The electrochemically polymerized azure A film electrode is reported. The resulting film on a platinum electrode surface was analyzed with electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The heterogeneous electron transfer processes of hemoglobin at the polymerized azure A film electrode have been investigated using in situ UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry. The formal potential (E-degrees') and electron transfer number (n) of hemoglobin were calculated as E = 0.088 V versus NHE (standard deviation +/- 0.5, N = 4) and n = 1.8 (standard deviation +/- 0.5, N = 4). Exhaustive reduction and oxidation electrolysis are achieved in 80 and 380 seconds, respectively, during a potential step between -0.3 and +0.3 V. A formal heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant (k(sh)) of 3.54(+/- 0.12) X 10(-6) cm/s and a transfer coefficient (alpha) of 0.28(+/- 0.01) were obtained by cyclic voltabsorptometry, which indicated that the poly-azure A film electrode is able to catalyze the direct reduction and oxidation of hemoglobin.

Thermal decomposition processes of the mixed complexes of nitrilotriacetates of Pr, Sm, Tb, Ho and Tm with 2-amino-3-hydroxypropionic acid have been investigated. The results indicate that serine may coordinate to the rare earth ion via its hydroxyl group, not by means of its carboxyl group. From the thermogravimetric and the derivative thermogravimetric curves it can be deduced that there may be six or seven steps in the thermal decomposition process of these mixed complexes, and that not all thermal decomposition processes in these mixed complexes are the same. Some possible thermal decomposition reactions have been proposed, and the differences between the thermal decomposition processes of these complexes are also discussed.

The electrochemically polymerized azure A film electrode was firstly reported in this paper. A quasi-reversible electrode processes of myoglobin with the formal heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(sh)) of 1.73 x 10(-4) cm.s-1 at the polymerized azure A modified electrode have been achieved using in-situ UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry. The adsorption of myoglobin on the polymerized azure A film electrode surface was confirmed by XPS. With simultaneously studying of cyclic voltammetry and in-situ cyclic voltabsorptometry, the attribution of the voltammetry responses of myoglobin at the film electrode has been studied. The mechanism for the heterogeneous electron transfer of myoglobin at the polymerized azure A film modified electrode has been proposed as well.

The dynamic process of the ionic valence changing from Eu~(2+) to Eu~(3+) in EuF_2 at high temperature has been investigated by ESCA, high,temperature X-ray diffraction, high temperature spectrum, high temperature magnetic Isusceptibility and Mssbauer spectrum. The population of Undaria pinnatifida in its ecologic niche sustains itself in high temperature summer in the form of vegetative gametophytes, the haploid stage in its heteromorphic life cycle. Gametogenesis initiates when seawater temperature drops below the threshold levels in autumn in the northern hemisphere. Given that the temperature may fall into the appropriate range for gametogenesis, the level of irradiance determines the final destiny of a gametophytic cell, either undergoing vegetative cell division or initiating gametogenesis. In elucidating how vegetatively propagated gametophytes cope with changes of irradiance in gametogenesis, we carried out a series of culture experiments and found that a direct exposure to irradiance as high as 270 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1) was lethal to dim-light (7-10 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)) adapted male and female gametophytes. This lethal effect was linearly corelated with the exposure time. However, dim-light adapted vegetative gametophytes were shown to be able tolerate as high as 420 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1) if the irradiance was steadily increased from dim light levels (7-10 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)) to 90, 180 and finally 420 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1), respectively, at a minimum of 1-3 h intervals. Percentage of female gametophytic cells that turned into oogonia and were eventually fertilized was significantly higher if cultured at higher but not lethal irradiances. Findings of this investigation help to understand the dynamic changes of population size of sporophytic plants under different light climates at different site-specific ecologic niches. It may help to establish specific technical details of manipulation of light during mass production of seedlings by use of vegetatively propagated gametophytes.

To study the relationship between sediment transportation and saltwater intrusion in the Changjiang (Yangtze) estuary, a three-dimensional numerical model for temperature, salinity, velocity field, and suspended sediment concentration was established based on the ECOMSED model. Using this model, sediment transportation in the flood season of 2005 was simulated for the Changjiang estuary. A comparison between simulated results and observation data for the tidal level, flow velocity and direction, salinity and suspended sediment concentration indicated that they were consistent in overall. Based on model verification, the simulation of saltwater intrusion and its effect on sediment in the Changjiang estuary was analyzed in detail. The saltwater intrusion in the estuary including the formation, evolution, and disappearance of saltwater wedge and the induced vertical circulation were reproduced, and the crucial impact of the wedge on cohesive and non-cohesive suspended sediment distribution and transportation were successfully simulated. The result shows that near the salinity front, the simulated concentrations of both cohesive and non-cohesive suspended sediment at the surface layer had a strong relationship with the simulated velocity, especially when considering a 1-hour lag. However, in the bottom layer, there was no obvious correlation between them, because the saltwater wedge and its inducing vertical circulation may have resuspended loose sediment on the bed, thus forming a high-concentration area near the bottom even if the velocity near the bottom was very low during the transition phase from flood to ebb.

Accumulation and distributions of aliphatic and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals were measured in tissues of the clam Ruditapes philippinarum collected from 5 sites in Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao, China. The concentrations of total aliphatic hydrocarbon and PAHs ranged from 570 to 2 574 ng/gdw (gram dry weight) and from 276 to 939 ng/gdw, in the most and least polluted sites, respectively. The bio-accumulation of hydrocarbons and PAHs in the clams appeared to be selective. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were predominantly represented by short chain (< nC(23)) n-alkanes, suggesting that petroleum hydrocarbons were likely the major contamination source. The selective uptake of 3 and 4 ring PAHs, such as naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene, by the clams was probably related to the physiological and bio-kinetic processes that were energetically favorable for uptake of compounds with fewer rings. Accumulation of the metals Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Hg, and As in the clam tissues also showed high variability, ranging from 0.043 to 87 A mu g/gdw. Among the 7 detected metals, Zn, Cd, Cu, and As had a particularly high potential of accumulation in R. philippinarum. In general, a positive correlation was found between the tissue concentrations and sediment concentrations of hydrocarbons and of some metals. Our study suggests that moderate contamination with polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and low to moderate contamination with metals, currently exists for clam R. philippinarum in Jiaozhou Bay, in comparison with other regional studies. A long-term monitoring program is certainly needed for assessment of the potential ecological influence and toxicity of these contaminants of R. philippinarum in Jiaozhou Bay.

The vertical fluxes and vertical transferring forms of 18 rare elements were studied for the first time in the coral reef ecosystem of Nansha Islands, South China Sea, by deploying sediment traps, The results showed that the vertical transferring flux of most of the measured rare elements in Yongshu lagoon were higher than that in Zhubi lagoon. The vertical transferring forms of rare elements were mainly in the carbonate form, but Ta, As, Th mainly in the ion-exchange form, Ag in iron-manganese oxide form and Sb in the organic matter + sulphide form. None of the 18 rare elements was transferred mainly in the form of detritus silicate to sea floor. This proved that rare elements originating from the earth's crust were redistributed in sinking particulates after they were brought into ocean. The relation between the fluxes and surface seawater temperature (STT) was also studied. The sensitivity of rare elements to SST was in order: Rb>V>As>Ti>U>Zn>Sb>Hf>Ag>Cs.

Since the acceptance of the electrochemical rusting mechanism, oxygen reduction has been considered the main cathodic process, while H+ reduction has been overlooked for the past four decades because oxygen can be readily renewed due to the thin layer Of Solution film formed during atmospheric corrosion. This study shows that measurable hydrogen call be detected at the surface opposite to the corroding side of the specimen during wet-dry cycles, and a clear correlation exists between the quantities of hydrogen permeated through iron sheet and weight loss. Results Suggest the intrinsic importance of H+ reduction that merits further investigation. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
