative pathway of complement activation. When used as a DNA vaccine to immunize Japanese flounder, pCN6 conferred apparent protections (42.9% and 52.6%, respectively, in terms of relative percent survival) against the challenges of two different fish pathogens at 4-week post-vaccination. Transcriptional analysis showed that vaccination with pCN6 upregulated the expression of the genes encoding NKEF, MHC II alpha, IL-1 beta, Mx, and MHC I alpha. These results demonstrate that ODNs 4M and pCN6 are immunostimulatory in Japanese flounder and can induce short- and long-term nonspecific protections against bacterial infections.
