Fullerenes-extracted soot (FES) is the by-product of fullerenes production. Retention characteristics at different temperatures for 17 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on FES are measured. The adsorption and desorption efficiencies for VOCs on FES adsorbent tubes range from 40.8 to 117%, most of them being 100+/-20%. The values are compared with Tenax GR, an adsorbent commonly used in environmental analysis. FES can be used as an adsorbent of low cost to collect VOCs in environmental samples. The tube diameter in the reptation model is the distance between a given chain segment and its nearest segment in adjacent chains. This dimension is thus related to the cross-sectional area of polymer chains and the nearest approach among chains, without effects of thermal fluctuation and steric repulsion. Prior calculated tube diameters are much larger, about 5 times, than the actual chain cross-sectional areas. This is ascribed to the local freedom required for mutual rearrangement among neighboring chain segments. This tube diameter concept seems to us to infer a relationship to the corresponding entanglement spacing. Indeed, we report here that the critical molecular weight, M(c), for the onset of entanglements is found to be M(c) = 28 A/([R2]0/M), where A is the chain cross-sectional area and [R2]0 the mean-square end-to-end distance of a freely jointed chain of molecular weight M. The new, computed relationship between the critical number of backbone atoms for entanglement and the chain cross-sectional area of polymers, N(c) = A0,44, is concordant with the cross-sectional area of polymer chains being the parameter controlling the critical entanglement number of backbone atoms of flexible polymers.

Amphioxus Bblhx3 was identified as a LIM-homeobox gene expressed in gastrulae. Structural analysis suggested that it is a member of lhx3 but not of lhx1 gene group. Whole mount in situ hybridization revealed, that expression of Bblhx3 was initiated at the early gastrula stage and continued at least until 10-day larvae. Expression of Bblhx3 first appeared in the vegetal and future dorsal area in initial gastrulae and became restricted to the endoderm during gastrulation. In neurulae and early larvae, Bblhx3 was expressed in the developing neural tube, the notochord and preoral pit lineage. In 10-day larvae, Bblhx3 was expressed only in the preoral pit. This expression pattern is apparently distinct from that of vertebrate lhx3 genes that are not expressed during gastrulation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Marine sediment is the important sources and sinks of carbon. The inorganic carbon(IC) in marine sediments plays an important role in carbon cycling. In order to understand IC function in carbon cycling, sequential extraction method based on IC combined chemical strength difference were established to get five phases: NaCl phase (step I), NH3 - H2O phase (step II), NaOH phase (step III), NH2OH . HCl phase (step IV) and HCl phase(step V). The best extraction conditions were obtained by a series of experiments. Extractants were added into plastic centrifuge tubes in Step I - M, the capped tube were placed on a shaker table to keep the solids suspended for two hours. The suspended solution was separated by centrifugal, the residues were washed with water. The two supernatant were combined and the CO, was finally determined by volumetric analysis. The residues were transferred into conical flask in step IV and V, and then the extractants were added. The produced CO2 was adsorbed by saturated Ba(OH)(2) solution, and determined by volumetric analysis. This method for IC has a good precision in the analysis sediment samples.

Floral organogenesis and development of Przeivalskia langutica Maxim, endemic to China and Hyoscyamus niger L. , which belong to the tribe Hyoscyameae (Solanaceae), were studied using scanning electron microscope. They have three common characters of floral organ initiation and development: 1) initia-tion of the floral organs in the two species follows Hofmeister's rule; 2) the mode of corolla tube development belongs to the "late sympetaly" type; 3) primordia of the floral appendages initiated in a pentameroua pattern and acropetal order. But initiation of the calyx-lobe primordia showed different modes in these two species. The calyx-lobe primordia of H, niger have simultaneously whorled initiation, while those of P, tangulica have helical initiation, but the five calyx-lobe primordia form a ring after all five calyx-lobe primordia occur. The systematic significance of the present results in the genera Hyoscyamus and Przeivalskia is discussed in this paper.

A dense Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta membrane tube was prepared by the extruding method. Furthermore, a membrane reactor with this tubular membrane was successfully applied to partial oxidation of methane (POM) reaction, in which the separation of oxygen from air and the partial oxidation of methane are integrated in one process. At 875degreesC, 94% of methane conversion, 98% of CO selectivity, 95% of H-2 selectivity, and as high as 8.8 mL/(min (.) cm(2)) of oxygen flux were obtained. In POM reaction condition. the membrane tube shows a very good stability.
