The thermal decomposition mechanism of maleated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was investigated by FTIR and H-1 NMR. The results of experiments showed that the random chain scission of maleated PHB obeyed the six-membered ring ester decomposition process. The thermal decomposition behavior of PHB and maleated PHB with different graft degree were studied by thermogravimetry (TGA) using various heating-up rates. The thermal stability of maleated PHB was evidently better than that of PHB. With increase in graft degree, the thermal decomposition temperature of maleated PHB gradually increased and then declined. Activation energy E. as a kinetic parameter of thermal decomposition was estimated by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger methods, respectively. It could be seen that approximately equal values of activation energy were obtained by both methods.

The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and maleated PHB with different graft degree were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Avrami analysis indicates that the introduction of maleic anhydride results in the decrease in the overall crystallization rate of PHB, but does not affect its nucleation mechanism and geometry of crystal growth. The activation energy of the overall crystallization process increases with the increase in graft degree. The phenomenon of multiple melting endotherms is observed, which results from melting and recrystallization during the DSC heating run.

Crystallization and melting behavior of short ethylene sequence of metallocene ethylene/alpha -olefin copolymer with high comonomer content have been studied by standard DSC and modulated-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (M-TDSC) technique. In addition to high temperature endotherm around 120 degreesC, a low temperature endotherm is observed at lower temperatures (40-80 degreesC), depending on time and temperature of isothermal crystallization. The peak position of the low temperature endotherm T-m(low) varies linearly with the logarithm of crystallization time and the slope, D, decreases with increasing crystallization temperature T-c. The T-m(low) also depends on the thermal history before the crystallization at T-c, and an extrapolation of T-m(low) (30.6 degreesC) to a few seconds has been obtained after two step isothermal crystallization before the crystallization at 30 degreesC. The T-m(low) is nearly equal to T-c, and it indicates that the initial crystallization at low temperature is nearly reversible. Direct evidence of conformational. entropy change of secondary crystallization has been obtained by using M-TDSC technique. Both the M-TDSC result and the activation energy analysis of temperature dependence suggest that crystal perfection process and conformational entropy decreasing in residual amorphous co-exist during secondary crystallization.

The method of the kinetics separation of copper and palladium by sodium hydroxide precipitation was described. The reaction orders, apparent rate constants, apparent activation energy of the reactions between sodium hydroxide and copper, and palladium were determined, and the introduced error for the determination of palladium with separating copper and-palladium by sodium hydroxide precipitation was calculated, The proposed method has been applied to determine palladium in the aldehyde catalyst with good result.

Nonisothermal melt and cold crystallization kinetics of poly(aryl ether ketone ether ketone ketone) (PEKEKK) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny could only describe the primary stage of nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PEKEKK. Also, the Ozawa equation could not describe its nonisothermal crystallization behavior. A convenient and reasonable kinetic approach was used to describe the nonisothermal crystallization behavior. The crystallization activation energy were estimated to be -264 and 370 KJ/mol for nonisothermal melt and cold crystallization by the Kissinger method. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) and poly(3-octadecylthiophene) (P3ODT) are chosen to investigate the nonisothermal crystallization behavior by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). When Jeziorny method is applied, the deviation from the line appears at the later stage of crystallization for both P3DDT and P3ODT. The Ozawa equation fails to describe the nonisothermal crystallization of P3DDT, but succeeds for P3ODT. However, a new method proposed by our laboratory has been proven to be convenient and applicable for both of the two polymers. The values of the crystallization activation energy of P3DDT and P3ODT are estimated as 184.79 and 246.93 kJ/mol, respectively, in light of the Kissinger method. The partial oxidation of methane with molecular oxygen was performed on Fe-Mo/SiO2 catalysts. Iron was loaded on the Mo/SiO2 catalyst by chemical vapor deposition of Fe-3(CO)(12). The catalyst showed good low-temperature activities at 723-823 K. Formaldehyde was a major condensable liquid product on the prepared catalyst. There were synergistic effects between iron and molybdenum in Fe-Mo/SiO2 catalysts for the production of formaldehyde from the methane partial oxidation. The activation energy of Mo/SiO2 decreased with the addition of iron and approached that of the Fe/SiO2. The concentration of isolated molybdenum species (the peak at 1148 K in TPR experiments) decreased as the ion concentration increased and had a linear relationship with the selectivity of methane to formaldehyde. The role of Fe and Mo in the Fe-Mo/SiO2 catalyst was proposed: Fe is the center for the C-H activation to generate reaction intermediates, and Mo is the one for the transformation of intermediates into formaldehyde. Those phenomena were predominant below 775 K.

A series of solid electrolytes Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2(x=0 similar to0.6) was prepared by sol-gel method. The structure, thermal expansion coefficient and electrical properties of the solid solutions were systematically studied. XRD data showed that a complete cubic fluorite structure was formed at 160 degreesC. The purity of the product prepared by the sol-gel method is higher, the grain size is uniformly smaller. They were easily sintered into highly dense ceramic pellets at 1 300 degreesC. The sintering temperature was significantly lower than that by traditionally high temperature solid phase reaction method. The thermal expansion coefficient of Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9, determined from high- temperature XRD data, is 8. 125 X 10(-6) K-1. Impedance spectra analyses showed that the grain-boundary resistance of the solid electrolyte prepared by sol-gel method was reduced or even eliminated. The conductivity of Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 is 5.26 X 10(-3) S/cm at 600 degreesC. The activation energy (E-a) is 0.82 eV.

According to the data obtained from Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC),the method of Jeziorny, BOPOXOBCKHH and a new approach proposed by our laboratry are applied to study the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of poly( 3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) and poly(3-octadecylthiophene) (P3ODT),and Kissinger method is used to get the value of the crystallization activation energy. The effect of the different alkyl substitution on crystallization is also investigated. In comparison to the methods of Jeziorny and BOPOXOBCKHH in which it can be found that the deviation from the line occurs in the later stage of crystallization, the new approach appears applicable due to the better linear relation. The values of the crystallization activation energy of P3DDT and P3ODT are estimated as 184.78kJ/mol and 246.93kJ/mol, respectivley, which implies that it is easiser to crystallize P3DDT than P3ODT.

Physical aging of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been investigated. Heat flow responses were measured after annealing the amorphous samples obtained by quenching the melt into an ice-water bath close to, but below, the glass transition temperature. The extent of aging is related to the supercooling from the glass transition temperature and to the aging time. The activation energy of the aging process, which was estimated by a Williams-Watt expression, is similar in magnitude to that obtained for the cold crystallization for the aged samples. The quenched glass is a metastable glass. The conformation of molecular chains rearranges with physical aging which results in the formation of a denser packing in the amorphous phase. The dense amorphous phase may form an initial nucleus for crystallization. Isothermal cold crystallization of the aged samples was carried out. The Avrami equation was used to determine the kinetic parameters, and the Avrami constant n is about 2. An Arrhenius expression was used to evaluate the activation energy of relaxation upon physical aging and the activation energy of transportation upon isothermal crystallization. The activation energy of relaxation is similar in magnitude to that of crystallization for aged samples. Results obtained are interpreted as kinetic effects associated with the glass formation process.

The crystallization behavior of poly (3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) is studied bq differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under different cooling rates. When the methods of Jeziorny., Ozawa and a new one proposed by our laboratory are applied to describe its nonisothermal crystallization behavior, the new one is confirmed to be the best and convenient. By determining kinetic parameters, the analysis of the nonisothermal crystallization behavior is performed. According to Kissinger method, the crystallization activation energy of P3DDT is also evaluated.

The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The Avrami analysis indicates that the addition of PVAc into PHB results in the decrease in the overall crystallization rate of the PHB phase, but does not affect PHB's nucleation mechanism and geometry of crystal growth. The activation energy of the overall process of crystallization increases with the increasing PVAc content in the blends. The phenomenon of multiple melting endotherms is observed, which is caused by melting and recrystallization during the DSC heating run. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Physical aging of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) was investigated. Heat flow responses were measured after annealing the amorphous samples that were obtained by quenching the melt into an ice-water bath at just below the glass transition temperature. Isothermal cold crystallization of the aged samples was carried out. The Avrami equation was used to determine the kinetic parameters, and the Avrami constant it is about 2. An Arrhenius form was used to evaluate the relaxation activation energy of physical aging and the transport activation energy of isothermal crystallization. Nonisothermal melt crystallization kinetics of PEDEKmK linked by meta-phenyl and biphenyl was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A convenient and reasonable kinetic approach was used to describe the nonisothermal melt crystallization behavior, and its applicability was verified when the modified Avrami analysis by the Jeziorny and Ozawa equation were applied to the crystallization process. The crystallization activation energy was estimated to be -219 kJ/mol by Kissinger method while crystallizing from the PEDEKmK melt nonisothermally. These observed crystallization characteristics were compared to those of the other members of poly(aryl ether ketone) family. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The rheological properties of the novel engineering thermoplastic phenophthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) have been investigated using both a rotational and a capillary rheometer. The dependence of the viscosity on the shear rate and temperature was obtained. The activation energy was evaluated both from the Arrhenius and the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation. An estimate for the proper E(eta) (dependent only on the chemical structure of the polymer) has been found from the WLF equation at temperatures about T-g + 200 degrees C. Measurements of the die swell have been performed. The first normal stress differences were evaluated from the die swell results and compared with the values obtained from the rotational rheometer at low shear rates.
