The effect of La/Ce ratio on the structure and electrochemical characteristics of the La0.7-xCexMg0.3Ni2.8Co0.5 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) alloys has been studied systematically. The result of the Rietveld analyses shows that, except for small amount of impurity phases including LaNi and LaNi2, all these alloys mainly consist of two phases: the La(La, Mg)(2)Ni-9 phase with the rhombohedral PuNi3-type structure and the LaNi5 phase with the hexagonal CaCU5-type structure. The abundance of the La(La, Mg)(2)Ni-9 phase decreases with increasing cerium content whereas the LaNi5 phase increases with increasing Ce content, moreover, both the a and cell volumes of the two phases decrease with the increase of Ce content. The maximum discharge capacity decreases from 367.5 mAh g(-1) (x = 0.1) to 68.3 mAh g(-1) (x = 0.5) but the cycling life gradually improve. As the discharge current density is 1200 mA g(-1), the HRD increases from 55.4% (x = 0.1) to 67.5% (x = 0.3) and then decreases to 52.1% (x = 0.5). The cell volume reduction with increasing x is detrimental to hydrogen diffusion D and accordingly decreases the low temperature dischargeability of the La0.7-xCexMg0.3Ni2.8Co0.5 (x = 0.1-0.5) alloy electrodes.

Ti45--xZr35--xNi17+2rCU3 (x=0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (I-phase) alloy powders are synthesized by mechanical alloying and subsequent annealing techniques, and the crystallographic and electrochemical characteristics are investigated. The alloy powders are I-phase, and the quasi-lattice constant decreases with increasing x value. The maximum discharge capacity of the I-phase alloy electrodes first increases and then decreases with increasing x value, and the Ti39Zr26Ni29Cu3 I-phase electrode exhibits the highest discharge capacity of 274 mAh g(--1). The high-rate dischargeability at the discharge current density of 240mA g(--1) increases from 55.31 % (x= 0) to 74.24% (x= 8). Cycling stability also increases with increasing x value. The improvement in electrochemical characteristics may be ascribed to the added nickel, which not only improves the electrochemical activity, but also makes the alloy more resistant to oxidation.

Crystallographic and electrochemical characteristics of ball-milled Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 +xNi (x = 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mass%) composite powders have been investigated. The powders are composed of amorphous, I- and Ni-phases when x increases from 5 to 20. With increasing x, the amount of Ni-phase increases but the quasi-lattice constant decreases. The maximum discharge capacity first increases as x increases from 0 to 15 and then decreases when x increases further from 15 to 20. The high-rate dischargeability and cycling stability increase monotonically with increasing x. The improvement of the electrochemical characteristics is ascribed to the metallic nickel particles highly dispersed in the alloys, which improves the electrochemical kinetic properties and prevents the oxidation of the alloy electrodes, as well as to the mixed structure of amorphous and icosahedral quasicrystal line phases, which enhances the hydrogen diffusivity in the bulk of the alloy electrodes and efficiently inhibits the pulverization of the alloy particles.

Kinetic and electrochemical properties of icosahedral quasicrystalline Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 alloy powder as negative electrode material of Ni-MH battery have been investigated at different temperatures. The calculated results show that the apparent activation enthalpy of the charge-transfer reaction is 43.89 kJ mol(-1), and the activation energy of hydrogen diffusion is 21.03 kJ mol(-1). The exchange current density and the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in the bulky electrode increase with increasing temperature, indicating that increasing temperature is beneficial to charge-transfer reaction and hydrogen diffusion. As a result, the maximum discharge capacity, activation property and high-rate dischargeability are greatly improved with increasing temperature. However, the charge retention and the cycling stability degrade with the increase of the temperature.

AB(2-x)%LaNi5 (x =0, 1, 5, 10) composite alloys were prepared by melting Zr0.9Ti0.1Ni1.1Mn0.6V0.3 with a small amount of LaNi5 alloy as addition. The microstructure and electrochemical characteristics of the composite alloys were investigated by means of XRD, SEM, EDS and electrochemical measurements. It was shown that LaNi5 addition does not change the basic hexagonal C14 Laves phase of AB(2) alloys, but some second phases have segregated. It was found that the addition of LaNi5 greatly improves the activation property, high-rate dischargeability (HRD) and charge-discharge cycling stability of AB(2) Laves phase alloy. At current density of 1200 mA/g, HRD of the alloy increases from 38.92% (x =0) to 60.09% (x = 10). The capacity retention of the alloy after 200 charge-discharge cycles increases from 57. 10% (x = 0) to 83.86% (x = 5) and 67.31% (x = 10). The improvement of the electrochemical characteristics caused by LaNi5 addition seems to be related to formation of the second phases.

Neodymium-cerium oxide (Nd2Ce2O7) was proposed as a new thermal barrier coating material in this work. Monolithic Nd2Ce2O7 powder was prepared by the solid-state reaction at 1400 degrees C. The phase composition, thermal stability and thermophysical properties of Nd2Ce2O7 were investigated. Nd2Ce2O7 with fluorite structure was thermally stable in the temperature range of interest for TBC applications. The results indicated that the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of Nd2Ce2O7 was higher than that of YSZ (6-8 Wt-% Y2O3 + ZrO2) and even more interesting was the TEC change as a function of temperature paralleling that of the superalloy bond coat. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of Nd2Ce2O7 is 30% lower than that of YSZ, which was discussed based on the theory of heat conduction. Thermal barrier coating of Nd2Ce2O7 was produced by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) using the spray-dried powder. The thermal cycling was performed with a gas burner test facility to examine the thermal stability of the as-prepared coating.

A series of La2O3-ZrO2-CeO2 composite oxides were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The final product keeps fluorite structure when the molar ratio Ce/Zr >= 0.7/0.3, and below this ratio only mixtures of La2Zr2O7 (pyrochlore) and La2O3-CeO2 (fluorite) exist. Averagely speaking, the increase of CeO2 content gives rise to the increase of thermal expansion coefficient and the reduction of thermal conductivity, but La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7 has the lowest sintering ability and the lowest thermal conductivity which could be explained by the theory of phonon scattering. Based on the large thermal expansion coefficient of La2Ce3.25O9.5, the low thermal conductivities and low sintering abilities of La2Zr2O7 and La-2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)(2)O-7, double-ceramic-layer thermal barrier coatings were prepared. The thermal cycling tests indicate that such a design can largely improve the thermal cycling lives of the coatings. Since no single material that has been studied so far satisfies all the requirements for high temperature thermal barrier coatings, double-ceramic-layer coating may be an important development direction of thermal barrier coatings.

Double-ceramic-layer (DCL) coatings with various thickness ratios composed of YSZ (6-8 wt.% Y2O3 + ZrO2) and lanthanum zirconate (LZ, La2Zr2O7) were produced by the atmospheric plasma spraying. Chemical stability of LZ in contact with YSZ in DCL coatings was investigated by calcining powder blends at different temperatures. No obvious reaction was observed when the calcination temperature was lower than 1250 degrees C, implying that LZ and YSZ had good chemical applicability for producing DCL coating. The thermal cycling test indicate that the cycling lives of the DCL coatings are strongly dependent on the thickness ratio of LZ and YSZ, and the coatings with YSZ thickness between 150 and 200 mu m have even longer lives than the single-layer YSZ coating. When the YSZ layer is thinner than 100 mu m, the DCL coatings failed in the LZ layer close to the interface of YSZ layer and LZ layer. For the coatings with the YSZ thickness above 150 mu m, the failure mainly occurs at the interface of the YSZ layer and the bond coat.

A simple method for the fabrication of Pd nanoparticles is described. The three-dimensional Pd nanoparticle films are directly formed on a gold electrode surface by simple electrodeposition at -200 mV from a solution of 1 M H2SO4+0.01 mM K2PdCl4. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy verifies the constant composition of the Pd nanoparticle films. Atomic force microscopy proves that the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles are uniformly distributed with an average particle diameter of 45-60 nm. It is confirmed that the morphology of the Pd nanoparticle films are correlated with the electrodeposition time and the state of the Au substrate. The resulting Pd-nanoparticle-film-modified electrode possesses high catalytic activity for the reduction of dissolved oxygen in 0.1 M KCl solution. Freshly prepared Pd nanoparticles can catalyze the reduction of O-2 by a 4-electron process at -200 mV in 0.1 M KCl, but this system is not very stable. The cathodic peaks corresponding to the reduction of O-2 gradually decrease with potential cycling and at last reach a steady state. Then two well-defined reduction peaks are observed at -390 and -600 mV vs. Ag/AgCl/KCl (sat.). Those two peaks correspond to a 2-step process for the 4-electron reduction pathway of O-2 in this neutral medium.

The combination of electrochemistry with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been used to characterize the growth of polyaniline (PAn) on a gold electrode surface during potential cycling. Potential-modulated SPR characteristics of the PAn film were also revealed. The potential switch between the oxidized and reduced states of PAn can lead to a large change of SPR response due to the variation in the imaginary part of the dielectric constant of PAn film resulting from the transition of the film in conductivity. The redox transition of the PAn film during potential cycling is very profitable to the SPR measurements. Two modes of SPR measurement, SPR angular scan (R-theta) and the time evolution of the reflectivity change at a fixed angle (R-t), were displayed to study the growth process of the PAn film. The angle shift of the resonance minimum recorded at each cathodic limit of cyclic potential scanning allows for the unambiguous measurement of the film growth. During cyclic potential scanning, the R-t curve was repeatedly modulated with the direction of the potential ramp as a result of the redox switch of the PAn film, and the amplitude of potential-modulated reflectivity change was well correlated with the cyclic number. The time differential of the R-t curve permits continuous monitoring of the film growth process. These results illustrate that the combined technique is suitable for studying the electropolymerization process of a conducting polymer.

Persistent spectral hole burning spectroscopy is applied to evaluate the low-temperature relaxation around the dye molecules doped in several types of polymers. The doped dye is tetraphenylporphine, and the measured polymers are vinyl polymers and main chain aromatic polymers. The changes of microscopic environments around the dye are evaluated from the changes in the hole profiles during temperature cycling experiments. The relaxation behavior of the polymers is discussed in relation to their chemical structures. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new kind of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed in aqueous solution through the pre-formed inclusion complexes (abbreviated CD . C-n) between alpha-, beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) and alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, n = 10, 14 and 18) was prepared successfully on gold electrodes. High-resolution H-1 NMR was used to confirm the formation of CD . C-n. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the resulting SAMs (denoted as M-CD . Cn). It was found that M-CD . Cn were more stable against repeated potential cycling in 0.5 M H2SO4 than SAMs of CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH (denoted as M-Cn), with a relative sequence of Mbeta-CD . Cn > Malpha-CD . Cn > M-Cn. In addition, an order of blocking the electron transfer between gold electrodes and redox couples (both Fe(CN)(6)(3-) and Ru(NH3)(6)(3+)) in solution, M-CD . C10 > M-CD . C14 > M-CD . In this paper, we have investigated the reactivity of the molybdenum oxide film toward some standard redox systems (e.g., ferrocene (Fc) and its derivatives) and observed a few interesting phenomena. The results demonstrate that the electrochemical behaviour of Fc and its derivatives at the oxide-modified carbon fiber (CF) microelectrode differs from that at a bare CF microelectrode, The conductivity of the molybdenum oxide film is seriously affected by the range and the direction of the potential scan, which influences the electrochemical behaviour of these redox systems at the film electrode. If the cycling potential is more positive than the reduction potential of the molybdenum oxide film, the reduction and oxidation peak currents of Fc and its derivatives could not be observed. The result indicates that the molybdenum oxide film on a microelectrode surface cannot transfer electrons between the surface of the electrode and Fc or its derivatives due to the existence of a high resistance between the interface in these potential ranges. On the other hand, if the lower limit of the scan potential was extended to a potential more negative than the reduction peak potential of the film, the oxidation peak of Fc or its derivatives appeared at about the potential relative to E-0 of Fc or its derivatives on the bare electrode, and the peak current is proportional to the concentration of these couples in the electrolyte. To our surprise, the peak height on the modified electrode is much larger than that on the bare CF microelectrode under the same conditions in the range of low concentration of these couples, and the oxidation peak potential of these couples is more negative than that on the bare CF microelectrode. On the basis of the experimental observation, we propose that these redox couples may undergo an interaction with the reduction state of the molybdenum oxide film. The electrochemistry of Prussian blue mixed in a polymer medium containing MClO4 (M = Li+, Na+, K+, TBA(+)) as the supporting electrolyte was studied by means of solid-state voltammetry. This approach is new in Prussian blue studies. The behavior of PB in polymer electrolytes is somewhat similar to the well-known behavior for an electrochemically synthesized PB film in aqueous media. Besides, K+, Li+ and Na+ ions can also transport through the crystal of PB because of its zeolitic nature. The transport of TBA(+) ions is possible. Kinetic control lies in the diffusion of cations in and out of the lattice of Prussian blue. Reduction waves of Prussian blue depend on both the size and type of cations. PB is very stable upon electrochemical cycling in polymer electrolytes and air. This system may be used in rechargeable batteries and electrochromic devices.

A compact non-stoichiometric molybdenum (VI, V) oxide of blue film was grown on carbon fiber (CF) microelectrode surface be cycling the potential between + 0.2V and - 0.70V in a freshly prepared Na2MoO4 solution containing 5 x 10(-3) mol/L H2SO4. The quantity-of the oxide is controlled by the charge passing the electrode. The electrochemical pretreatment of CF microelectrode not only mises the deposition velocity of molybdenum oxide on CF surface, but also improves greatly the cyclic voltammetric behavior of the molybdenum oxide film prior to the electrodeposition. The cathodic processes are believed to yield the hydrogen molybdenum oxide bronzes HxMoO3(0 < x < 2), or substoichiometric lower molybdenum oxides with the formula MoO3-y(0 < y < 1). The anodic response results from the reversible oxidation of molybdenum bronze/Mo(V) centers [or perhaps Mo(IV) in more reduced coatings], to Mo(VI). Further information was gained about the chemical composition and valent state of Mo from XPS and SEM.
