Y0.9Eu0.1BO3 phosphor layers were deposited on monodisperse SiO2 particles of different sizes (300, 570, 900, and 1200 nm) via a sol-gel process, resulting in the formation of core-shell-structured SiO2@Y0.9Eu0.1BO3 particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra as well as lifetimes were employed to characterize the resulting composite particles. The results of XRD, FE-SEM, and TEM indicate that the 800 degrees C annealed sample consists of crystalline YBO3 shells and amorphous SiO2 cores, in spherical shape with a narrow size distribution. Under UV (240 nm) and VUV (172 nm) light or electron beam (1-6 kV) excitation, these particles show the characteristic D-5(0)-F-7(1-4) orange-red emission lines of Eu3+ with a quantum yield ranging from 36% (one-layer Y0.9Eu0.1BO3 on SiO2) to 54% (four-layer Y0.9Eu0.1BO3 on SiO2).

Trivalent dysprosium (Dy3+)-activated beta-gallium oxide (beta-Ga2O3) phosphors were synthesized by solid-state (SS), coprecipitation (CP), and citrate gel (CG) methods, respectively. The resulting beta-Ga2O3:Dy3+ phosphors were well characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and by photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence spectra. The phosphors prepared by different methods show different luminescence properties under the excitation of UV and low-voltage cathode rays. There exists an energy transfer from the beta-Ga2O3 host lattices to Dy3+, and the energy transfer efficiency was higher in the CG-derived phosphors than those of the SS- and CP-derived phosphors. Factors influencing the intensity of luminescence and the energy transfer efficiency from beta-Ga2O3 host to Dy3+ in beta-Ga2O3:Dy3+ phosphors were investigated in detail. It is shown that the CG method is the most respected process for the preparation of beta-Ga2O3:Dy3+ phosphors.

Nanocyrstalline Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors were prepared through a Pechini-type sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence spectra, and lifetimes were utilized to characterize the synthesized phosphors. XRD results reveal that the sample begins to crystallize at 900 degrees C and pure LaGaO3 phase can be obtained at 1000 degrees C. FESEM images indicate that the Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors are composed of aggregated spherical particles with sizes ranging from 40 to 80 nm. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light and low-voltage electron beams (0.5-3 kV), the Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors show the characteristic emissions from the LaGaO3 host lattice and the Tb3+ (D-5(3,4)-F-7(6,5,4,3) transitions). The emission colors of Tb3+-doped LaGaO3 phosphors can be tuned from blue to green by changing the excitation wavelength of ultraviolet light and the doping concentration of Tb3+ to some extent. Relevant luminescence mechanisms are discussed.

Monodisperse, core-shell-structured SiO2@NaGd(WO4)(2):Eu3+ particles were prepared by the sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and low-voltage cathodoluminescence (CL) as well as time-resolved PL spectra and lifetimes. PL and CL study revealed that the core-shell-structured SiO2@NaGd (WO4)(2):Eu3+ particles show strong red emission dominated by the D-5(0) - F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ at 614 nm with a lifetime of 0.74 ms. The PL and CL emission intensity can be tuned by the coating number of NaGd(WO4)(2):Eu3+ phosphor layers on SiO2 and by accelerating voltage and the filament current, respectively.

Nanocrystalline GdPO4 : Eu3+ phosphor layers were coated on non-aggregated, monodisperse and spherical SiO2 particles by Pechini sol-gel method, resulting in the formation of core-shell structured SiO2@GdPO4 : Eu3+ particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), low-voltage cathodoluminescence (CL), time-resolved PL spectra and lifetimes were used to characterize the core-shell structured materials. Both XRD and FT IR results indicate that GdPO4 layers have been successfully coated on the SiO2 particles, which can be further verified by the images of FESEM and TEM. Under UV light excitation, the SiO2@GdPO4: Eu3+ phosphors show orange-red luminescence with Eu(3+)sD(0)-F-7(1) (593 nm) as the most prominent group. The PL excitation and emission spectra suggest that an energy transfer occurs from Gd3+ to Eu3+ in SiO2@GdPO4: Eu3+ phosphors. The obtained core-shell phosphors have potential applications in FED and PDP devices.

Nano-submicrostructured CaWO4, CaWO4 : Pb2+ and CaWO4 : Tb3+ particles were prepared by polyol method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), photoluminescence (PL), cathodo-luminescence (CL) spectra and PL lifetimes. The results of XRD indicate that the as-prepared samples are well crystallized with the scheelite structure of CaWO4. The FE-SEM images illustrate that CaWO4 and CaWO4 : Pb2+ and CaWO4 : Tb3+ powders are composed of spherical particles with sizes around 260, 290, and 190 nm respectively, which are the aggregates of smaller nanoparticles around 10-20 nm. Under the UV light or electron beam excitation, the CaWO4 powders exhibits a blue emission band with a maximum at about 440 nm. When the CaWO4 particles are doped with Pb2+, the intensity of luminescence is enhanced to some extent and the luminescence band maximum is red shifted to 460 nm. Tb3+-doped CaWO4 particles show the characteristic emission of Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J=6-3) transitions due to an energy transfer from WO42- groups to Tb3+.

The Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ and Li+-doped Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) as well as lifetimes, was utilized to characterize the resulting phosphors. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light, the Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ and Li+-doped Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ show the characteristic emissions of Eu3+ (D-5(0)-F-7(1,2,3) transitions dominated by D-5(0)-F-7(1) at 593 nm) and Dy3+ (F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2),(13/2) transitions dominated by F-4(9/2)-H-6(15/2) at 494 nm), respectively. The incorporation of Li+ ions into the Ba2GdNbO6: Eu3+/Dy3+ phosphors has enhanced the PL intensities depending on the doping concentration of Li+, and the highest emission was obtained in Ba2Gd0.9NbO6: 0.10Eu(3+), 0.01Li(+) and Ba2Gd0.95NbO6: 0.05Dy(3+), 0.07Li(+), respectively. An energy level diagram was proposed to explain the luminescence process in the phosphors.

Tb3+-doped LiYF4 films were deposited on quartz glass by a simple sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), photoluminescence spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 300 degrees C and fully crystallized at 400 degrees C. AFM and FESEM images of singly coated LiY0.95Tb0.05F4 annealed at 400 degrees C indicated that the film is uniform and crack-free films with average grain size of 90 nm, root mean square roughness of 11 nm and thickness of 120 nm. The doped Tb3+ ions showed its characteristic emission in crystalline LiYF4 films, i.e., D-5(3), F--7(4)J (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) emissions. The optimum doping concentration of the Tb3+ was determined to be 5.0 mol% of Y3+ in LiYF4 films.

SrLa1-xRExGa3O7 (RE = EU3+, Tb3+) phosphor films were deposited on quartz glass substrates by a simple Pechim sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 700 degrees C and crystallized fully at 900 degrees C. The results of FNR spectra were in agreement with those of XRD. Uniform and crack-free films annealed at 900 degrees C were obtained with average grain size of 80 nm, root mean square roughness of 46 nm and thickness of 130 nm The RE ions showed their characteristic emission in crystalline SrLa1-xRExGa3O7 films, i.e., Eu3+ D-0-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4), Tb3+5D4 -(7) F-J (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) emissions, respectively. The optimum concentrations (x) of Eu3+ and Tb3+ were determined to be 50, and 80 mol% in SrLa(1-x)RE(x)GGa(3)O(7) films, respectively.

Well-faceted hexagonal ZnO microprisms with regular interior space have been successfully prepared by a template-free hydrothermal synthetic route. The morphologies of the products depend on the experimental conditions such as the solvent, the concentration of ammonia aqueous solution, and the reaction temperature. Through manipulation of the aging time, the as-prepared ZnO can be controlled as a monodispersed hexagonal twinning solid or as hollow microprisms. Moreover, the evolution process of the hollow ZnO nanoarchitecture after reaction for 2, 6, 12, and 24 h has been investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A possible growth mechanism has also been proposed and discussed. Furthermore, the photoluminescence (PL) measurement exhibits the unique emitting characteristic of hollow ZnO nanostructures.

Effect of cerium on the microstructure and electrochemical performance of the Ti0.25V0.35-xCexCr0.1Ni0.3 (x = 0, 0.005) electrode alloy was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (FESEM-EDS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. On the basis of XRD and FESEM-EDS analysis, the alloy was mainly composed of V-based solid solution with body-centered-cubic structure and TiNi-based secondary phase. Ce did not exist in two phases, instead, it existed as Ce-rich small white particles, with irregular edges, distributed near the grain boundaries of the V-based solid solution phase. Discharge capacity, cycle stability, and high-rate discharge ability of the alloy electrode were effectively improved with the addition of Ce at 293 K. It was very surprising that the charge retention was abnormal with larger discharge capacity after standing at the open circuit for 24 h. EIS indicated that addition of Ce improved the dynamic performance, which caused the charge transfer resistance (R-T) to decrease and exchange current density (I-0) to increase markedly. The exchange current density of the electrochemical reaction on the alloy surface with Ce addition was about 2.07 and 3.10 times larger than that of the alloy without Ce at 303 and 343 K, respectively.

Various metallized nanostructures (such as rings, wires with controllable lengths, spheres) have been successfully fabricated by coating metallic nanolayers onto soft nanotemplates through simple electroless methods. In particular, bimetallic nanostructures have been obtained by using simple methods. The multiple functional polymeric nanostructures, were obtained through the self-assembly of polystyrene/poly(4-vinyl pyridine) triblock copolymer (P4VP-b-PS-b-P4VP) in selective media by changing the common solvent properties. By combining field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization, it was confirmed that polymer/metal and bimetallic (Au@Ag) core-shell nanostructures could be achieved by chemical metal deposition method.

La0.5Ba0.5MnO3 products with novel flowerlike, microcube, and nanocube structures were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route by controlling the alkalinity of the reaction solutions. The synthesized products were systematically studied by X-ray powder diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results showed that the formation of the flowerlike structures with a layer assembly experienced a nucleation-aggregation-crystallization growth process, while the cubic structures experienced a nucleation-crystallization growth process due to the effect of different alkalinity in the reaction solutions. The higher alkalinity also led to a decrease in the size in the cubic structures. Suitable temperature and pressure were demonstrated to be crucial to the formation of the flowerlike structures by carrying out further control experiments. The measurement of the magnetic properties of three samples obtained at different alkaline conditions indicated that the size of the La0.5Ba0.5MnO3 products had an obvious influence on their properties; however, the dependence of the properties upon the morphology of the La0.5Ba0.5MnO3 products was minor.
