A novel AB(3)-type monomer was prepared from gallic acid and DL-2-aminobutyric acid, and used for the synthesis of the biocompatible hyperbranched poly(ester-amide)s by self-polycondensation. The polymers were characterized via FTIR and NMR spectroscopy and thermal analysis, and the average degree of branching of the polymers was estimated to be 0.75. The polymers with abundant acetyl end groups were found to be amorphous with lower intrinsic viscosity, better thermal stability and excellent solubility.

A new electrogenerated chemiluminescence biosensor was fabricated by immobilizing ECL reagent Ru(bPY)(3)(2+) and alcohol dehydrogenase in sol-gel/chitosan/poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) organically modified composite material. The component PSS was used to immobilize ECL reagent Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) by ion-exchange, while the addition of chitosan was to prevent the cracking of conventional sol-gel-derived glasses and provide biocompatible microenvironment for alcohol dehydrogenase. Such biosensor combined enzymatic selectivity with the sensitivity of ECL detection for quantification of enzyme substrate and it was much simpler than previous double-layer design. The detection limit was 9.3 x 10(-6) M for alcohol (S/N = 3) with a linear range from 2.79 x 10(-5) to 5.78 x 10(-2) M. With ECL detection, the biosensor exhibited wide linear range, high sensitivity and good stability.

The structure of the title compound, [Cu2Cl2(C12H10N2)](n), contains infinite CuCl staircase-like chains, which lie about inversion centres. The trans-1,2-di-4-pyrid-ylethyl-ene mol-ecules also lie about inversion centres and connect the CuCl chains through Cu-N coordination bonds into a two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid network. The planar sheets are stacked along the c axis and associated through weak C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl inter-actions. The results show a reliable structural motif with controllable separation of the CuCl chains by variation of the length of the ligand.

The title compound, {[Mn-2(CH3CO2)(4)(C10H8N2)(2)](H2O)-H-.}(n), is a one-dimensional coordination polymer with a ladder-like structure. Two Mn-II atoms, each coordinated by a chelating acetate ligand, are bridged by two bidentate acetate ligands to form a centrosymmetric [Mn-2(CH3CO2)(4)] unit. Two 4,4'-bipyridine ligands link the [Mn-2(CH3CO2)(4)] units through Mn-N bonds to generate a molecular ladder. The water O atom lies on a crystallographic twofold rotation axis.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a rare-earth-containing polyoxometalate Na-9[Eu(W5O18)(2)] (EW) and Poly (allyamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared by layer-by-layer self-assembly from dilute aqueous solutions. The fabrication process of the EW/PAH multilayer films was followed by UV-vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry, which show that the deposition process is linear and highly reproducible from layer to layer. An average EW/PAH bilayer thickness of ca. 2.1 nm was determine,by ellipsometry. In addition, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of the EW/PAH film indicates that the film sufface is relatively uniform and smooth. The photoluminescent properties of these films were also investigated by fluoresence spectroscopy.

Full Paper: Two new 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl-based dianhydrides, i.e., 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride (BNDADA) and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxybenzoyloxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride (BNDEDA), were synthesized and polymerized with various aromatic diamines to afford polyimides through the traditional two-step method. The polyimides with inherent viscosities ranging from 0.27 to 0.70 dl . g(-1) showed excellent solubilities in polar solvents such as DMAc, DMSO and NMP etc., except of the poly(ester imide) prepared from BNDEDA and benzidine. Poly(ester imide)s based on BNDEDA can also be readily dissolved in weakly polar solvents such as THF, CH2Cl2 and CHCl3. The glass transition temperatures of these polyimides are in the range of 210-310 degrees C; the 5% weight loss temperatures are in the range of 390-465 degrees C in nitrogen and 384-447 degrees c in air. These polymers from light yellow, tough films that were transparent above 365 nm. The effects of different flexible units attached in the 2- and 2'-positions, i.e., amide, ester and ether, on the properties of the polyimides obtained are discussed.

The effect of entanglements on the glass transition and structural relaxation behaviors has been studied for polystyrene (PS) and phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) samples by fast evaporation of the solution of concentrations varying from above the overlapping concentration to far below it, and compared to the results we have studied previously in PC. It has been found that for all the polymers we have studied, in the concentrated solution region, the T-g of the samples obtained from solution are independent of the change of concentration and are very close to that of normal bulk samples, whereas in the dilute solution region the T-g of the samples decrease with the logarithm of decreasing concentration. The critical concentrations that divide the two distinct regions for the three polymers are 0.9% g/mL for PC, 0.1% g/mL for PS, and 1% g/mL for PES-C. The decrease of T-g of the samples is interpreted by the decrease of intermolecular entanglements as the isolation of polymer chains, and the entanglement of polymer chains restrained the mobility of the segments. The structural relaxation behavior of the polymers is also found to be different from that of normal bulk samples. The enthalpies of single-chain samples are lower than that of the bulk ones, which correspond to the lower glass transition temperature; the peaks are lower and broader, and the relaxed enthalpy is much lower as compared to that of bulk samples. In the three polymers we have studied, the influence of change of entanglements on both the decrease in glass transition temperature and relaxed enthalpy is the most significant for PS and the least for PES-C. It is indicated that the interactions in the flexible polymers are weak; thus, the restraint of the entanglements on the mobility of the segments plays a more important role in the flexible polymers, and the change of entanglement in the flexible polymers has a more significant influence on the physical properties.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(ii) [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)] immobilized in poly(p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)-silica-Triton X-100 composite films was investigated. The cooperative action of PSS, sol-gel and Triton X-100 attached Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to the electrode strongly, and the presence of Triton X-100 prevented drying fractures of the sol-gel films during gelation and even on repeated wet-dry cycles. The modified electrode was used for the ECL detection of oxalate, tripropylamine (TPA) and NADH in a flow injection analysis (FIA) system with a newly designed flow cell. The detection scheme exhibited good stability, short response time and high sensitivity. Detection limits were 0.1, 0.1 and 0.5 mu mol L-1 for oxalate, TPA and NADH, respectively, and the linear concentration range extended from 0.001 to 1 mmol L-1 for the three analytes. Applications of the flow cell in ECL and electrochemical detection, as well as the immobilization of reagents based on the cooperative action, are suggested.

A poly(o-toluidine) (POT)/2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) composite was prepared. When POT and DMcT are mixed in a proper solvent, POT in a medium-oxidation state is reduced, and DMcT in turn is oxidized to its soluble dimer when the molar ratio of DMcT to POT is higher than 0.5. Therefore, the composite was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and exhibited very high electroactivity, two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure POT and three orders of magnitude higher than that of pure DMcT. Molecular-level contact between POT and DMcT is the reason for the improved catalytic effect of POT on DMcT, compared to that of polyaniline on DMcT. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society. Chemorheology and corresponding models for an epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) system were investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a cone-and-plate rheometer. For this system, the reported four-parameter chemorheological model and modified WLF chemorheological model can only be used in an isothermal or nonisothermal process, respectively. In order to predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle actually used, a new model based on the combination of the four-parameter model and the modified WLF model was developed. The combined model can predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle more accurately than the above two models. In order to simplify the establishment of this model, a new five-parameter chemorheological model was then developed. The parameters in this five-parameter model can be determined through very few rheology and DSC experiments. This model is practicable to describe the resin viscosity variation for isothermal, nonisothermal, or stepwise temperature cure cycles accurately. The five-parameter chemorheological model has also successfully been used in the E-PEK systems with two other curing agents, i.e., the diamine curing agent with the addition of a boron trifluride monoethylamine (BF3-MEA) accelerator and an anhydride curing agent (hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride). The thermal properties and crystalline structure of the amphiphilic graft copolymers CR-g-PEG600, CR-g-PEG2000, and CR-g-PEG6000 using chloroprene rubber (CR) as the hydrophobic backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights as the hydrophilic side chains were studied by DSC and WAXD. The results showed that a distinct phase-separated structure existed in CR-g-PEGs because of the incompatibility between the backbone segments and the side-chain segments. For all the polymers studied, T-m2, which is the melting point of PEG crystalline domains in CR-g-PEG, decreased compared to that of the corresponding pure PEG and varied little with PEG content. For CR-g-PEG600 and CR-g-PEG2000, T-m1, which is the melting point of the CR crystalline domains, increased with increasing PEG content when the PEG content was not high enough, and at constant PEG content, the longer were the PEG side chains the higher was the T-m1. The crystallite size L-011 of CR in CR-g-PEGs increased compared to that of the pure CR and decreased with increasing PEG content. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The gas transport of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane gases in a series of poly(aryl ether ketone)s was examined. These polymer membranes have a wide range of permeability coefficients and permselectivity coefficients, showing excellent gas-transport properties. The enhanced interchain interaction in the polymers due to intermolecular hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds results in a considerable increase in permselectivity but a decrease in permeability. On the contrary, the polymers with bulky arkyl substituents show significantly increased permeability. The causes of this trend are interpreted in terms of the free volume, interchain distance, and glass transition temperature together with the respective contribution of gas solubility and diffusivity to the overall permeability. Of interest is the observation that the ionomer IMPEK-K+, which simultaneously contains bulky isopropyl substituents and pendant carboxylate groups, exhibits over twice higher CO2 permeability and 15% higher CO2/CH4 permselectivity than those of bisphenol-A p'olysulfone (PSF). The possibility of using the new synthesized poly(aryl ether ketone)s in gas separation membrane application is also discussed. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The crystal structure, morphology and polymorphism induced by uniaxial drawing of poly(ether ether ketone ketone) [PEEKK] have been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). On the basis of WAXD and ED patterns, the crystal structure of unoriented PEEKK is determined to have two-chain orthorhombic packing with unit cell parameters of a 0.772 nm, b = 0.600 nm, c = 1.004 nm (form I), A stress-induced crystal modification (form II) is identified and found to possess a two-chain orthorhombic lattice with unit cell dimensions of a = 0.461 nm, b = 1.074 nm, c = 1.080 nm. The 7.5% increase in c-axis dimension for form II is attributed to an overextended chain conformation, arising from extensional deformation during uniaxial drawing and fixed ''in-situ'' through strain-induced crystallization. The average ether-ketone bridge bond angles in form II crystal are determined to be 148.9 degrees by using standard bond lengths. The crystal morphology of PEEKK bears a great similarity to that of PEEK. The crystals grow in the form of spherulites and have the b-axis of unit cell radial. The effects of draw rate on strain-induced crystallization and induction of form II structure are also discussed.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior and melting process of the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) diblock copolymer in which the weight fraction of the PCL block is 0.80 has been studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Only the PCL block is crystallizable, the PEO block with 0.20 weight fraction cannot crystallize. The kinetics of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed by Ozawa's equation. The experimental data shows no agreement with Ozawa's theoretical predictions in the whole crystallization process, especially in the later stage. A parameter, kinetic crystallinity, is used to characterize the crystallizability of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer. The amorphous and microphase separating PEO block has a great influence on the crystallization of the PCL block. It bonds chemically with the PCL block, reduces crystallization entropy, and provides nucleating sites for the PCL block crystallization. The existence of the PEO block leads to the occurrence of the two melting peaks of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer during melting process after nonisothermal crystallization. The comparison of nonisothermal crystallization of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer, PCL/PEO blend, and PCL and PEO homopolymers has been made. It showed a lower crystallinity of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer than that of others and a faster crystallization rate of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer than that of the PCL homopolymer, but a slower crystallization rate than that of the PCL/PEO blend.
