A marine green alga, Platymonas subcordiformis, was demonstrated to photobiologically evolve hydrogen (H-2) after the first stage of photosynthesis, when subjected to a two-phase incubation protocol in a second stage of H2 production: anaerobic incubation in the dark followed by the exposure to light illumination. The anaerobic incubation induced hydrogenase activity to catalyse H? evolution in the following phase of light illumination. H,) evolution strongly depended upon the duration of anaerobic incubation, deprivation of sulphur (S) from the medium and the medium pH. An optimal anaerobic incubation period of 32 h gave the maximum H2 evolution in the second phase in the absence of sulphur. Evolution of H,) was greatly enhanced by 13 times when S was deprived from the medium. This result suggests that S plays a critical role in the mediation of H-2 evolution from R subcordiformis. A 14-fold increase in H-2 production was obtained when the medium pH increased from 5 to 8; with a sharp decline at pH above eight. H-2 evolution was enhanced by 30-50% when supplementing the optimal concentrations of 25 mM acetate and 37.5 mM glucose. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The catalytic properties of the passivated, reduced passivated, and fresh bulk molybdenum nitride for hydrazine decomposition were evaluated in a microreactor. The reaction route of hydrazine decomposition over molybdenum nitride catalysts seems to be the same as that of Ir/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts. Below 673 K, the hydrazine decomposes into N-2 and NH3. Above 673 K, the hydrazine decomposes into N-2 and NH3 first, and then the produced NH3 further dissociates into N-2 and H-2. From the in situ FT-IR spectroscopy, hydrazine is adsorbed and decomposes mainly on the Mo site of the Mo2N/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) is a cheap, safe and readily available alternative to the commonly used hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite for the phase-transfer catalytic epoxidation of alpha,beta-enones under non-aqueous conditions. A variety of chalcone derivatives give the corresponding epoxides with quantitative conversion and satisfactory yields in just a few hours under mild conditions. An asymmetric variant of the epoxidation can be carried out in the presence of chiral N-anthracenylmethylcinchonidine bromide catalyst giving 73-93% ees and 76-94% yields.

MCM-22 zeolite with mid-strong acidity and openings of 10-membered ring channels may obtain a high catalytic activity and selectivity for alkylation of toluene with methanol. The acidic sites, for catalyzing alkylation of toluene with methanol, are weaker than that for catalyzing toluene disproportionation. Compared with silicon as a modifier, modification of MCM-22 with La(NO3)(3) is a promising way to improve the catalytic selectivity of para-xylene. In addition, the experimental results also clearly indicate the characteristics of MCM-22 structure consisting of large intracrystalline cages, some of which may locate on surface of MCM-22. Conventional oven drying (COD) and supercritical drying (SCD) methods were applied to the preparation of Mn-substituted hexaaluminate (BaMnA(11)O(19-alpha)) catalysts. The effect of drying methods on phase composition, specific surface area, pore structure and combustion activity of the samples was investigated. The samples obtained by SCD have higher surface area, narrower pore size distribution, and higher combustion activity than those obtained by COD.

In our previous work, it was shown that LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 was an excellent catalyst for partial oxidation of heptane to syngas in a fixed-bed reactor at high temperature and the selectivity of CO was about 93%. However, pure oxygen was used as the oxidant. We have developed a dense oxygen permeation membrane Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 that can supply pure oxygen for the reaction. In this work, the membrane was combined with the catalyst LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 in one rector for the partial oxidation of heptane that is typical component of gasoline. A good performance of the membrane reactor has been obtained, with 100% n-heptane conversion and >94% hydrogen selectivity at the optimized reaction conditions. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
