To study the effects of upconversion in Erbium, a set of rate equations that simulates the performance of the passively Q-switched Er:Yb:glass laser with a Co2+:MgAl<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf> saturable absorber was set up. The dynamics of the Er3+ excited state and the effect of upconversion on the passively Q-switched laser are obtained through numerical simulation of the model. It is found that the impact ratios of upconversion effect on the peak power of the passively Q-switched laser pluse and the repetition rate are both decreased with the increase of pump power.

Infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence of Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped lithium-strontium-lead-bismuth (LSPB) glasses for developing potential upconversion lasers has been studied under 975-nm excitation. Based on the results of energy transfer efficiency and upconversion spectra, the optimal Yb(3+)-Er(3+) concentration ratio is found to be 5:1. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions 2H_(11/2)-->4I_(15/2), 4S_(3/2)-->4I_(15/2), and 4F_(9/2)-->4I_(15/2), respectively, were observed. The quadratic dependence of the 525-, 546-, and 657-nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975-nm excitation. The high-populated 4I_(11/2) level is supposed to serve as the intermediate state responsible for the upconversion processes. The intense upconversion luminescence of Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped LSPB glasses may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices.

We report on the energy transfer and frequency upconversion spectroscopic properties of Er3+-doped and Er3+/Yb3+-codoped TeO2-ZnO-Na2O-PbCl2 halide modified tellurite glasses upon excitation with 808 and 978 nm laser diode. Three intense emissions centered at around 529, 546 and 657 nm, alongwith a very weak blue emission at 4 10 nm have clearly been observed for the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped halide modified tellurite glasses upon excitation at 978 nm and the involved mechanisms are explained. The quadratic dependence of fluorescence on excitation laser power confirms the fact that the two-photon contribute to the infrared to green-red upconversion emissions. And the blue upconversion at 410 nm involved a sequential three-photon absorption process. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The upconversion luminescence properties of Yb3+/Tm3+-codoped oxyfluoride tellurite glasses under 980 nm excitation are investigated experimentally. The intense blue and relatively weak red emissions centered at 475 and 649 nm corresponding to the transitions (1)G(4) -> H-3(6) and (1)G(4) -> H-3(4) of Tm3+, respectively, are simultaneously observed at room temperature. The effect of PbF2 on upconversion intensity is observed and discussed, and possible upconversion mechanisms are evaluated. The intense blue upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Tm3+-codoped oxyfluoride tellurite glasses may be a potentially useful material for developing blue upconversion optical devices. Thermal stability, Raman spectra and blue upconversion luminescence properties of Tm-3divided by /Yb-3divided by -codoped halide modified tellurite glasses have been Studied. The results showed that the mixed halide modified tellurite glass (TFCB) has the best thermal stability, the lowest phonon energies and the strongest upconversion emissions. The effect of halide on upconversion intensity is observed and discussed and possible upconversion mechanisms are evaluated. The intense blue upconversion luminescence of Tin (3+) in TFCB Glass may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices.. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Blue, green and red emissions through frequency upconversion and energy transfer processes in Tm3+/Er3+/Yb3+-codoped oxyhalide tellurite glass under 980 nm excitation are investigated. The intense blue (476 nm), green (530 and 545 nm) and red (656 nm) emissions are simultaneously observed at room temperature. The blue (476 nm) emission was originated from the (1)G(4)->H-3(6) transition of Tm3+. The green (530 and 545 nm), and red (656 nm) upconversion luminescences were identified from the H-2(11/2)->I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2)->I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2)->I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, respectively. The energy transfer processes and possible upconversion mechanisms are evaluated. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Er3+ -doped strontium lead bismuth glass for developing upconversion lasers has been fabricated and characterized. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Omega(1) (t = 2,4,6), calculated based on the experimental absorption spectrum and Judd-Ofelt theory, were found to be Omega(2) = 2.95 x 10(-20), Omega(4) = 0-91 X 10(-20), and Omega(6) = 0.36 x 10(-20) cm(2). Under 975 nm excitation, intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) --> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2) respectively were observed. The upconversion mechanisms are discussed based oil the energy matching and quadratic dependence on excitation power, and the dominant mechanisms are excited state absorption and energy transfer upconversion for the green and red emissions. The long-lived I-4(11/2) level is supposed to serve as the intermediate state responsible for the upconversion processes. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Broadband and upconversion properties were studied in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluorophosphate glasses. Large Omega(6) and S-ed/(S-ed + S-md) values and the flat gain profile over 1530-1585 nm indicate the good broadband properties of the glass system. And a premise of using Omega(6) as a parameter to estimate the broadband properties of the glasses is proposed for the first time to our knowledge. Results showed that fluorescence intensity, upconversion luminescence intensity, the intensity ratio of red/green light (656 nm/545 nm) are closely related to the Yb3+:Er3+ ratio and Er3+ concentration, and the corresponding calculated lifetime of F-4(9/2) and S-4(3/2) states for red and green upconversion samples proves this conclusion. The upconversion mechanism is also discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bulk-lasses have been prepared in the TeO2-ZnO-ZnCl2 systems. Their characteristic temperatures were determined and analyzed. Raman and FT-IR spectra were used to analyze the effect of ZnCl2 on the structure and spectral properties of tellurite glasses and OH- groups in this glass system. The spectroscopic properties including absorption spectra, emission cross-sections and fluorescence lifetimes of Yb3+ in TeO2-ZnO-ZnCl2 were measured and calculated. It is demonstrated that the progressive replacement less than 20 mol% of TeO2 by ZnCl2 improves the thermal stability, removes the OH- groups, turns TeO4 bipyramidal arrangement into TeO3 (and/or TeO3+1) trigonal pyramids structures and results in the decrease of the symmetry of the structure, which increases the emission cross-sections and lifetimes. But when the content of ZnCl2 up to 30 mol%, the glass system becomes more hygroscopic and introduces more OH- groups, which decrease the emission cross-sections and shorten the lifetimes. The results show that the glass system with (TeO2)-Te-69-(ZnO)-Zn-10-20ZnCl(2)-1Yb(2)O(3) is a desirable component for active laser media for high power generation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Effect of PbF2 on Yb3+ -doped fluorophosphate glasses is studied. Results indicate that proper amount of PbF2 has absolute advantages in improving the crystallization stability of fluorophosphate glasses. T, value performs a decreasing and increasing tendency with 25 mol% PbF2 as the turning-point. And the spectroscopic properties such as absorption and emission cross section, effective fluorescence linewidth are apparently enhanced with PbF2 over 25 mol%. Lasing parameters beta, I-sat and I-min increase slightly with the addition of PbF2. Raman analysis proves that over 20 mol% PbF2, destroys the phosphate vibration groups greatly. Effect of fluoride ions introduction on structural, OH- content and up-conversion luminescence properties in Er3+-doped heavy metal oxide glasses have been investigated. Structure was investigated, indicating that fluoride has an important influence on the phonon density, maximum phonon energy of host glasses. With increasing fluoride content, the up-conversion luminescence intensity and quantum efficiencies increase notably, which could not be explained only by the maximum phonon energy change of host glasses. Our results show that, with the introduction of PbF2, the decrease of phonon density and OH- content contributes more to the enhanced up-conversion emissions than that of maximum phonon energy. To obtain efficient blue upconversion laser glasses, upconversion luminescence and mechanisms of Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped oxyhalide tellurite glasses were investigated under 980nm excitation. The results showed that upconversion blue and red emission intensities of Tm3+ first increase, reach its maximum at TM2O3% =0.1 mol%, and then decrease with increasing Tm2O3 content. The effect of TM2O3 content on upconversion intensity is discussed, and possible effect mechanisms are evaluated. The investigated results were conducing to increase upconversion luminescence efficiency of Tm3+. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In a three-components fluorophosphate glass system, the introduction of H3BO3 brings some valuable influence to the spectroscopic and thermal properties of the glasses. With H3BO3 increases from 2 to 20mol%, ohm(6), S-ed4113/2, FWHM, T-g and fluorescence lifetime change from 3.21 x 10(-20) cm(2), 1.77 x 10(-20) cm(2), 45 nm, 480 degrees C and 8.8 ms to 4.66 x 10(-20) cm(2), 2.11 x 10(-20) cm(2), 50 nm, 541 degrees C and 7.4 ms, respectively. sigma(abs), sigma(emi), FWHM x tau(f) x sigma(emi) has a maximum when H-3 BO3 is 11 mol%. T-g and T-x-T-g increases with H3BO3 introduction. Results showed that in fluorophosphate glasses, proper amount of B2O3 can be used as a modifier to suppress upconversion and improve spectroscopic properties, broadband property and crystallization stability of the glasses while keeps the fluorescence lifetime relatively high. Structural and frequency upconversion fluorescence properties of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped oxychloride germanate glasses have been investigated. The Raman spectrum investigation indicates that PbCl2 plays an important role in the formation of glass network and has an important influence on the upconversion luminescence. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546 and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The possible upconversion mechanism was also estimated and evaluated. Intense upconversion luminescence indicates that Er3+/Yb3+-codoped oxychloride germanate glass is a promising laser material. We present the results of a study that uses theoretical and experimental methods to investigate the characteristics of the upconversion luminescence of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped TeO2-BiCl3 glass system as a function of the BiCl3 fraction. These glasses are potentially important in the design of upconversion fiber lasers. Effect of local environment around Tm3+ on upconversion fluorescence intensity was analyzed by theoretical calculations. The structure and spectroscopic properties were investigated in the experiments by measuring the Raman spectra, IR transmission spectra, and absorption and fluorescence intensities at room temperature. The results indicate that blue luminescence quantum efficiency increases with increasing BiCl3 content from 10 to 60 mol%, which were interpreted by the increase of asymmetry of glass structure, decrease of phonon energy and removing of OH- groups.
