Transparent Ni2+-doped beta-Ga2O3 glass-ceramics were synthesized. The nanocrystal phase in the glass-ceramics was identified to be beta-Ga2O3 and its size was about 3.6 nm. It was confirmed from the absorption spectra that the ligand environment of Ni2+ ions changed from the trigonal bi-pyramid fivefold sites in the as-cast glass to the octahedral sites in the glass-ceramics. The broadband infrared emission centering at 1270 nm with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of more than 250 nm was observed. The fluorescence lifetime was about 1.1 mu s at room temperature. The observed infrared emission could be attributed to the T-3 (2g) (F-3) -> (3)A (2g) (F-3) transition of octahedral Ni2+ ions. It is suggested that the Ni2+-doped transparent beta-Ga2O3 glass-ceramics with broad bandwidth and long lifetime have a potential as a broadband amplification medium.

We report a method for the selective introduction of fluorescent Ag nanoclusters in glass. Extinction and photoluminescence spectra show that a fraction of the Ag atoms are generated through femtosecond laser induced multiphoton reduction and then aggregate to form Ag nanoclusters after heat treatment. Red luminescence from the irradiated region is observed under blue or green laser excitation. The fluorescence can be attributed to interband transitions within Ag nanoclusters. This method provides a novel route to fabricate fluorescent nanomaterials in 3D transparent materials. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of alcohol solution on single human red blood Cells (RBCs) was investigated using near-infrared laser tweezers Raman spectroscopy (LTRS). In our system, a low-power diode laser at 785 nm was applied for the trapping of a living cell and the excitation of its Raman spectrum. Such a design could simultaneously reduce the photo-damage to the cell and suppress the interference from the fluorescence on the Raman signal. The denaturation process of single RBCs in 20% alcohol solution was investigated by detecting the time evolution of the Raman spectra at the single-cell level. The vitality of RBCs was characterized by the Raman band at 752 cm(-1), which corresponds to the porphyrin breathing mode. We found that the intensity of this band decreased by 34.1% over a period of 25 min after the administration of alcohol. In a further study of the dependence of denaturation on alcohol concentration, we discovered that the decrease in the intensity of the 752 cm(-1) band became more rapid and more prominent as the alcohol concentration increased. The present LTRS technique may have several potential applications in cell biology and medicine, including probing dynamic cellular processes at the single cell level and diagnosing cell disorders in real time. A novel metallized azo dye has been synthesized. The absorption spectra of the thin film and thermal characteristic are measured. Static optical recording properties with and without the Bi mask layer super-resolution near-field structure (Super-RENS) of the metal-azo dye are investigated. The results show that the metal-azo dye film has a broad absorbance band in the region of 450-650 nm and the maximum absorbance wavelength is located at 603 nm. It is also found that the new metallized azo dye occupies excellent thermal stability, initiatory decomposition temperature is at 270 degrees C and the mass loss is about 48% in a narrow temperature region (15 degrees C). The complex refractive index N (N = n + ik) is measured. High refractive index (n = 2.45) and low extinction coefficient (k = 0.2) at the recording wavelength 650nm are attained. Static optical recording tests with and without Super-RENS are carried out using a 650nm semiconductor diode laser with recording power of 7mW and laser pulse duration of 200ns. The AFM images show that the diameter of recording mark on the dye film with the Bi mask layer is reduced about 42%, compared to that of recorded mark on the dye film without Super-RENS. It is indicated that Bi can well performed as a mask layer of the dye recording layer and the metallized azo dye can be a promising candidate for recording media with the super-resolution near-field structure.

We investigate the broadband infrared emission of bismuth doped and bismuth/dysprosium codoped chalcohalide glasses. It is found that the bismuth/dysprosium codoping can drastically enhance the fluorescence as compared with either bismuth or dysprosium doped glasses. Meanwhile, the full width at half maximum of bismuth/dysprosium codoped glasses is over 170 nm, which is the largest value among all the reported rare-earth doped chalcohalide glasses. An ideal way for energy consumption between bismuth and dysprosium ions is supposed. Such improved gain spectra of both bismuth and dysprosium ions may have potential applications in developing broadband fibre amplifiers.

The local structure of Na-Al-P-O-F glasses, prepared by a novel sol-gel route, was extensively investigated by advanced solid-state NMR techniques. Al-21{F-19} rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) results indicate that the F incorporated into aluminophosphate glass is preferentially bonded to octahedral Al units and results in a significant increase in the concentration of six-coordinated aluminum. The extent of Al-F and Al-O-P connectivities are quantified consistently by analyzing Al-27{P-31} and Al-21{F-19} REDOR NMR data. Two distinct types of fluorine species were identified and characterized by various F-19{Al-27}, F-19{Na-23}, and F-19{P-31} double resonance experiments, which were able to support peak assignments to bridging (Al-F-Al, -140 ppm) and terminal (Al-F, -170 ppm) units. On the basis of the detailed quantitative dipole-dipole coupling information obtained, a comprehensive structural model for these glasses is presented, detailing the structural speciation as a function of composition.

Transparent glass ceramics have been obtained by nucleation and growth of Y2Te6O15 or Er2Te5O13 cubic phase in a new Er3+-doped oxyfluoride tellurite glass. Effect of beat treatment on absorption spectra, luminescence and up-conversion properties in the oxyfluoride tellurite glass has been investigated. With heat treatment the ultraviolet absorption edge red shifted evidently for the oxyfluoride telluride glass. The near infrared emission that corresponds to Er3+:I-4(13/2)-> I-4(15/2) can be significantly enhanced after heat treatment. Under 980 nm LD pumping, red and green up-conversion intensity of Er3+ in the glass ceramic can be observed much stronger than that in the base glass. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The near-IR emission spectra of Er3+-Tm3+ codoped 70GeS(2)-20In(2)S(3)-10CsI chalcohalide glasses were studied with an 808 nm laser as an excitation source. A broad emission extending from 1.35 to 1.7 mu m with a FWHM of similar to 160 nm was recorded in a 0.1 mol.% Er2S3, 0.5 mol.% Tm2S3 codoped chalcohalide glass. The fluorescence decay curves of glasses were measured by monitoring the emissions of Tm3+ at 1460 nm and Er3+ at 1540 nm, and the lifetimes were obtained from the first-order exponential fit. The luminescence mechanism and the possible energy-transfer processes are discussed with respect to the energy-level diagram of Er3+ and Tm3+ ions. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Transparent Li2O-Ga2O3-SiO2 glass ceramics containing Cr3+/Ni2+ codoped LiGa5O8 nanocrystals were synthesized. The steady state emission spectra indicated that the near-infrared emission intensity of Ni2+ at 1300 nm in Cr3+/Ni2+ codoped glass ceramics was enhanced up to about 7.3 times compared with that in Ni2+ single-doped glass ceramics with 532 nm excitation. This enhancement in emission intensity was due to efficient energy transfer from Cr3+ to Ni2+, which was confirmed by time-resolved emission spectra. The energy transfer efficiency was estimated to be 85% and the energy transfer mechanism was discussed. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Infrared (1.2-1.6 mum) luminescence in a yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) crystal, co-doped with Yb (10 at.%) and Cr (0.05 at.%) ions, was investigated under CW laser diode pumping (lambda = 940 nm). The Cr4+ emission band was observed with its peak at 1.35 mum and measured to be about 6% with respect to Yb3+ IR luminescence (lambda = 1.03 mum). Analysis of the crystal absorption and luminescence spectra allows one to conclude that Yb3+-Cr4+ energy transfer is a mechanism responsible for the B-3(2)(T-3(2))-B-3(1)((3)A(2)) emission of Cr4+ ions. This crystal is promising as an efficient source of the near infrared emission. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Visible upconversion luminescence was observed in Cr3+: Al2O3 crystal under focused femtosecond laser irradiation. The luminescence spectra show that the upconversion luminescence originates from the E-2-(4)A(2) transition of Cr3+. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity of Cr3+ on the pump power reveals that a two-photon absorption process dominates in the conversion of infrared radiation to the visible emission. It is suggested that the simultaneous absorption of two infrared photons produces the population of upper excited states, which leads to the characteristic visible emission from E-2 state of Cr3+.

Absorption spectrum from 400 to 2000 run and upconversion fluorescence spectra under 940 nm pumping of YAG single crystal codoped with 5 at.% Yb3+ and 4 at.% Tm3+ were studied at room temperature. The blue upconversion emission centered at 483 nm corresponds to the transition (1)G(4) -> H-3(6), the emission band around 646 nm corresponds to the transition (1)G(4) -> F-3(4) of Tm3+. Energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+ is mainly nonradiative and the transfer efficiency was experimentally assessed. The line strengths, transition probabilities and radiative lifetimes of (1)G(4) level were calculated by using Judd-Ofelt theory. Gain coefficient calculated from spectra shows that the upconversion corresponding with transitions (1)G(4) -> H-3(6) in YAG doped with Yb3+ and Tm3+ is potentially useful for blue light Output. Silicon nitride films were deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapour deposition. The films were then implanted with erbium ions to a concentration of 8 x 10(20) cm(-3). After high temperature annealing, strong visible and infrared photoluminescence (PL) was observed. The visible PL consists mainly of two peaks located at 660 and 750 nm, which are considered to originate from silicon nanocluster (Si-NCs) and Si-NC/SiNx interface states. Raman spectra and HRTEM measurements have been performed to confirm the existence of Si-NCs. The implanted erbium ions are possibly activated by an energy transfer process, leading to a strong 1.54 mu m PL.

Strongly vertically coupled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) with modulation doping are investigated, and polarization dependence of two-color absorptions was observed. Analysis of photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectra shows that s-polarized absorptions at. 10.0 and 13.4 mu m, stem from the first excited state E-1 and the second excited state E-2 in the QDs to the bound state E-InGaAs in the InGaAs spacer, respectively, whereas p-polarized absorptions at 10.0 and 8.2 mu m stem from the first excited state E-1 and the ground E-g in the QDs to the bound state E-InGaAs in the InGaAs spacer, respectively. These measurements illustrate that transitions from excited states are more sensitive to normal incidence, which are very important in designing QD infrared detector. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The first report of a short wavelength infrared detector based on type II InAs/GaSb superlattices is presented. Very short period superlattices containing InAs (2ML)/GaSb (8ML) superlattices (SLs) were grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaSb substrates. The photoluminescence showed a cut-off wavelength at 2.1 mu m at 10 K and 2.6 mu m at 300 K. Room-temperature optical transmittance spectra shows obvious absorption in InAs (2ML)/GaSb (8ML) SL in the range of 450-680 meV, i.e. 1.8-2.7 mu m. The cut-off wavelength moved from 2.3 mu m to 2.6 mu m with temperature rising from 77 K to 300 K in photoresponse spectra. The blackbody response R-v exponentially decreased as a function of 1/T in two temperature sections (130-200 K and 230-300 K). The blackbody detectivity D-bb(center dot) was beyond 1 x 10(8) cmHz(1/2)/W at room temperature. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
