The voltammetric behavior of cytochrome c entrapped in hydrogel membranes at paraffin wax-impregnated spectroscopic graphite electrodes (WISGE) was studied in this paper. A pair of well-defined peaks appeared at +70 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl). Beside these two peaks, another pair of peaks emerged at around +225 mV. Further investigations suggested that at least three states of cytochrome c existed in the membranes due to the special structure of the hydrogel. The native conformation of cytochrome c molecules was stabilized by the hydrophilic environment that was formed by the hydroxyl structure of the membranes and facilitated the cytochrome c electron transfer reaction at +70 mV. The molecules directly adsorbed on the surface of the graphite electrode were responsible for the redox peaks at around +225 mV. Whether the adsorption peaks were detectable or not was related to the thickness of membranes and the pre-retaining time before the formation of membranes.

In this paper, hydrophilic microporous cellulose nitrate membranes have been surface-modified by plasma polymerization of octafluorocyclobutane (OFCB). The microporous composite membranes with a hydrophilic layer sandwiched between two hydrophobic layers have been obtained. The obtained composite membranes have been used in a membrane distillation (MD) process and have exhibited good performance. The effects of polymerization conditions, such as glow-discharge power and deposition time, on the structures and MD performances of the obtained composite membranes have been investigated by SEM, X-ray microscopical analysis, and XPS. The polymerization conditions should be as mild as possible in order to prepare the hydrophobic composite membrane with good MD performance. The typical MD behaviors of the obtained hydrophobic composite membranes are in agreement with that of hydrophobic membranes directly prepared from hydrophobic polymeric materials, like PVDF, PTFE, or PP.

Poly(2-acrylamido-hexadecylsulfonic acid) (PAMC16S) forms a stable monolayer on a pure water surface. More closely packed monolayers can be obtained when the subphase contains Cd2+ or Ca2+. Self-assembled monolayers have been formed on gold surfaces and characterized by contact angle measurement, XPS and electrochemical analysis. The results show that the monolayers are hydrophobic with the hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups adjacent to the metal surfaces and with the hydrocarbon chains extended from the surfaces. The monolayers exhibit great adsorption stability during the faradaic reactions, illustrating the advantage of polymeric LB films in potential applications.

Two methods for tetrodotoxin analysis using liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray iontrap mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) have been established with C,, reversed phase column and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) column, respectively. Sensitivity and reproducibility of the methods were compared. The method using C-18 column in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode had a detection limit (S/N = 3) of 120 pg, and a good linearity of the calibration curve was obtained for tetrodotoxin (r = 0. 9992). High reproducibility of the method was observed, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) below 10%. The method using HILIC column in SIM mode and selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode had detection limits (S/N = 3) of 15 and 3.75 pg, respectively. Good linearity of the calibration curves was obtained for tetrodotoxin (r = 0. 9996 and 0. 9998 in SIM and SRM mode, respectively). T he reproducibility was high in SIM mode but relatively poor in SRM mode. Based on the results, the method using HILIC column in SIM mode was suggested for the analysis of tetrodotoxin with LC-MS system.

In order to effectively identify and accurately evaluate low resistivity reservoir in Dongpu depression, using various logging data synthetically, geological and logging characteristics are summarized in term of different blocks on the basis of core analysis, cutting logging, oil testing and commissioning data. The formation mechanism of low resistivity reservoir is studied, and the main factors that cause low resistivity reservoir are discovered. The first factor is fine lithology, high shale content and hydrophilic rock. The second factor is high salinity formation water. The third factor is light oil, high gas quantity dissolved and large difference density of oil-water. The last factor is low amplitude structure of reservoir and low differential degree of oil-water. According to the characteristics of low resistivity reservoir, the method of compound lithology, the method of movable fluid, the method of phase permeability and the method of nuclear magnetic resonance logging are put forward. The compound lithology criterion of distinguishing hydrocarbon is founded in term of different blocks on the basis of electrical efficiency. The evaluation models of reservoir parameters are founded; whose core is oil saturation and phase permeability. In order to calculate oil saturation, the compound lithology model on the basis of electrical efficiency theory is chosen on condition that there is only the combination logging data of acoustic and induction; the W-S model is chosen on condition that there is all-around logging data. The calculational precision of oil saturation in low resistivity reservoir of work area is enhanced when the selection method is utilized. There are 1212 layers of reservoir newly added by the old well reexamination in the ten oil areas. The coincidence rate of logging interpretation reaches 83.2 percent according to the 74 well-times of oil testing or commissioning, which indicates that the distinguishing method and evaluation models of low resistivity reservoir above are feasible.By the reexamination, a ten million tons of proved reserves related to the low resistivity reservoir are newly added, consequently, the groundwork is established to increase reserve and production of old oilfields in the east of China and new livingness is added for the petroleum exploration and development in Dongpu depression.

Nylon membrane was modified by binding with polyhydroxyl-containing materials to increase its hydrophilicity and reduce its nonspecific interaction with proteins. The effect of binding hydrophilic materials on amount of ligand bound-Cibacron Blue F3GA (CBF) was investigated. Experimental data showed that the amount of CBF bound can be increased significantly after binding of hydrophilic materials.

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) consisting of multi-layer electrodes provide higher performance than those with the traditional electrode. The new electrode structure includes a hydrophilic thin film and a traditional catalyst layer. A decal transfer method was used to apply the thin film to the Nafion(R) membrane. Results show that the performance of a cell with the hydrophilic thin film is obviously enhanced. A cell with the optimal thin film electrode structure operating at I M CH3OH, 2 atm oxygen and 90degreesC yields a current density of 100 mA/cm(2) at 0.53 V cell voltage. The peak power density is 120 mW/cm(2). The performance stability of a cell in a short-term life operation was also increased when the hydrophilic thin film was employed. Titania-silica (Ti/SiO2) and silica-titania-silica (Si/Ti/SiO2) catalysts were:prepared by chemical grafting using TiCl4 and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors and SiO2 as support. The prepared catalysts were characterized by UV Raman and visible Raman spectroscopies, XRD and the epoxidation of styrene; Ti/SiO2: catalyst grafted with only titanium species is not very active for epoxidation using H2O2 (30%), but is active and-selective when one uses tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). The catalyst grafted at high temperatures shows better epoxide selectivity. Si/Ti/SiO2 catalyst, the titanium-silica grafted further with TEOS, is active and selective for the epoxidation of styrene using either dilute H2O2 or TBHP, possibly due to the fact that the grafting of Ti/SiO2 with TEOS modifies the coordination structure of titanium and makes the titanium sites of Si-O-Ti-O-Si species less hydrophilic. A characteristic band at 1085cm(-1) due to Ti-O-Si species is detected for the grafted catalysts by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. Reaction between TiCl4 and SiO2 at high temperatures favors the formation of Ti-O-Si species. Better activity and selectivity to epoxide,is found for the catalysts with more Ti-O-Si species. It is assumed that the active sites are the highly isolated Ti-O-Si species. For Si/Ti/SiO2 catalyst, the gas phase O-2 can participate in the catalytic oxidation of styrene when H2O2 is present ana:ii causes the formation of benzaldehyde. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
