A Cu-Zn-Al methanol catalyst combined with HZSM-5 was used for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from a syngas containing nitrogen, which was produced by air-partial oxidation of methane (air-POM). Air-POM occurred at 850 degreesC, 0.8 MPa, CH4/air/H2O/CO2 ratio of 1/2.4/0.8/0.4 over a Ni-based catalyst modified by magnesia and lanthanum oxide with 96% CH4 conversion and constantly gave syngas with a H-2/CO ratio of 2/1 during a period of 450 h. The obtained N-2-containing syngas was used directly for DME synthesis. About 90% CO per-pass conversion, 78% DME selectivity and 70% DME yield could be achieved during 450 h stability testing under the pressure of 5.0 MPa. the temperature of 240 degreesC and the space velocity of 1000 h(-1). A mixed-conducting perovskite-type Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) ceramic membrane reactor with high oxygen permeability was applied for the activation of methane. The membrane reactor has intrinsic catalytic activities for methane conversion to ethane and ethylene. C-2 selectivity up to 40-70% was achieved, albeit that conversion rate were low, typically 0.5-3.5% at 800-900 degreesC with a 50% helium diluted methane inlet stream at a flow rate of 34 ml/min. Large amount of unreacted molecular oxygen was detected in the eluted gas and the oxygen permeation flux improved only slightly compared with that under non-reactive air/He experiments. The partial oxidation of methane to syngas in a BSCFO membrane reactor was also performed by packing LiLaNiO/gamma -Al2O3 with 10% Ni loading as the catalyst. At the initial stage, oxygen permeation flux, methane conversion and CO selectivity were closely related with the state of the catalyst. Less than 21 h was needed for the oxygen permeation flux to reach its steady state. 98.5% CH4 conversion, 93.0% CO selectivity and 10.45 ml/cm(2) min oxygen permeation flux were achieved under steady state at 850 degreesC. Methane conversion and oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing temperature, No fracture of the membrane reactor was observed during syngas production. However, H-2-TPR investigation demonstrated that the BSCFO was unstable under reducing atmosphere, yet the material was found to have excellent phase reversibility. A membrane reactor made from BSCFO was successfully operated for the POM reaction at 875 degreesC for more than 500h without failure, with a stable oxygen permeation flux of about 11.5 ml/cm(2) min. Fuel cells are recognized as the most promising new power generation technology, but hydrogen supply is still a problem. In our previous work, we have developed a LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, which is excellent not only for partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, but also for steam reforming and autothermal reforming. However, the reaction needs pure oxygen or air as oxidant. We have developed a dense oxygen permeable membrane Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 which has an oxygen permeation flux around 11.5 ml/cm(2) min at reaction conditions. Therefore, this work is to combine the oxygen permeable membrane with the catalyst LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 in a membrane reactor for hydrogen production by mixed reforming of heptane. Under optimized reaction conditions, a heptane conversion of 100%, a CO selectivity of 91-93% and a H-2 selectivity of 95-97% have been achieved. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ce1-XNiXO2 oxides with X varying from 0.05 to 0.5 were prepared by different methods and characterized by XRD and TPR techniques. Ce(0.7)Mi(0.3)O(2) sample prepared by sol-gel method shows the highest reducibility and the highest catalytic activity for methane combustion. Three kinds of Ni phases co-exist in the Ce1-XNiXO2 catalysts prepared by sol-gel method: (i) aggregated NiO on the support CeO2, (ii) highly dispersed NiO with strong interaction with CeO2 and (iii) Ni atoms incorporated into CeO2 lattice. The distribution of different Ni species strongly depends on the preparation methods. The highly dispersed NiO shows the highest activity for methane combustion. The NiO aggregated on the support CeO2 shows lower catalytic activity for methane combustion, while the least catalytic activity is found for the Ni species incorporated into CeO2. Any oxygen vacancy formed in CeO2 lattice due to the incorporating of Ni atoms adsorbs and activates the molecular oxygen to form active oxygen species. So the highest catalytic activity for methane combustion on Ce0.7Ni0.3O2 catalyst is attributed not only to the highly dispersed Ni species but also to the more active oxygen species formed. Performance of palladium-containing supported catalysts in the oxidation of 1-butene was investigated in a fixed-bed flow microreactor. The Pd-Fe-HCl/Ti-Al catalyst is the best among the five Pd-Fe-HCl/X (A = SiO2, gamma-Al2O3, Al-Ti, TiO2, MCM-22) catalysts for the oxidation of I-butene to butanone. It is interesting that high propionic acid selectivity can be obtained when V and H2SO4 are added to the palladium-containing supported catalysts.

SbOx and SbOx/SiO2 catalysts were prepared and investigated for methane selective oxidation to HCHO. HCHO selectivity up to 41% can be obtained on Sb2O5/SiO2 catalyst at 873 K and just drop gently to 18% with temperature up to 923 K. HCHO selectivity for SbOx/SiO2 catalysts decreases gently with reaction temperature, so considerable value of HCHO selectivity can still be obtained at high temperatures.

The paper studies the direct oxidation of ethanol and CO on PdO/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 and Ce(0.75)Zr(0.2)5O(2) catalysts. Characterization of catalysts is carried out by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) techniques to correlate with catalytic properties and the effect of supports on PdO. The simple Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 is in less active for ethanol and CO oxidation. After loaded with PdO, the catalytic activity enhances effectively. Combined the ethanol and CO oxidation activity with CO-TPD and ethanol-TPSR profiles, we can find the more intensive of CO2 desorption peaks, the higher it is for the oxidation of CO and ethanol. Conversion versus yield plot shows the acetaldehyde is the primary product, the secondary products are acetic acid, ethyl acetate and ethylene, and the final product is CO2. A simplified reaction scheme (not surface mechanism) is suggested that ethanol is first oxidized to form intermediate of acetaldehyde, then acetic acid, ethyl acetate and ethylene formed going with the formation of acetaldehyde, acetic acid, ethyl acetate; finally these byproducts are further oxidized to produce CO2. PdO/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 catalyst has much higher catalytic activity not only for the oxidation of ethanol but also for CO oxidation. Thus the CO poison effect on PdO/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 catalysts can be decreased and they have the feasibility for application in direct alcohol fuel cell (DAFC) with high efficiency.
