The TEM study of titanium-containing ZSM-5 zeolite before and after hydrothermal treatment was performed. The use of different TEM techniques, such as conventional TEM, HRTEM and EDX-line scans provides important information about the microscopic structure of the zeolite catalyst consisting from several phases. The hydrothermal treatment of zeolite powder leads to strong changes in the morphology of the constituting particles. They are characterized by a homogeneous structure before hydrothermal treatment while the occurrence of holes after thermal treatment was observed, These changes lead to the enrichment of zeolite with titanium which obviously enhance its catalytic activity. Some of the titanium surplus precipitates as TiO2 anatase nanoparticles within the holes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Catalytic cracking of butene over potassium modified ZSM-5 catalysts was carried out in a fixed-bed microreactor. By increasing the K loading on the ZSM-5, butene conversion and ethene selectivity decreased almost linearly, while propene selectivity increased first, then passed through a maximum (about 50% selectivity) with the addition of ca. 0.7-1.0% K, and then decreased slowly with further increasing of the K loading. The reaction conditions were 620 degrees C, WHSV 3.5 h(-1), 0.1 MPa 1-butene partial pressure and 1 h of time on stream. Both by potassium modification of the ZSM-5 zeolite and by N(2) addition in the butene feed could enhance the selectivity towards propene effectively, but the catalyst stability did not show any improvement. On the other hand, addition of water to the butene feed could not only increase the butene conversion, but also improve the stability of the 0.7%K/ZSM-5 catalyst due to the effective removal of the coke formed, as demonstrated by the TPO spectra. XRD results indicated that the ZSM-5 structure of the 0.07% K/ZSM-5 catalyst was not destroyed even under this serious condition of adding water at 620 degrees C.

The silver catalyzed, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by CH4, is shown to be a structure-sensitive reaction. Pretreatment has a great affect on the catalytic performances. Upon thermal treatment in inert gas stream, thermal induced changes in silver morphology lead to the formation of reduced silver species of clusters and particles. Catalysis over this catalyst indicates an initially higher activity but lower selectivity for the CH4-SCR of NOx Reaction induced restructuring of silver results in the formation of ill-defined silver oxides. This, in turn, impacts the adsorption properties and diffusivity of oxygen over silver catalyst, results in the decrease in activity but increase in selectivity of Ag-H-ZSM-5 catalyst for the CH4-SCR of NO.. In order to investigate the effect of acid properties on the coke behavior and stability of butene aromatization, we prepared the AHZSM-5 samples with various acid properties by the methods of hydrothernial treatment and K addition. The reaction of butene aromatization was carried out at 350 degrees C and 0.5 MPa in a continuous flow fixed bed. The characterization of the fresh/coked catalysts with NH3-TPD, N-2 adsorption-desorption measurement, and TG techniques has shown that a large amount of acid sites (high acid density) of the AHZMS-5 catalyst can cause a large quantity of coke deposit and serious channel blockage, and so result in a rapid loss of aromatization activity. On the contrary, after a great reduction in strong acid sites of AHZSM-5 catalyst resulting from some K-modification, the presence of only many weak acid sites also could not lessen the formation of coke nor improve the reaction stability of butene aromatization. Interestingly, the simultaneous reduction in the strong and weak acid sites to a desirable level by hydrothermal treating the AHZSM-5 catalyst at a proper temperature can effectively suppress the coke formation and channel blockage, and thus improve its olefin aromatization stability. The production of ethylbenzene from the alkylation of dilute ethylene in fee off-gases with benzene has been commercialized in China over a newly developed catalyst composed of ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystallized zeolite. The duration of an operation cycle of the commercial catalyst could be as long as 180 days. The conversion of ethylene could attain higher than 95%, while the amount of coke deposited on the catalyst was only about 10 wt.%. Thermogravimetry (TG) was used to study the coking behavior of the catalyst during the alkylation of fee off-gas with benzene to ethylbenzene. Based on effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, reactants and products on coking during the alkylation process, it is found that the coking rate during the alkylation procedure follows the order: ethylbenzene > ethylene > propylene > benzene for single component, and benzene-ethylene > benzene-propylene for bi-components under the same reaction condition. Furthermore, the coking kinetic equations for benzene-ethylene, benzene-propylene and ethylbenzene were established. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silver impregnated H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts with silver loading from 3 to 15 wt.% were investigated for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with CH4 in the excess of oxygen. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis measurements established the structure of silver catalysts. A relationship between the structure of silver catalysts and their catalytic functions for the SCR of NOx by CH4 was clarified. The NO conversion to N-2 showed a S-shape dependence on the increase of Ag loading. No linear dependence of catalytic activity on the amount of silver ions in the zeolite cation sites was observed. Contrastively, the activity was significantly enhanced by the nano-sized silver particles formed on the higher Ag loading samples (greater than or equal to7 wt.%). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) studies showed that nano-silver particles provided much stronger adsorption centers for active intermediates NO3-(s) on which adsorbed NO3-(s) could be effectively reduced by the activated methane. Silver ions in the zeolite cation sites might catalyze the reaction through activation of CH4 at lower temperatures. Activated CH4 reacted with NO3-(s) adsorbed on nano-silver particles to produce N-2 and CO2. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Isolated transition metal ions/oxides in molecular sieves and on surfaces are a class of active sites for selective oxidation of hydrocarbons. Identifying the active sites and their coordination structure is vital to understanding their essential role played in catalysis and designing and synthesizing more active and selective catalysts. The isolated transition metal ions in the framework of molecular sieves (e.g., TS-1, Fe-ZSM-5, and V-MCM-41) or on the surface of oxides (e.g., MoO3/Al2O3 and TiO2/SiO2) were successfully identified by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. The charge transfer transitions between the transition metal ions and the oxygen anions are excited by a UV laser and consequently the UV resonance Raman effect greatly enhances the Raman signals of the isolated transition metal ions. The local coordination of these ions in the rigid framework of molecular sieves or in the relatively flexible structure on the surface can also be differentiated by the shifts of the resonance Raman bands. The relative concentration of the isolated transition metal ion/oxides could be estimated by the intensity ratio of Raman bands. This study demonstrates that the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy is a general technique that can be widely applied to the in-situ characterization of catalyst synthesis and catalytic reactions. The behavior of different species during the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) of methane over various catalysts is traced by an online mass spectrometer, It is demonstrated that the transformation of MoO3 to molybdenum carbide hinders the activation of methane as well as the succeeding aromatization in the TPSR, If this transformation process is done before the reaction, the temperature needed for methane activation and benzene formation will be greatly lowered (760 and 847 K, respectively). On the basis of comparison of the catalytic behavior of molybdenum supported on different zeolites, it is suggested that the initial activation of methane is the rate-determining step of this reaction. For the cobalt catalysts supported on HMCM-22 or Mo catalysts supported on TiO2, no benzene formation could be observed during the TPSR, However, the prohibition of benzene formation is different in nature over these two catalysts: the former lacks the special properties exhibited by molybdenum carbide, which can continuously activate methane even when multiple layers of carbonaceous species are formed on its surface, while the latter cannot accomplish the aromatization reaction since there are no Bronsted acid sites to which the activated intermediates can migrate, although the activation of methane can be achieved on it. Only for the catalysts that possess both of these properties, together with the special channel structure of zeolite, can efficient methane aromatization be accomplished. (C) 2000 Academic Press.

The effects of both organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and Ni2O3 on the carbonization of polypropylene (PP) during pyrolysis were investigated. The results from TEM and Raman spectroscopy showed that the carbonized products of PP were mainly multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Surprisingly, a combination of OMMT and Ni2O3 led to high-yield formation of MWNTs. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and GC-MS were used to investigate the mechanism of this combination for the high-yield formation of MWNTs from PP. Bronsted acid sites were created in degraded OMMT layers by thermal decomposition of the modifiers. The resultant carbenium ions play an important role in the carbonization of PP and the formation of MWNTs. The degradation of PP was induced by the presence of carbenium ions to form predominantly products with lower carbon numbers that could be easily catalyzed by the nickel catalyst for the growth of MWNTs. Furthermore, carbenium ions are active intermediates that promote the growth of MWNTs from the degradation products with higher carbon numbers through hydride-transfer reactions. The XRD measurements showed that Ni2O3 was reduced into metallic nickel (Ni) in situ to afford the active sites for the growth of MWNTs.
