Surface morphology of polystyrene (PS) films on different substrates by spin-coating before and after annealing was observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effects of polymer molecular weight, substrates, solvents, and annealing conditions on the morphology of the films were investigated. Before annealing, the grain height decreases, and simultaneously the grain diameter increases with molecular weight (M-w) within the measured molecular weight. After annealing. the situation is opposite, i.e., the grain height increases while the grain diameter decreases with M-w. Furthermore, after annealing the smaller surface roughness (Ra) was obtained. It was also found that film surface roughness (Ra) depends on the vapor pressure and dipole moment of different used solvents as well as the substrates. The experimental results show that when the used solvents have similar dipole moment but different vapor pressure, the Ra of PS film decreased with the decreasing vapor pressure of solvents whether on silicon or on mica. And when the used solvents have close vapor pressure but different dipole moment, the Ra decreased with the increasing of solvent dipole moments on both substrates.

The effects of the molecular weight of polystyrene (PS) component on the phase separation of PS/poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS/P4VP) blend films on homogeneous alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and heterogeneous SAM/Au substrates have been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). For the PS (22.4k)/P4VP (60k) system, owing to the molecular weight of PS component is relatively small, the well-aligned PS and P4VP stripes with good thermal stability are directed by the patterned SAM/Au surfaces. With the increase of the molecular weight of PS component (for the PS (582k)/P4VP (60k) system), the diffusion of P4VP is hindered by the high viscosity of PS during the fast spin-coating process. The phase separation behavior of PS/P4VP on the SAM/Au patterned substrates is similar to that on the homoueneous SAM and cannot be easily directed by the patterned SAM surfaces even though the characteristic length of the lateral domain morphology is commensurate with the stripe width.

Ordered hexagonal droplets patterns in phase-separating polymeric blend films of polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS/PVP) formed due to the convection effect by solvent evaporation. The influences of PS molecular weight, solvent evaporation rate, and the weight ratio of PS to PVP on the PVP-rich domains pattern formation and distributions were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM). Only in an appropriate range of molecular weight of PS, can the ordered pattern form. Too low or too high molecular weight of PS led no ordered pattern due to the viscosity effects. The increase of solvent evaporation rate decreased the mean radius of the PVP-rich domains and the intervals between the centers of the domains due to the enhancement of the viscosity on the top layer of the fluid film. The increase of the weight ratio of PS to PVP decreased mean radius of the PVP-rich domains whereas the intervals between the centers of droplets remained constant. Therefore, the size and the distributions of ordered patterns can be tuned by the polymer molecular weight, the weight ratio of the two components and the solvent evaporation rate.

The surface morphology evolution of three thin polystyrene (PS)/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) blend films (<70 nm) on SiOx substrates upon annealing were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and some interesting phenomena were observed. All the spin-coated PS/PMMA blend films were not in thermodynamic equilibrium. For the 67.1 and the 27.2 nm PS/PMMA blend films, owing to the low mobility of the PMMA-rich phase layer at substrate surfaces and interfacial stabilization caused by long-range van der Waals forces of the substrates, the long-lived metastable surface morphologies (the foam-like and the bicontinuous morphologies) were first observed. For the two-dimensional ultrathin PS/PMMA blend film (16.3 nm), the discrete domains of the PS-rich phases upon the PMMA-rich phase layer formed and the secondary phase separation occurred after a longer annealing time.

Bottom-contact organic thin-film transistors (BC OTFTs) based on inorganic/organic double gate insulators were demonstrated. The double gate insulators consisted of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) with high dielectric constant (kappa) as the first gate insulator and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) with low kappa as the second gate insulator. The devices have carrier mobilities larger than 10(-2) cm(2)/V s, on/off current ratio greater than 10(5), and the threshold voltage of -14 V, which is threefold larger field-effect mobility and an order of magnitude larger on/off current ratio than the OTFTs with a Ta2O5 gate insulator. The leakage current was decreased from 2.4x10(-6) to 7.4x10(-8) A due to the introduction of the OTS second dielectric layer. The results demonstrated that using inorganic/organic double insulator as the gate dielectric layer is an effective method to fabricate OTFTs with improved electric characteristics.

Binary CNBR/PP-g-GMA and ternary CNBR/PP/PP-g-GMA thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by reactive blending carboxy nitrile rubber (CNBR) powder with nanometer dimension and polypropylene functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA). Morphology observation by using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and TEM revealed that the size of CNBR dispersed phase in CNBR/PP-g-GMA binary blends was much smaller than that of the corresponding CNBR/PP binary blends. Thermal behavior of CNBR/PP-g-GMA and CNBR/PP blends was studied by DSC. Comparing with the plain PP-g-GMA, T, of PP-g-GMA in CNBR/PP-g-GMA blends increased about 10degreesC. Both thermodynamic and kinetic effects would influence the crystallization behavior of PP-g-GMA in CNBR/PP-g-GMA blends. At a fixed content of CNBR, the apparent viscosity of the blending system increased with increasing the content of PP-g-GMA. FTIR spectrum verified that the improvement of miscibility of CNBR and PP-g-GMA was originated from the reaction between carboxy end groups of CNBR and epoxy groups of GMA grafted onto PP molecular chains. Comparing with CNBR/PP blends, the tensile strength, stress at 100% strain, and elongation at break of CNBR/PP-g-GMA blends were greatly improved.

A responsive polymer composite film was generated by the use of reversibly switchable Surface morphology of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) films in response to different block selective solvents on the rough isotactic poly(propylene) (i-PP) substrate. The Maximum difference of the water contact angle of the composite films increased from 22.6 degrees of PS-b-PMMA films on the smooth substrate to 42.6 degrees when they were treated by PS and PMMA selective solvents, respectively. The mechanisms of the responsive extent enhanced and the superhydrophobicity of the composite films were discussed in detail.

A new amperometric biosensor for hydrogen peroxide was developed based on cross-linking horseradish peroxidase (HRP) by glutaraldehyde with multiwall carbon nanotubes/chitosan (MWNTs/chitosan) composite film coated on a glassy carbon electrode. MWNTs were firstly dissolved in a chitosan solution. Then the morphology of MWNTs/chitosan composite film was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that MWNTs were well soluble in chitosan and robust films could be formed on the surface. HRP was cross-linked by glutaraldehyde with MWNTs/chitosan film to prepare a hydrogen peroxide biosensor. The enzyme electrode exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and rapid response for H2O2 in the absence of a mediator. The linear range of detection towards H2O2 (applied potential: -0.2 V) was from 1.67 x 10(-5) to 7.40 x 10(-4) M with correction coefficient of 0.998. The biosensor had good repeatability and stability for the determination of H2O2. There were no interferences from ascorbic acid, glucose, citrate acid and lactic acid.

The effects of solvent nature on the surface topographies of polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blend films spin-coated onto the silicon wafer were investigated. Four different solvents, such as ethylbenzene, toluene, tetrahydrofuran and dichloromethane, were chosen. They are better solvents for PS than that for PMMA. When dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran and toluene were used, PMMA-rich phase domains protruded from the background of PS. When ethylbenzene was used, PS-rich phase domains elevated on the average height of PMMA-rich phase domains. In addition, continuous pits, networks and isolated droplets consisted of PS formed on the blend film surfaces with the decrease of polymer concentrations. The mechanism of the surface morphology evolution was discussed in detail.

Polymer concentration and shear and stretch field effects on the surface morphology evolution of three different kinds of polymers (polystyrene (PS), polybutadiene (PB) and polystyrene-b-polybutadiene-b-polystyrene (SBS)) during the spin-coating were investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). For PS and SBS, continuous film, net-like structure and particle structure were observed at different concentrations. For PB, net-like structures were not observed and continuous films and radial array of droplets emerged. Moreover, we compared surface morphology transitions on different substrate locations from the center to the edge. For PS, net-like structure, broken net-like structure and irregular array of particles were observed. For SBS, net-like structure, periodically orientated string-like structure and broken-line structure appeared. But for PB, flower-like holes in the continuous film, distorted stream-like structure and irregular distributions of droplets emerged. These different transitions of surface morphologies were discussed in terms of individual material property.

The blends of low molecular weight triacetin (TAC) and oligomeric poly(1,3-butylene glycol adipate) (PBGA) were used as multiple plasticizers to lubricate poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in this study. The thermal and mechanical properties of plasticized polymers were investigated by means of dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to analyze the morphologies of the blends. Multiple plasticizers were effective in lowering the glass transition temperature (T-g) and the melting temperature (T-m) of PLA. Moreover, crystallinity of PLA increased with increasing the con-tent of multiple plasticizers. Tensile strength of the blends decreased following the increasing of the plasticizers, but increased in elongation at break. AFM topographic images showed that the multiple plasticizers dispersed between interfibrillar regions. Moreover, the fibrillar crystallite formed the quasicrosslinkings, which is another cause for the increase in elongation at break.

The self-assembly of poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) and poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) on the surfaces of amorphous carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been investigated, respectively. The morphology and structures of these self-assembled thin films were studied by using atomic force microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. In the case of weak van der Waals interactions between absorbed molecules and substrate, i.e., on amorphous carbon, the self-assembly process was driven by absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions. For PDBS with weak absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions, the thin film showed organization lacking any measurable preferred orientation on the surface of amorphous carbon. While for PDHS with rigid backbone and strong intermolecular interactions, flat-on lamellae with silicon backbones perpendicular to the surface of amorphous carbon were formed. However, in the case of strong van der Waals interactions between absorbed molecules and substrate, i.e., on HOPG, the self-assembly process was tailored by the balance of absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions and molecule-substrate interactions. Both PDHS and PDBS thin films grew into edge-on lamellae on the surface of HOPG, which aligned according to a Mold symmetry.

The modification of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) was accomplished by melt-grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on its molecular chains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis were used to characterize the formation of HIPS-g-GMA copolymers. The content of GMA in HIPS-g-GMA copolymer was determined by using the titration method. The effect of the concentrations of GMA and dicumyl peroxide on the degree of grafting was studied. A total of 1.9% of GMA can be grafted on HIPS. HIPS-g-GNU was used to prepare binary blends with poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PBT), and the evidence of reactions between the grafting copolymer and PBT in the blends was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, and its mechanical properties. The SEM result showed that the domain size in PBT/HIPS-g-GMA blends was reduced significantly compared with that in PBT/HIPS blends; moreover, the improved strength was measured in PBT/HIPS-g-GMA blends and results from good interfacial adhesion. The reaction between ester groups of PBT and epoxy groups of HIPS-g-GMA can depress crystallinity and the crystal perfection of PBT.

A nanoparticulate ferric oxide-copper tris(2,4-di-tert-amylphenoxy)-8-quinolinolylphthalocyanine hybrid ultrathin film was constructed from alternate layers by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The composition, morphology and structure of the film were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, visible spectroscopy and polarized UV-Vis spectroscopy. All the above analyses suggest that the thin film is a kind of one-dimensional superlattice, composed of organic and inorganic components. The XPS data reveal that the nanoparticulate ferric oxide exists as an alpha-Fe2O3 phase in the films. Gas-sensing measurements show that the hybrid LB film has very fast response-recovery characteristics towards 2 ppm C2H5OH vapor.
