A new europium (III) complex Eu(HFNH)(3)Phen (HFNH: 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6-heptafluoro-1-(2-naphthyl) hexane-1,3-dione; phen: 1, 10-phenanthroline) was synthesized and its triboltuninescent phenomenon was observed. Photoluminescence and triboluminescence spectra were successfully determined. The most intense triboluminescent emission originates front the transition of the, central Eu3+ ion from D-5(0) level to F-7(2) level. The triboluminescent spectrum is basically similar to that of photoluminescence, which correlates with the disorders of F atoms.

The complexes [Cu(dnpb)(DPEphos)](+)(X-) (dnpb and DPEphos are 2,9-di-n-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline and bis[2-(diphenyl-phosphino)phenyl]ether, respectively, and X- is BF4-, ClO4-, or PF6-) can form high quality films with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 71 +/- 7%. Their electroluminescent properties are studied using the device-structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/complex/metal cathiode. The devices emit green light efficiently, with an emission maximum of 523 nm, and work in the mode of light-emitting electrochemical cells. The response time of the devices greatly depends on the driving voltage, the counterions, and the thickness of the complex film. After pre-biasing at 25 V for 40 s, the devices turn on instantly, with a turn-on voltage of ca. 2.9 V. A current efficiency of 56 cd A(-1) and an external quantum efficiency of 16% are realised with Al as the cathode. Using a low-work-function metal as the cathode can significantly enhance the brightness of the device almost without affecting the turn-on voltage and current efficiency. With a Ca cathode, a brightness of 150 cd m(-2) at 6 V and 4100 cd m(-2) at 25 V is demonstrated. The electroluminescent performance of these types of complexes is among the best so far for transition metal complexes with counterions.

The near-infrared (NIR) luminescent lanthanide ions, such as Er(III), Nd(III), and Yb(III), have been paid much attention for the potential use in the optical communications or laser systems. For the first time, the NIR-luminescent Ln(dbm)(3)phen complexes have been covalently bonded to the ordered mesoporous materials MCM-41 and SBA-15 via a functionalized phen group phen-Si (phen-Si = 5-(N,N-bis-3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl)ureyl-1,10-phenanthroline; dbm = dibenzoylmethanate; Ln = Er, Nd, Yb). The synthesis parameters X = 12 and Y = 6 h (X denotes Ln(dbM)(3)(H2O)(2)/phen-MCM-41 molar ratio or Ln(dbM)(3)(H2O)(2)/phenSBA-15 molar ratio and Y is the reaction time for the ligand exchange reaction; phen-MCM-41 and phenSBA-15 are phen-functionalized MCM-41 and SBA-15 mesoporous materials, respectively) were selected through a systematic and comparative study. The derivative materials, denoted as Ln(dbM)(3)phen-MCM-41 and Ln(dbm)(3)phen-SBA-15 (Ln = Er, Nd, Yb), were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), elemental analysis, and fluorescence spectra. Upon excitation of the ligands absorption bands, all these materials show the characteristic NIR luminescence of the corresponding lanthanide ions through the intramolecular energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions.

A novel self-assembled layer consisting of water tetramers and nitrate anions has been observed in the [Co(1,10-phenanthroline)(2)(NO3)]center dot(NO)(3)center dot 4H(2)O complex. X-ray crystallography and FT-IR spectroscopy indicate that although the water tetramers exist in an energetically less stable uudd configuration, the anionic host environments may play an important role in the formation and stabilization of the water clusters.

Stacked organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on a europium complex Eu(TTA)(3) (Tmphen) (TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetone,Tmphen = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) were fabricated. In this stacked OLEDs, Li:BCP/V2O5 was used the intermediate charge generation layer sandwiched between two identical emissive units consisting of TPD/CBP:DCJTB:Eu(TTA)(3)(Tmphen)/BCP. As expected, the brightness and electroluminescent (EL) current efficiency were approximately enhanced by double times that of conventional single-unit devices. The stacked OLEDs showed the maximum luminance up to 3000 cd/m(2) at a current density of 190 mA/cm(2) and a current efficiency of 14.5 cd/A at a current density of 0.08 mA/cm(2). At the brightness of 100 cd/m(2), the current efficiency reached 10 cd/A at a current density of 1.6 mA/cm2.

An efficient organic light-emitting device using a trivalent europium (Eu) complex Eu(Tmphen)(TTA)(3) (TTA=thenoyltrifluoroacetone, Tmphen=3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) as the dopant emitter was fabricated. The devices were a multilayer structure of indium tin oxide/N,N-diphenyl-N,N-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-biphenyl-4,4-diamine (40 nm)/ Eu complex:4,4-N,N-dicarbazole-biphenyl (1%, 30 nm)/2,9-dimethyl,4,7-diphenyl-1,10phenanthroline (20 nm)/AlQ (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm). A pure red light with a peak of 612 nm and a half bandwidth of 3 nm, which is the characteristic emission of trivalent europium ion, was observed. The devices show the maximum luminance up to 800 cd/m(2), an external quantum efficiency of 4.3%, current efficiency of 4.7 cd/A, and power efficiency of 1.6 lm/W. At the brightness of 100 cd/m(2), the quantum efficiency reaches 2.2% (2.3 cd/A).

The oxamido-bridged heterobinuclear copper(II)-nickel(II) complex, [Cu(oxbe)Ni(phen)(2)]ClO4.3H(2)O (1) and homotrinuclear nickel(11) complex {[Ni(oxbe)](2)Ni(H2O)(2)}.2.5DMF (2) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, EPR. and electronic spectra and magnetic susceptibility, where H(3)oxbe is dissymmetrical ligand N-benzoato-N'-(2-aminoethyl)ox-amido, phen = 1.10-phenanthroline, DMF = dimethylformamide. Complex I has an extended oxamido-bridged structure consisting of planar copper(II) and octahedral nickel(II) ions. The chi(M) and mu(eff) versus T plots of 1 is typical of an antiferromagnetically coupled Cu(II)-Ni(II,) pair with a spin-doublet ground state, and magnetic analysis leads to J = -57.1 cm(-1). The molecular structure of 2 is centrosymmetrical, with one octahedral nickel atom lying at an inversion center and two terminal Ni(II) atoms in approximately square planar environment. Through the hydrogen bonds and pi- pi stacking interactions, a 2D supramolecular structure is formed.

Novel composite resins possessing good luminescent properties have been synthesized through a free radical copolymerization of styrene, alpha-methylacrylic acid and the binary or ternary complexes of lanthanide ions (Eu3+ and Tb3+). These polymer-based composite resins not only possess good transparency and mechanical performance but also exhibit an intense narrow band emission of lanthanide complexes under UV excitation. We characterized the molecular structure, physical and mechanical performance, and luminescent properties of the composite resins. Spectra investigations indicate that alpha-methyl-acrylic acid act as both solubilizer and ligand. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the lanthanide complexes show superior emission lines and higher intensities in the resin matrix than in the corresponding pure complex powders, which can be attributed to the restriction of molecular motion of complexes by the polymer chain networks and the exclusion of water molecules from the complex. We also found that the luminescence intensity decreased with increasing content of alpha-methylacrylic acid in the copolymer system. The lifetime of the lanthanide complexes also lengthened when they were incorporated in the polymer matrix. In addition, we found that the relationships between emission intensity and Tb (Eu) content exhibit some extent of concentration quenching.

In this paper, silica-based transparent organic-inorganic hybrid materials were prepared via the sol-gel process. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) were used as the inorganic and organic precursors, respectively. The terbium complex, Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen (Tfacac = 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone, phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline) was successfully doped into organically modified silicate (ormosil) matrix derived from TEOS and GPTMS, and the luminescent properties of the resultant ormosil composite phosphors [ormosil/Th(Tfacac)(3)phen] were investigated compared with those of the Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen incorporated into SiO2 derived from TEOS (labeled as silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen). Both kinds of the materials show the characteristic green emission of Tb3+ ion. The luminescence behavior of the resultant composite products was dependent on the matrix composition. The optimized lanthanide complex concentration in the ormosil/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen was increased compared with in silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen. Furthermore, the lifetime of Tb3+ in Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen, silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen and ormosil/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen follows the sequence: onmosil/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen>silica/Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen>pure Tb(Tfacac)(3)phen.

A new tetrakis praseodymium(tu) complex Pr(TFNB)(3)Phen has been synthesized, in which TFNB is 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione and Phen is 1,10-phenanthroline. Its crystal structure and luminescent spectra were successfully determined and investigated. The typical antenna effect existing in the luminescence of Pr(TFNB)(3)Phen was revealed by the study of the UV-Vis absorption spectra of ligands and the excitation spectrum of Pr(TFNB)(3)Phen.

In this study, a terbium complex, Tb(acac)(3)bath (acac: acetylacetone, bath: 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline), was synthesized and its luminescent properties were investigated compared with the reported terbium complex, Tb(acac)(3)phen (phen: phenanthroline). When it was used as an emitting material in organic electroluminescent (EL) device, the triple-layer-type device with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium-tin oxide)/TPD (N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine)/Tb(acac)(3)bath/Alq(3) (tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum)/Al (aluminum) exhibited bright characteristic emission of terbium ion upon applying DC voltage. An apparent difference was observed between the photoluminescence spectrum and the EL spectrum. The EL device exhibited some characteristics of diode and the maximum luminance of 77 cd/m(2) was obtained at 17 V.

A new kind of luminescent organic-inorganic hybrid material (denoted Hybrid I) consisting of europium 1,10-phenanthroline complexes covalently attached to a silica-based network was prepared by a sol-gel process. 1,10-Phenanthroline grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate was used as one of the precursors for the preparation of an organic-inorganic hybrid materials. For comparison purposes, the hybrid material (denoted Hybrid II) in which phenanthroline was not grafted onto the silica backbone of the frameworks was also prepared. Elemental analysis; NMR, FT-IR, UV/vis absorption, and luminescence spectroscopies, and luminescence decay analysis were used to characterize the obtained hybrid materials. It is shown that the homogeneity of Hybrid I is superior to that of Hybrid II, and a higher concentration europium can be incorporated into Hybrid I than Hybrid II. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (283 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0-4) transition lines as a result of the efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the EU3+ in Hybrid I. The number of water molecules coordinated to the europium ion was estimated, and the structure of the as-synthesized Hybrid I was predicted on the basis of the experimental results.

In this paper, we report on a solid phase time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay chelate reagent-4,7-bis(chlorosulfophenyl)1, 10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid (BCPDA), which is suitable as a fluorescent labeling agent. The five step synthesis product of BCPDA was presented for improving the purity of the product based on the three step synthesis product. The approach involves chlorization, hydrolyzing the ester, preparing disodium, carboxylate to diacid, sulfonation. The yield of five step product is 99 %, 45 %, 94 %, 95 %, 80 % respectively. The structure and purity of product was characterized by the melting point, IR,H-1 NMR, UV spectrum, element analysis, and proved to be consistent with the structure predictal.
