Solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of surface modified layers in plasma cladding technique are studied via numerical simulations. Both the coupling effect of temperature and solid volume fraction are considered in the proposed thermal analytical model, by which the transient temperature distributions are calculated and the shape of melting pool is determined. Furthermore, we perform microscopic thermal analysis on the nucleation and growth behaviors of ceramic hardening phases and dendrites, as well as the kinetics of related two-phase flow systems. By comparing with experimental observations, the evolution mechanisms of the morphology of Al2O3 ceramic hardening layer are explained. Based on the above results, a relationship among the scanning velocity of plasma stream, dendritic growth rate and the advancing speed of solid/liquid interface is found, and an energy criterion is proposed for predicting the pushing/engulfing transition of ceramic particles by grain growth fronts. inorganic-organic hybrid nanoparticles multilayer films were fabricated by extending the method of nucleation and growth of particles in polymer assemblies. The polyelectrolyte matrix was constructed by layer-by-layer self-assembly method. Synthesis of polyoxometalate nanoparticles was achieved by alternately dipping the precursor polyelectrolyte matrix into AgNO3 and H4SiW12O40 aqueous solutions. Repeating the above synthesis process, Ag4SiW12O40 nanoparticles with controllable diameters of 20 to 77 nm were synthesized in the multilayer films in-situ. UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the nanoparticles grew gradually in the synthesis process. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe the size and morphology of the nanoparticles.

Trigonal phase of tellurium (t-Te) nanorods with tapered ends have been synthesized through spontaneous oxidation of NaHTe by dissolved oxygen at room temperature. Utilization of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate was found to help to obtain high-quality nanorods. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction and Transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the possible nucleation and growth mechanism of the t-Te nanorods was discussed.

The nanocomposites of polyamide1010 (PA1010) filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared by melt mixing techniques. The isothermal melt-crystallization kinetics and nonisothermal crystallization behavior of CNTs/PA1010 nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The peak temperature, melting point, half-time of crystallization, enthalpy of crystallization, etc. were measured. Two stages of crystallization are observed, including primary crystallization and secondary crystallization. The isothermal crystallization was also described according to Avrami's approach. It has been shown that the addition of CNTs causes a remarkable increase in the overall crystallization rate of PA1010 and affects the mechanism of nucleation and growth of PA1010 crystals. The analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories shows that the increment in crystallization rate of CNTs/PA1010 composites results from the decrease in lateral surface free energy.

The thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) and their blends were prepared by means of spin-coating their corresponding solutions onto silicon wafers, followed by being annealed at different temperatures. The surface phase separations of PMMA/SAN blends were characterized by virtue of atomic force microscopy (AFM). By comparing the tapping mode AFM (TM-AFM) phase images of the pure components and their blends, surface phase separation mechanisms of the blends could be identified as the nucleation and growth mechanism or the spinodal decomposition mechanism. Therefore, the phase diagram of the PMMA/SAN system could be obtained by means of TM-AFM. Contact mode AFM was also used to study the surface morphologies of all the samples and the phase separations of the blends occurred by the spinodal decomposition mechanism could be ascertained. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to characterize the chemical compositions on the surfaces of the samples and the miscibility principle of the PMMA/SAN system was discussed.

The effect of nucleating agents on the crystallization behavior of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was studied. A differential scanning calorimeter was used to monitor the energy of the crystallization process from the melt and melting behavior. During the crystallization process from the melt, nucleating agent led to an increase in crystallization temperature (T-c) of PHBV compared with that for plain PHBV (without nucleating agent). The melting temperature of PHBV changed little with addition of nucleating agent. However, the areas of two melting peaks changed considerably with added nucleating agent. During isothermal crystallization, dependence of the relative degree of crystallization on time was described by the Avrami equation. The addition of nucleating agent caused an increase in the overall crystallization rate of PHBV, but did not influence the mechanism of nucleation and growth of the PHB crystals. The equilibrium melting temperature of PHBV was determined as 187degreesC. Analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories showed that the increase in crystallization rate of PHBV in the composite is due to the decrease in surface energy of the extremity surface.

Analysis of isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon 66 was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The commonly used Avrami equation and that modified by Jeziorny were used, respectively, to fit the primary stage of isothermal and nonisothermal crystallizations of nylon 66. In the isothermal crystallization process, mechanisms of spherulitic nucleation and growth were discussed. The lateral and folding surface free energies determined from the Lauritzen-Hoffman treatment are sigma = 9.77 erg/cm(2) and sigma (e) = 155.48 erg/cm(2), respectively; and the work of chain folding is q = 33.14 kJ/mol. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon 66 was analyzed by using the Mo method combined with the Avrami and Ozawa equations. The average Avrami exponent (n) over bar was determined to be 3.45. The activation energies (DeltaE) were determined to be -485.45 kJ/mol and -331.27 kJ/mol, respectively, for the isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization processes by the Arrhenius and the Kissinger methods.

Polyamide 1010/poly(propylene) (PA1010/PP) blends were investigated with and without the addition of poly(propylene)-graft-glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA). The effect of the compatibilizer on the thermal properties and crystallization behavior was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. From the results it is found that the crystallization of PA 1010 is significantly affected by the presence of PP-g-GMA. PP/PA 1010 (75/25) blends containing higher amounts of PP-g-GMA show concurrent crystallization at the crystallization temperature of PP. Isothermal crystallization kinetics also were performed in order to investigate the influence of the compatibilized process on the nucleation and growth mechanism. In the PP/PA 1010 (25/75) blends, concurrent crystallization behavior was not observed, even though the amount of PPg-GMA was high.

A study has been made of the crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP) filled with rare earth oxides under isothermal conditions. These rare earth oxides include lanthanum oxide (La2O3), yttrium oxide (Y2O3), and a mixture of rare earth oxides containing 70% Y2O3 (Y2O3-0.70). A differential scanning calorimeter was used to monitor the energetics of the crystallization process from the melt. During isothermal crystallization, dependence of the relative degree of crystallinity on time was described by the Avrami equation. It has been shown that the addition of any of the three rare earth oxides causes a considerable increase in the overall crystallization rate of PP but does not influence the mechanism of nucleation and growth of the PP crystals. The analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories shows that the increase in crystallization rate of PP in the composites is due to the decrease in surface energy of the extremity surfaces. The relative contents of the beta-form in the composites are somewhat higher than that in the plain PP. However, the contents of the beta-form in the plain PP and the composites are all very low relative to those of the alpha-form and the influence of the formation of the beta-form on the crystallization kinetics can be neglected.
