RBa2Cu3O7 (R = Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Y, Ho, Er, Tm) has been studied using complex chemical bond theory. The results indicated that with the decreasing of R radius, the ionicities for all considered types of bond decrease. This is in good agreement with the experimental fact that T-c decreases with the decreasing of R radius. PrBa2Cu3O7 with no Ba-site Pr in this calculation is also predicted to be a superconductor. This supports the conclusion obtained by Blackstead et al. The ionicity for each bond obeys the following order: Ba-O > R-O > Cu(2)-O(1) > Cu(2)-O(2,3) > Cu(1)-O(4) similar to Cu(1)-O(1).

NdCl3 reacts with excess CpNa (Cp=Cyclopentadienyl) in THF, followed by sequent treatment with (S)-(+)-N-(1-phenylethyl)salicylideneamine led to the formation of title compound, [GRAPHICS] The X-ray structure determination shows that it is a dimer with internal C-C bond formation and hydrogen transfer between one of Cp ring and the C=N bond of Schiff base ligand. A novel and quantitative study on structure-property relationships has been carried out in urea crystal, based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the modified Levine bond charge model, mainly from the chemical bond viewpoint. For the first time, it was treated like this, and the bond parameters and linear and nonlinear characteristics of constituent chemical bonds were presented quantitatively. The theoretical result agrees satisfactorily with the experimental datum and can reasonably explain the nonlinear origin of urea crystal, that is, the C-N bond in the conjugated system of bonds O double left arrow C<--N-H. At the same time, the novel method should be a useful tool toward the future development of the search for new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the organic crystal field.

A theoretical method has been set up to calculate the electrooptic tensor coefficients r(ijk), based on the Phillips-Van Vechten (PV) dielectric theory and the Levine bond charge model, Starting from the crystal structure data and only introducing the experimentally determined optical permittivity and dielectric constant, the electro-optic tensor coefficients r(ijk) can be quantitatively predicted, The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with experiment in the case of zinc blende and wurtzite crystals, For zinc blende crystals, the effects of covalent radii on the linear electro-optic coefficients are discussed. A systematic and quantitative research on the structure-property correlation has been carried out in KH2PO4 (KDP), NH4H2PO4 (ADP) and HIO3, based on the dielectric theory of complex crystals and the Levine bond charge model. We, for the first time, successfully solve the problems in the calculation of the nonlinearities of the complex inorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, which have O-H bonds in their crystal structures. We do this by introducing the bond-valence equation we have set up, calculating the nonlinear optical tensor coefficients d(ijk) of these three compounds, quantitatively determining the contributions of each type of bond to the total second-order NLO tensor coefficient (d(ijk)) of the crystal, and presenting the bond parameters and the linear properties of each kind of bond. For the first time, the NLO coefficient d(36) for ADP was calculated. All calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data. We found that O-H bonds also play an important role in these crystals, except for in the important anionic groups (PO4 groups and IO3 groups). All the results thus calculated show that our method is useful in evaluating the NLO coefficients of the inorganic NLO crystals containing O-H bonds in their structures, and should be a useful tool toward the future research into new nonlinear optical materials of this kind.

Two new chiral liquid crystals of schiff-base type have been synthesized. This series of compounds contain a-chloro acidic ester chain prepared from commercially available L-valine. Both of the compounds exhibit tilted smectic phases; their phase transitions were studied using DSC and polarized optical microscopy; the influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds on the phase behavior was studied as well.

Two new hydrogen bond induced liquid crystals with 4-butoxy benzoic acid as the proton donor and two chiral substituted stilbazole as the proton acceptor have been synthesized. Their liquid crystal transitions were studied by DSC and optical polarized microscope, the IR spectra of the complexes show the existence of the intermolecular hydrogen bond. The results of DSC and optical polarized microscope show that one of them (4BA-VSZ) has a chiral smectic C phase.

The electrooxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) at the bis(4-pyridyl)disulfide (PySSPy) modified gold electrode was studied. The results showed that the oxidation process was pH-dependent. It was mainly due to the static interaction between AA and the modified

The reactions of [Cp2Mo2(CO)4] (1) with 2,2'-dipyridyl disulphide (C5H4NS-)2, 8,8'-diquinolyl disulphide (C9H6NS-)2 and tetramethyl thiuram disulphide (Me2NC(S)S-)2 in toluene solution resulted in the cleavage of the Mo-Mo triple bond to yield molybdenum complexes [CpMo(CO)2(C5H4NS)] (2), [CpMo(CO)2(C9H6NS)] (3) and [CpMo(CO)2(S2CNMe2)] (4), respectively. The molecular structures of 2, 3 . O=PPh3 and 4 were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. Crystals of 2 are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, with Z = 4, in a unit cell of dimensions a = 6.448(1), b = 12.616(2), c = 14.772(2) angstrom, beta = 92.85(1)-degrees. The structure was refined to R = 0.028 and R(w) = 0.039 for 1357 observed reflections. Crystals of 3 . O=PPh3 are triclinic, space group P1BAR, with Z = 2, in a unit cell of dimensions a = 11.351(3), b = 13.409(3), c = 9.895(2) angstrom, alpha = 94.59(2), beta = 90.35(2), gamma = 78.07(2)-degrees. The structure was refined to R = 0.033 and R(w) = 0.037 for 3260 observed reflections. Crystals of 4 are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a and Z = 4 with a = 12.468(5), b = 7.637(2), c = 13.135(4) angstrom, beta = 96.62(3). The structure was refined to R = 0.032 and R(w) = 0.042 for 1698 observed reflections. Each of complexes 2-4 contains a cyclopentadienyl ligand, a cis pair of carbonyls and a chelate ligand (S,N donor or S,S donor). All the compounds have distorted square-pyramid structures.

The frequencies of the stretching vibration and the bending vibration of the 0-H ... 0 bond in potassium dihydrogen phosphate have been calculated by means of two semiempirical formulae with three parameters. The calculated results can give satisfactory explanation for the experimental spectra of the potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal. The parameters used in the calculations may be related to the chemical bonding and the charge distribution about the two oxygen atoms of the 0-H ... 0 bond system.

The electrochemical behaviour of hexacyanoferrate(II) has been studied by using a bis(4-pyridyl)disulfide modified gold electrode. On the protonated electrode surface, hexacyanoferrate(II) can transfer an electron reversibly but no apparent adsorption was detected. On the deprotonated electrode surface, electron transfer by hexacyanoferrate(II) was more difficult. The electrochemical reversibility varied with the pH of the solution. Relationships between the currents or the standard heterogeneous rate constants and pH were derived.
