The synthesis Of SiO2 coated CeO2 nanoparticles by humid solid state reaction at room. temperature is described. Transmission electron microscope results show that CeO2 Particles were coated with a layer Of SiO2. Binding energy of Ce 3d(5/2) was shifted from 883.8 to 882.8 eV after coating in the XPS Ce 3d spectra. This confirms the chemical bond formation between SiO32- and Ce4+. Because the surface photovoltage property of CeO2 nanoparticles that were used as core materials in the experiment approaches to that of CeO2 macroparticles, peak P2 (electron transition from 0 2p on surface to Ce 4f) disappeared in the surface photovoltage spectrum of CeO2 nanoparticles. Also, the effect Of SiO2 on the electron transition from 0 2p to Ce 4f results in the lowering of surface photovoltage response intensity of P1 peak (electron transition from 0 2p in bulk to Ce 4f).

Luminescent thin films of heteropolytungstate complexes containing lanthanide (europium or samarium) were successfully fabricated by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The pressure-area isotherm of the monolayer of dimethyldioctadecylammonium. bromide (DODA) is modified rather markedly when the subphase contains the complex of Na9EuW10O36 or Na9SmW10O36. The above results indicate that the monolayer of DODA has a strong interaction with the polyanions of EuW10O369-. (or SmW10O369-). X-ray photoelectron spectra and fluorescent spectra verify that europium and tungsten atoms are 36 36 incorporated into the LB films. Ultraviolet (UV), fluorescent spectra and low-angle X-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate that these LB films have a well-defined lamellar structure. The LB film containing EuW10O369- can give off strong fluorescence 16 on UV irradiation. The characteristic emission behaviors of europium ions in LB films and in the powder of Na9EuW10O369- are discussed. It is found that the intensity ratio of the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transition to the D-5(0)-->F-7(1) transition in LB film is quite different from that in the powder of Na9EuW10O36. The difference of the ratio indicates that the site symmetry of europiurn is distorted in LB film, which is probably due to the strong electrostatic interactions between DODA and polyanions.

Nanostructure and morphology and their development of poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) and poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) during the crystal-mesophase transition are investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray diffraction and hot-stage atomic force microscopy. At room temperature, PDHS consists of stacks of lamellae separated by mesophase layers, which can be well accounted using an ideal two-phase model. During the crystal-mesophase transition, obvious morphological changes are observed due to the marked changes in main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. In contrast to PDHS, the lamellae in PDBS barely show anisotropy in dimensions at room temperature. The nonperiodic structure and rather small electronic density fluctuation in PDBS lead to the much weak SAXS. The nonperiodic structure is preserved during the crystal-mesophase transition because of the similarity of main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase.

A distorted layered perovskite compound BaTb2Mn2O7 was synthesized by the solid state reaction in pure argon. There is a structural phase transition in the BaTb2Mn2O7 compound. The phase transition was characterized by the DSC and high temperature Xray diffraction. The heat capacity of BaTb2Mn2O7 was calculated. The thermal anomaly corresponding to the phase transition was observed at about 740K. The lattice parameters were calculated by the CELL program for BaTb2Mn2O7, It has Tb-type orthorhombic symmetry with a = 0.3908 nm, b = 0.3866 nm, c = 2.0163 nm, and space group Immm at room temperature. With the increase of temperature, the lattice parameters gradually increase until 673K. From 723K to 973K, the compound translates to tetragonal with a = 0.39078 nm, c = 2.0277 nm and S.G. I4/mmm. This result is fairly in accordance with that of heat capacity.

Nylon 10 10 crystals, which isothermally crystallized from the molten state and cold crystallized from melt-quenched samples at various temperatures, were investigated by using temperature-variable wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). No Brill transition occurred for the melt-crystallized crystals. However, this transition was easily observed for the cold-crystallized nylon 10 10, and the transition temperature is pertinent to the crystallization temperature. The sizes of these crystals was determined by SAYS and correlated with the Brill transition temperatures (T-B). It was found that the T-B had a linear relationship with the size of crystals, which was used to predict the T-B for those crystals with thick lamella and to calculate the crystal size showing T-B below room temperature. Nylon 10 10 crystal will possess the gamma form (pseudohexagonal form) rather than the a phase at room temperature if its size becomes small enough.

The FeCl3-doped three poly(3-alkylthiophenes) (P3ATs) in solid state, i.e. poly( 3-octylthiophenl) (P3OT), poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3ODT) and poly( 3-octadecylthiophene) (P3ODT), were investigated in this paper. In X-ray diffraction results, there are obvious variations of the interlayer and interlayer spacings in the layered structures of P3ATs. In addition, it is found that some orientations of the side-chain groups occur after the doping process. The infrared spectra have also shown the microstructural changes arising from the readjustments of the polymer chains due to the intervention of the dopant. The presence of dopant leads to the formation of bipolarons and polarons at the same time. The conductivity measurements reveal that the conductivity decreases with the increase of the length of sidechain group. We have also observed the relaxation behaviors in the conductivities of the doped polymers. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a polyethersulfone (PES) chain are carried out in the amorphous state by using the Dreiding 2.21 force field at four temperatures. Two types of molecular motion, i.e, rotations of phenylene rings and torsions of large segments containing two oxygen atoms, two sulfur atoms, and five phenylene rings on the backbone, are simulated. The modeling results show that the successive phenylene rings should be in-phase cooperative rotations, whereas the successive large segments should be out-of-phase cooperative torsions. By calculating the diffusion coefficient for the phenylene ring rotations, it is found that this rotation contributes to the beta -transition of PES.

Energy transfer processes between Eu2+ and Gd3+, Cr3+, Ce3+ ions in KMgF3, which are difficult to study spectroscopically, have been investigated by using the proposed four-level decay model of the P-6(7/2) excited state of the Eu2+ ion. Gd3+ and Ce3+ transfer its energy to the vibronic transition of the P-6(7/2) --> S-8(7/2) transition of Eu2+, whereas Cr3+ receive energy from Eu2+ via the d-d interaction. The energy transfer from the Eu2+ 4f(6)5d level to the Ce3+ 4f5d state is observed spectroscopically, and the energy transfer mechanism is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Ultra high molar mass polyethylene (UHPE) powder as polymerized in a slurry process has been studied, in its nascent state, after recrystallization on rapid cooling from the melt and after hot compression molding to a film, by DSC, effect of annealing the recrystallized specimen at 120 similar to 130 degreesC, morphology by polarizing optical microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering. Based on the experimental results obtained the macromolecular condensed state of the nascent UHPE powder is a rare case of a multi-chain condensed state of non-interpenetrating chains, involving interlaced extended chain crystalline layers and relaxed parallel chain amorphous layers. On melting, a nematic rubbery state of nanometer size domain resulted. The nematic-isotropic transition temperature was judged from literature data to be at least 220 degreesC, possibly higher than 300 degreesC, the exact temperature is however not sue because of chain degradation at such high temperatures. The recrystallization process from the melt is a crystallization from a nematic rubbery state. The drop of remelting peak temperature by 10 K of the specimen recrystallized from its melt as compared to the nascent state has its origin in the decrease both of the crystalline chain stem length and of the degree of crystallinity. The remelting peak temperature could be returned close to that of the nascent state by annealing at 120 similar to 130 degreesC.

Hybrid materials incorporating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) via a sol-gel process were studied for a wide range of compositions of PEG by DSC and high resolution solid-state C-13- and Si-29-NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the microstructure of the hybrid materials and the crystallization behavior of PEG in hybrids strongly depend on the relative content of PEG. With an increasing content of PEG, the microstructure of hybrid materials changes a lot, from intimate mixing to macrophase separation. It is found that the glass transition temperatures (T-g) (around 373 K) of PEG homogeneously embedded in a silica network are much higher than that (about 223 K) of pure PEG and also much higher in melting temperatures T-m (around 323 K) than PEG crystallites in heterogeneous hybrids. Meanwhile, the lower the PEG content, the more perfect the silica network, and the higher the T-g of PEG embedded in hybrids. An extended-chain structure of PEG was supposed to be responsible for the unusually high T-g of PEG. Homogeneous PEG-TEOS hybrids on a molecular level can be obtained provided that the PEG. content in the hybrids is less than 30% by weight. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The aggregation slate of polyimide in solution and in the solid state were studied using the NMR and fluorescence techniques. The experiment results show that the decay of spin-spin relaxation of polyimides with concentration can be described as a single exponential, biexponential, triexponential, biexponential profile. Meanwhile, the intensities of fluorencence spectra increase rapidly with the concentration, and some peaks have a red-shift. Based upon these experiment results, it can be concluded that polyimide in solution is very flexible, and there are several critical concentrations at which polyimide has distinctly different aggregation states. The existence of intermolecular charge transfer interaction between polyimide chains has been proved, and the interaction has a profound effect on the glass transition temperature, T-g, and the dynamic mechanical modulus of polyimide. A new amorphous comblike polymer (CBP) based on methylvinyl ether/maleic anhydride altering copolymer backbone and on oligooxyethylene side chain was synthesized. The dynamic mechanical properties of CBP and its Li salt complexes were investigated by means of DDV-11-EA type viscoelastic spectrometry. Results showed that there were two glass transitions (alpha-transition and beta-transition) in the temperature range from -100 to 100 degrees C. The beta-transition was assigned to oligo-PEO side chains and the temperature of beta-transition increases with increasing Li salt content. The alpha-transition was assigned to the main chain of CBP. The temperature of the alpha-transition (T-alpha) is also dependent upon the Li-salt content, but not monotonic. The value of T-alpha lies between 30-45 degrees C in the Li salt concentration range studied, near room temperature. It was found that the CBP-Li salt complexes showed an unusual dependence of ionic conductivity on Li salt content. There are two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity vs. Li salt concentration, which has been ascribed to the movability of the CBP main chain at ambient temperature. The temperature dependence bf the ionic conductivity indicated that the Arrhenius relationship was not obeyed, and the plot of log sigma against 1/(T - T-0) showed the unusual dual VTF behavior when using side chain glass transition temperature (T-beta) as T-0.

Poly(aryl ether ketone ketone)s (PEKK) was a high-performance engineering plastics, By means of Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) methods, PEKK samples crystallized in solvent induction, from glass state and from melting state were studied, Crystal forms I and II for PEKK were found, The formation of crystal form II was dependent on thermal history and solvent induction, and this form II had melting point 10 degrees C or so lower than that of form I crystallized from glass state, All PEKK samples had low melting peaks which were relevant to the polarization of PEKK molecular chain, while they had nothing to do with thermal history, The heat of fusion for PEKK low melting peaks accounted for,percentage of 2 to 10 or so of the whole heat of fusion, And PEKK has its equilibrium melting point of 409 degrees C.

The change in the microphase separation transition (MST) temperature of a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer induced by the addition of polystyrene (PS) was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. It was found that the transition temperature was determined from the molecular weight (M(H)) Of the added PS in relation to that of the corresponding blocks (M(A)) in the copolymer. The MST temperature decreased with added PS if M(H)/M(A) < 1/4, while it increased with added PS when M(H)/M(A) > 1/4 Analysis of the theoretical expression based on the random phase approximation showed exactly the same tendency of change in the transition temperatures as that observed experimentally. The interaction parameter, chi(SB), obtained by nonlinear fitting of the scattering profiles of SBS/PS blends in the disordered state, was found to be a function of temperature and composition. Composition fluctuations were found to exist in SBS/PS blends, increasing with increasing addition of PS but diminishing with increasing molecular weight of the added PS.

A new equation of state for polymer solids is given by P = B0/4 98[(V0/V)7.14 - (V0/V)2.16 + T/T0] comparison of the equation of state with experimental data is made for six kinds of polymers at different temperatures and pressures. The results obtained shown that the equation is suitable to describe the compression behavior of solid polymers in the region without transition.
