Poly (aniline-co-anthranilic acid) (PANANA) nanorods in bundles was prepared successfully in an alcohol/aqueous media without assistance of an), other kinds of acids. Anthranilic acid played all roles of monomer, acid-media provider, and dopant in the reaction system, and ammonium persulfate (APS) served as the oxidant. The morphologies of PANANA nanorods in bundles were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Influences of the monomer molar ratio on the resulting morphology were investigated. Moreover the formation mechanism of the nanostructured copolymer was proposed. FT-IR. UV-vis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were used to confirm the molecular and electrical structure of the self-doped PANANA. The intrinsic properties, such as conductivity, electrochemical redox activity and room-temperature solubility of the resulting copolymer were explored.

The surface morphologies of poly(styrene-b-4vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) diblock copolymer and homopolystyrene (hPS) binary blend thin films were investigated by atomic force microscopy as a function of total volume fraction of PS (phi(PS)) in the mixture. It was found that when hPS was added into symmetric PS-b-P4VP diblock copolymers, the surface morphology of this diblock copolymer was changed to a certain degree. With phi(PS) increasing at first, hPS was solubilized into the corresponding domains of block copolymer and formed cylinders. Moreover, the more solubilized the hPS, the more cylinders exist. However, when the limit was reached, excessive hPS tended to separate from the domains independently instead of solubilizing into the corresponding domains any longer, that is, a macrophase separation occurred. A model describing transitions of these morphologies with an increase in phi(PS) is proposed. The effect of composition on the phase morphology of blend films when graphite is used as a substrate is also investigated.

In this paper, a simple route to the fabrication of palladium nanosheets is described. The interaction of palladium chloride (PdCl2) and n-octylamine salt resulted in the formation of a quasi-perovskite-type composite with a layered structure on a molecular scale. This composite can be employed as a template for preparing ultrathin Pd nanosheets when a {PdCl4}(2-) network is reduced in situ by hydrogen in toluene. The x-ray diffraction results indicate that the resulting Pd nanosheets are highly ordered, and they are confined inside the organic matrix as evidenced by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. These Pd nanosheets can be reorganized into layered structures in non-polarized organic solvent when the ordered structure is destroyed. This method of preparing Pd nanosheets is expected to be applicable to other layered organic/inorganic perovskite systems for obtaining the corresponding metal nanosheets.

The self-assembly of poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) and poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) on the surfaces of amorphous carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been investigated, respectively. The morphology and structures of these self-assembled thin films were studied by using atomic force microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. In the case of weak van der Waals interactions between absorbed molecules and substrate, i.e., on amorphous carbon, the self-assembly process was driven by absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions. For PDBS with weak absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions, the thin film showed organization lacking any measurable preferred orientation on the surface of amorphous carbon. While for PDHS with rigid backbone and strong intermolecular interactions, flat-on lamellae with silicon backbones perpendicular to the surface of amorphous carbon were formed. However, in the case of strong van der Waals interactions between absorbed molecules and substrate, i.e., on HOPG, the self-assembly process was tailored by the balance of absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions and molecule-substrate interactions. Both PDHS and PDBS thin films grew into edge-on lamellae on the surface of HOPG, which aligned according to a Mold symmetry.

The effects of self-seeding nucleation on the crystallization behavior and properties of polypropylene (iPP) were studied. DSC results indicated that the crystallization temperature of iPP increased obviously after the process of self-seeding nucleation. The results of polarized fight microscopy showed that the spherulite size decreased markedly, as a result, the mechanical properties and the transparency of iPP were all improved.

Molecular recognition directed self-assemblies from complementary molecular components, melamine and barbituric acid derivatives were studied by means of NMR, fluorescence, and TEM. It was found that both the process of the self-assembly and the morphologies of the resulted self-assemblies could be mediated by modifying the structures of the molecular components used. The effect of the structures of the molecular components on the formation of the self-assemblies was discussed in terms of intermolecular interactions.

The adsorbed kinetics, proton transportation in electrochemical redox process of 4-pyridyl hydroquinone (4PHQ) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Pt electrode were studied by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ. It proved that the electrode was modified by a monolayer and underwent a rapid electron transfer. It was a slow adsorbed kinetic process. The ion transfer in the electrochemical redox at the SAM-modified electrode surface mainly involved into the hydrate hydrogen ion.

Self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) of trichlorogermanyl propanoic acid derivatives on hydroxylated silicon substrates are prepared for the first time. Contact angle measurement, ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry(XPS) are used to characterize these SAMs, It is demonstrated that a quasi-2D network is formed on the surface of the substrate after molecules adsorbed on it. The molecular chains have certain tilt angles to the substrate surface, The wettabilities of the SAMs are various, because the molecules adsorbed and liquids used in the experiments are different. It can be concluded that trichlorogermanes have similar self-assembly behavior as trichlorosilanes, Four SAMs are studied together: they are acid, ethyl, butyl and hexyl surfaces whose results are of good consistency.

Self-assembled monolayers of 1-teradecanethiol on gold were characterized by means of FTIR-ATR measurements, XPS and contact angle measurements. Linear dichroism measurements using FTIR-ATR are used to estimate the orientation of the alkyl chains. An equation for calculating the orientation angles of the alkyls chains was deduced. A novel kind of electroactive self-assembled monolayer (SAM) has been successfully prepared through the following procedure: (1) formation of inclusion complexes (denoted as CD/C8VC10SH) between N-(n-octyl)-N'-(10-mercaptodecyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide (C8VC10SH) and alpha-, beta-cyclodextrin (CD) under a mild condition; (2) spontaneous formation of SAM of CD/C8VC10SH on gold electrodes at room temperature. High-resolution H-1-NMR spectrum was used to confirm the formation of CD/C8VC10SH. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the redox behavior of the resulting monolayers and chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to characterize their electron transfer kinetics. It was found that the redox sites in SAM of CD/C8VC10SH are effectively diluted, with a larger electron transfer rate constant than that of SAM of C8VC10SH.
