In this work, the LB films based on heteropolytungstate of Dy and Sm have been prepared. The X-ray diffraction shows the LB films have a highly ordered lamella structure. The luminescence characteristics of the LB films were studied. The charge transfer bands of LB films are in higher energies than those of the corresponding solids. It is noticed that the yellow to blue intensity ratio (Y:B) of Dy3+ in the LB films is different from that of the solid. The differences in the spectra show that the Dy3+ site symmetry in LB film was changed due to the interaction between the surfactant and the polyanions. The differences could also be found in the luminescence spectra of the LB films of Sm complex.

Copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide was carried out employing (RC6H4COO)(3)Y/glycerin/ZnEt2 (R = -H, -CH3, NO2, -OH) ternary catalyst systems. The feature of yttrium carboxylates (ligand, substituent and its position on the aromatic ring) is of great importance in the final copolymerization. Appropriate design of substituent and position of the ligand in benzoate-based yttrium complex can adjust the microstructure of aliphatic polycarbonate in a moderate degree, where the head-to-tail linkage in the copolymer is adjustable from 68.4 to 75.4%. The steric factor of the ligand in the yttrium complex is crucial for the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer, probably due to the fact that the substituent at 2 and 4-position would disturb the coordination or insertion of the monomer, lead the copolymer with broad molecular distribution. Based on the study of ultraviolet-visible spectra of the ternary catalyst in various solvents, it seems that the absorption band at 240-255 nm be closely related to the active species of the rare earth ternary catalysts.

A poly(thionine) modified screen-printed carbon electrode has been prepared by an electrooxidative polymerization of thionine in neutral phosphate buffer. The modified electrodes are found to give stable and reproducible electrocatlytic responses to NADH and exhibit good stability. Several techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), have been employed to characterize the poly(thionine) film. Further, the modified screen-printed carbon electrode was found to be promising as an amperometric detector for the flow injection analysis (FIA) of NADH, typically with a dynamic range of 5-100 muM.

The VUV-UV spectra of rare earth ions activated calcium borophosphate, CaBPO5:RE (RE = Ce3+, sm(3+), Eu2+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+) were determined. The bands at about 155 nm in the VUV excitation spectra are attributed to the host lattice absorptions. The bands at 166 and 190 nm for the sample CaBPO5:Sm have been considered as related to the f-d transition and the charge transfer band (CTB) of Sm3+ ions, and the band at 169 nm for the sample CaBPO5:Dy is assumed to be connected with the f-d transition of the Dy3+ ions in CaBPO5. The partial reduction of Eu3+ CaBPO5:Eu prepared by high temperature solid state reaction in air is confirmed by the VUV-UV spectra.

Rare-earth (Eu3+, Tb3+)-doped Ca2Y8(SiO4)(6)O-2 luminescent thin films were dip-coated on silicon and quartz glass substrates through a sol-gel route. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and luminescence excitation and emission spectra as well as luminescence decays were used to characterize the resultant films. The results of XRD reveal that these films remain amorphous below 700 degreesC, begin to crystallize at 800 degreesC, and crystallize completely around 1000 degreesC with an oxyapatite structure. The grain structure of the film can be seen clearly from SEM micrographs, where particles with various shape and average size of 250 nm can be resolved. The Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions show their characteristic red (D-5(0)-F-7(2)) and green (D-5(4)-F-7(5)) emission in the films with a quenching concentration of 10 and 6 mol% (of Y3+), respectively. The lifetime of Eu-3divided by increases with the heat treatment temperature front 700 to 1100 degreesC.

The cyclization of neoprene was achieved with the aid of a cationic catalyst system based on diethylaluminum chloride (Et2AlCl) and an organic chloride, allyl chloride (CH2=CHCH2Cl) or benzyl chloride (C6H5CH2Cl). The main parameters of the cyclization process were investigated. Elastomers with low intrinsic viscosity, ready solubility and some gelling were obtained. Xylene was a good solvent for the cyclization process, which took place in a very short time (less than or equal to5 min). The products were characterized with IR, H-1-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The polycyclic structure was determined. The degree of cyctization and the incorporated solvent content were estimated with a H-1-NMR method.

The three scaling parameters described in Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT), T*, P* and rho* of pure polystyrene (PS), pure poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and their mixtures are obtained by fitting corresponding experimental pressure volume-temperature data with equation-of-state of SLLFT. A modified combining rule in SLLFT used to match the volume per mer, v* of the PS/PPO mixtures was advanced and the enthalpy of mixing and Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter were calculated using the new rule. It is found that the difference between the new rule and the old one presented by Sanchez and Lacombe is quite small in the calculation of the enthalpy of mixing and FH interaction parameter and the effect of volume-combining rule on the calculation of thermodynamic properties is much smaller than that of energy-combining rule. But the relative value of interaction parameter changes much due to the new volume-based combining rule. This effect can affect the position of phase diagram very much, which is reported elsewhere [Macromolecules 34 (2001) 6291]

A method was developed for the determination of trace and ultratrace amounts of REE. Cd. In. Tl. Th. Nb, Ta. Zr and Hf in soils and sediments. With NaOH-Na2O2 as the flux. Ti(OH)(4)-Fe(OH)(3) co-precipitation as the preconcentration technique and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for measurement, the whole procedure was concise and suitable for batch analysis of multi-element solutions. An investigation was carried out of the Ti(OH)(4)-Fe(OH)(3) co-precipitation system, and the results obtained showed that the natural situation of Ti tightly coexisting with Nb. Ta, Zr and Hf in geological samples plays a very important role in the complete co-precipitation of the four elements. The accuracy of this procedure was established using six Chinese soil and sediment certified reference materials (GSS and GSD). and the relative errors between the found and certified values were mostly below 10%.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a rare-earth-containing polyoxometalate Na-9[Eu(W5O18)(2)] (EW) and Poly (allyamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared by layer-by-layer self-assembly from dilute aqueous solutions. The fabrication process of the EW/PAH multilayer films was followed by UV-vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry, which show that the deposition process is linear and highly reproducible from layer to layer. An average EW/PAH bilayer thickness of ca. 2.1 nm was determine,by ellipsometry. In addition, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of the EW/PAH film indicates that the film sufface is relatively uniform and smooth. The photoluminescent properties of these films were also investigated by fluoresence spectroscopy.

Rare earth complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, phen: 1.10-phenanthroline) hits been incorporated into unmodified MCM-41 and modified MCM-41s by aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or N-[(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine(TEPED). Thus, the assemblies of unmodified or modified MCM-41s with rare earth (RE) complex have been obtained. XRD spectra. NMR spectra. diffuse reflectance spectra. and the luminescence spectra were used to characterize the pure RE complex and the corresponding assemblies. The assemblies have better luminescence properties under UV irradiation. and their fluorescence lifetimes on the excited state are longer than that of the corresponding pure complex. The possible mechanisms are also discussed in the context.

Rare earth complex (C5H9C9H6)(3)SmCl-Li+ (THF)(4)( I ) was synthesized by reacting anhydrous SmCl3 with two equivalents of C5H9C9H6Li. From mix-solvent of THF and hexane, red color single crystals were obtained. The crystal belongs to a cubic system, space group P2(1)3 with unit cell parameters a= b=c= 1. 754 0(2) nm, alpha=beta=gamma=90degrees, V=5. 396 4(11) nm(3), Z = 4. The ten-coordinated samarium atom is bonded to three cyclopentylindenyl rings and a chlorine atom to form the anionic part of the title complex, ring centroids and the chlorine atom form a tortured tetrahedron around samarium. In the cationic part, lithium atom coordinates to four oxygen atoms of THF molecules to form a normal tetrahedron. The Sm-C(within the same ring) distance varies from 0. 268 to 0. 299 nm.

Rare-earth and lead ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Pb2+) doped Ca2Y8 (SiO4)(6)O-2 and Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2 thin films have been dip- coated on silicon and quartz glass substrates through the sol- gel route. X- Ray diffraction (XRD), TG- DTA, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), FT- IR and luminescence excitation and emission spectra as well as luminescence decays were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD reveal that these films remain amorphous below 700 degreesC, begin to crystallize at 800 degreesC and crystallize completely around 1000 degreesC with an oxyapatite structure. The grain structure of the film can be seen clearly from SEM and AFM micrographs, where particles with various shapes and average size of 250 nm can be resolved. Eu3+ and Tb3+ show their characteristic red (D-5(0)-F-7(2)) and green (D-5(4) - F-7(5)) emission in the films with a quenching concentration of 10 and 6 mol% (of Y3+), respectively. The lifetime and emission intensity of Eu3+ increase with the temperature treatment from 700 to 1100 degreesC, while those of Tb3+ show a maximum at 800 degreesC. Energy transfer phenomena have been observed by activating the oxyapatite film host- lattice Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2 with Tb3+ (Dy3+). In addition, Pb2+ can sensitize the Gd3+ sublattice in Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2.

Transparent organic-inorganic hybrid monoliths containing rare-earth complexes (Eu(TTA)(3)Phen, Tb(Sal)(3)) were prepared via the sol-gel technique. It could be observed by transmission electron microscopy that the fluorescent particles are distributed in the matrix at the microscopic level. The matrix is composed of organic-inorganic semiinterpenetrating networks, i.e., PHEMA-SiO2 system. The fluorescence emission spectra of samples are similar to those from corresponding powdered Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes, and the half-widths of the strongest bands are less than 10 nm, which indicates that the monolith exhibits high fluorescence intensity and color purity. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra exhibit no obvious change with decreasing nanoparticle size of the rare-earth complex. The fluorescence lifetimes of samples are longer than pure Eu(III), Tb(III) complexes, respectively. Samples irradiated with an UV lamp (365 nm) are still transparent but become bright red and green in color due to fluorescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and silica (SiO2) organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been synthesized by sol-gel approach and the crystalline behavior of PCL in the silica networks has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The degree of PCL crystallinity in the PCL/SiO2 hybrid networks reduces with the increase of SiO2 content. PCL is in an amorphous state when the concentration of PCL is lower than 40wt% in the hybrid materials. The melting points of PCL in the networks are lower than that of pure PCL,but they almost have a same value. WAXD results show that when the PCL weight percentage is higher than 40wt% in the hybrid samples, part of PCL can crysatllize and the PCL crystallites are almost in a same size. That means the crystalline movement of PCL molecular chains is strictly confined by the porous gel. The crystalline PCL in the hybrid samples is relatively free from the composition of the materials, because the crystallization temperature and melting point of PCL of the samples are almost equal, and the crystalline PCL of different samples has the same crystalline structure and the same crystallite sizes L-110 and L-200, that means the crystalline part of PCL in the hybrid samples is unperturbed and the porous silica gel gives enough space for PCL to crystallize into the same crystalline structure and the same size crystallites.
